2-minute Review [Positives]
  • The design follows on from the previous generation of iPhones - with the same excellent build quality, Apple's famed attention to detail, and beautiful aesthetics - in fact, the phone looks almost identical to the previous generation of the iPhone
  • Splash, and water resistant
  • Excellent display, improving a bit over the previous iPhones with a "wide color gamut" screen and enhanced color accuracy
  • iOS 10 is excellent and now makes more sense out of 3D Touch, enhances the lock screen and allows third-party integration with Siri and Maps
  • Of course, iOS also has an industry-leading software update program - you are guaranteed to get all iOS updates in the next few years as soon as they are out
  • Phenomenal, top-tier performance backed by the new A10 chip, beating Samsung's flagship phones for instance by a significant margin in benchmark tests (although in practical terms, you might only notice the speed on some intensive games and the video and photo-editing apps)
  • Excellent front and rear cameras - significantly improved from the already good iPhone 6S
  • The camera now comes with optical image stabilization - delivering much improved photos, especially in low light
  • The four-LED flash is brighter too
  • The front-facing FaceTime camera has been bumped to 7 megapixels now, and it looks great for selfies or videos
  • Good battery life - lasts a couple of hours longer than the previous iPhones (though it is no match for some of the large battery Android phones out there now)
  • Enhanced (louder, and now stereo) speakers
  • Good audio quality
  • Very good call quality
  • Much improved haptics with Apple's updated "Taptic Engine"
  • Excellent build quality, and well crafted design
  • Hits a sweet spot in terms of weight and heft, and feels comfortable to hold
  • Beautiful display
  • Fingerprint reader on the back is fast and accurate, and as a bonus you can use it to slide down notifications on the screen
  • The first device to feature Android 7.1 which brings in a few new features like launcher shortcuts (Google's take on Apple's 3D Touch)
  • Coming directly from Google, regular Android updates are ensured - something that other Android flagships can't match
  • The key differentiator though is the built-in Google Assistant - the search giant's new, thoroughly robust voice-and-search service - it's the most powerful and natural voice assistant yet (beating Apple's Siri and Microsoft' Cortana) and uses machine learning and Google's vast search database to answer all kinds of questions you throw its way - think of it as Google Now evolved
  • It can also schedule reminders, look up facts and places to eat, set alarms, give directions, translate phrases and more
  • Smooth, slick performance, even with graphics-intensive games, backed by top-of-the-line hardware (matching other Android flagships in benchmarks, though falling a little behind the iPhone 7 which is the fastest phone right now)
  • Fantastic camera - rivaling the already great camera of the Apple iPhone 7 Plus - the camera is fast, images are in focus, colors look vibrant, and landscape scenes retain an impressive amount of detail and depth, even with objects that are far away
  • Low light performance is especially good
  • The front-facing camera is excellent, too - it has a wide enough lens to fit a lot of faces in each frame, and it softens skin tones enough to look appealing without appearing too airbrushed
  • The camera can shoot 4K video, and though it doesn't have optical image stabilization, it uses a combination of the gyroscope and software to steady your videos which works pretty well
  • Good call quality
  • Nice, clear, balanced loudspeaker (though it's not stereo, which would have been great)
  • Good battery life - survives a solid work day with medium to heavy usage - on the whole it does better than the iPhone 7, LG G5, HTC 10 and Motorola Moto Z, but is behind the Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Supports fast charging technology (though it's not as fast as some of the other flagships)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • No big changes in design from the last two iPhone versions
  • The Jet black version is a fingerprint and scratch magnet (so, use it with a case)
  • The new click-free home button takes getting used to because there's no mechanical click when you press the home button
  • Misses out on the dual camera setup of the the iPhone 7 plus
  • The missing standard (3.5mm) headphone jack on the phone means that you won't be able to easily use your regular earphones with the iPhone now (though compatible EarPods come included in the case, as well as a Lightning-to-regular-headphone adapter dongle)
  • Lacks fast charging support (which is now present on most of the Android flagships)
  • On the whole, while there are significant changes from last year's iPhone 6S, but they may not be thrilling enough to warrant an upgrade
  • For a flagship phone, the design is, on the whole, uninspiring (although this is subjective)
  • Sunlight legibility of the display is average
  • The camera's lens blur feature to get artsy background blurs on portrait shots doesn't work as well as that on the iPhone 7 Plus
  • Although the phone has some basic dust and water resistance, it can't quite handle a dunking like the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, and Samsung's 2016 flagships
