2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Excellent metal unibody design with a premium look and feel, top notch build quality
  • Add to that the minimal bezel 18:9 display, and the Honor 7X is a definite looker
  • The metal body curves on the sides and along the edges, giving this phone a good in-hand feel
  • Reasonably light at 165 grams
  • Beautiful, large, immersive display - watching movies and games is a great experience
  • Viewing angles are good too, and Honor lets you tweak the colour temperature to suit your preferences
  • The fingerprint scanner at the back is easy to reach and quick to unlock the phone
  • Honor's custom EMUI skin is decent (though not the best) and has a thoughtful single-handed mode which makes the phone easier to use despite its big screen
  • Good, solid, peppy performance backed by the same combination of processor and RAM as the Honor 9i
  • Both rear and front camera clicks are good in well lit conditions - and both have bokeh mode
  • Decent battery life - will comfortably last the work day with moderate use
  • If your primary requirement is for a large, bezel-less display for reading content and watching movies, then the 7X will make a good choice
  • Beautiful, elegant notch-based full screen design (that is clearly inspired from the iPhone X) - the device feels slick in the hand, with subtle curves on the back - and it looks great
  • In terms of the ease of using the one-handed, the Vivo V9 actually goes one up on the iPhone X - it packs a bigger screen (6.2 inches) - and is still feels incredibly easy to use one hand
  • Fast fingerprint sensor
  • Effective face unlock
  • The tall 19:9 display is bright and vibrant, and ticks all the right boxes
  • Facial recognition to unlock works very well too
  • Vivo's custom Android UI (Funtouch) is very inspired from iOS too - it works decently well, although a lot of Android users do tend to prefer close-to-stock Android UIs
  • The UI also brings in a new gesture based navigation system, that operates without buttons (a la iPhone X), and thus gives you even more screen real estate to play with - the system itself is not too difficult to get a hang of - so it works out pretty well - and makes navigation on the V9 feel more 2018 than getting around on, say, a Samsung Galaxy S9 with its standard touch buttons
  • Decent set of rear and front cameras, especially in daylight - colors are accurate, dynamic range is slightly above average, and the camera focuses relatively fast - of course, photo quality falls quite a bit short when compared to an iPhone X or Galaxy S9 - but for the price range, it's decent
  • Dedicated Dual SIM and MicroSD card slots
  • Decent battery life - will last the day with moderate use
  • On the whole, the Vivo V9 is an all-round good device in this price range - especially for people who are more interested in a great design, great screen, and decent cameras - at the cost of a little bit of raw performance power
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Performance is good in daily use, but graphically intensive games will stutter - there are better performing phones available in this price bracket
  • Rear and front cameras are quite good but not the best - low light performance and portrait/bokeh mode are sometimes hit-and-miss
  • Average loudspeaker - audio from videos and music is not the best
  • Uses the older micro-USB port, instead of the USB-C standard
  • No fast charging support - will take about two and a half hours to charge fully
  • At this price range, the Honor 7X faces strong competition from the Xiaomi Mi A1 - while it doesn’t come with as impressive a display as the Honor 7X - it does boast a superior set of cameras, and stock Android OS (along with guaranteed Android updates in the future), which may make it an overall better choice for most users
  • The Funtouch Android UI continues to come pre-installed with about six or seven bloatware apps - which could have been avoided
  • While the performance is good in regular use, the Snapdragon 626 chipset inside is not the best of the pack in this price bracket
  • Doesn't support the modern USB-C port
