Editor's Note [Positives]
  • Excellent design - an evolution of the design pioneered on the Mega 2.5D, the Coolpad Note 5 looks and feels like a positively premium device
  • Ergonomically too, the phone is well designed and despite the larger dimensions of a phone with a 5.5 inch display, it manages to fit well in the hand
  • Fast, accurate fingerprint reader
  • Very good display - with accurate colors, wide viewing angles, and great outdoor visibility
  • Cool UI is a highly customized Android skin with lots of features to add to the Android experience - including the Dual Apps feature (allows you to maintain multiple Facebook & WhatsApp accounts), the floating C button to provide quick access to often used actions on the large display, as well as a multitude of screen based gestures
  • The software in general is well optimized and tends to run smoothly
  • On the whole the performance on the device is good in regular use, and the multitasking experience is good too
  • With it’s 4010mAh battery, the phone performs extremely well in terms of battery life, with close to 2 days of battery life with average usage
  • Good build quality
  • Nice metal unibody design and brushed metal finish - feels good to hold
  • Smaller and slimmer than the K4 Note
  • Bundled clear cover for protecting the phone
  • Good display - solid brightness levels, contrast ratio, sunlight legibility and viewing angles
  • Display has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection unlike the K4 Note
  • Lenovo’s Vibe UI adds some useful features on top of Android
  • Good speed/performance, including with games
  • Multitasking is smooth too, thanks to the ample RAM
  • Built-in support for VR glasses, similar to the K4 Note (ANT VR headset has to be purchased separately)
  • Decent, fast rear camera, especially for daylight shots - macro shots are good too and HDR shots came out well
  • The 8MP front-facing camera is good for selfies and video chats - colors are vibrant and the images are sharp as well
  • Fast fingerprint sensor
  • Thanks to Dolby Atmos, Wolfson WM8281 audio codec and 1.5W speaker, loudspeaker output is good and clear even in full volume
  • Audio output through headphones is good as well
  • Good call quality
  • Good battery life - a definite improvement over the K4 Note - lasts a full day
  • Useful power saving modes to further reduce battery consumption
Editor's Note [Negatives]
  • While the performance is good overall, it is not the best in this price bracket, even with the generous 4GB of RAM - specifically the Snapdragon 617 is not quite the newest or fastest chipset around, falling behind the likes of the Snapdragon 650 powered Redmi Note 3 and Le 2
  • Average rear and front cameras - image details, and dynamic range could certainly have been better
  • Video recording performance is quite average too, with videos often looking grainy and low on details
  • Hybrid dual SIM slot lets you either use dual SIMS or a memory card, but not both together
  • No special support for quick charging unlike some of its competitors
  • Low-light camera performance of the phone is strictly average - with plenty of noise in the shots
