2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Premium, good looking design, with nice rounded corners, and a glass back
  • Light-weight at just 145g
  • Fast, accurate fingerprint scanner at the back
  • Supports facial recognition too (and it works well)
  • Good, tall, 5.84 inch 'bezel-less' display with a notch at the top
  • EMUI is now one of the better Android skins around, and has a lot of useful customizations
  • Decent performance similar to phones with the Snapdragon 625 processors - both regular use and casual games will be smooth and lag-free
  • Good set of dual rear cameras, with a nice bokeh effect, and bright colors (especially in daylight) - comparable to the other very good camera phone in this price bracket, the Redmi Note 5 Pro
  • The front camera has a 16Mp sensor and is pretty good too
  • Has a new, modern 'infinity edge' 18:9 display, that stretches from edge-to-edge, and makes the device easy to use with one hand
  • Samsung Experience UI is a fairly feature-rich Android skin - you get tons of features such as a theme store, gesture support, built-in smart assistant which can let you do anything with your voice, enhanced split screen controls, parallel apps, and more (although it does tend to pack plenty of bloatware too)
  • Pretty decent rear dual cameras, especially in daylight - both normal pictures and bokeh shots come out fairly good - they are plenty sharp, have little noise, and colors and dynamic range are generally on point
  • Pretty decent front camera too, in good lighting conditions, with support for bokeh selfies, and group selfies
  • Additionally, the camera also brings in a lot of funky and cool camera modes
  • Good call quality with effective noise cancellation
  • Very good battery life - the big 3500 mAh battery, combined with the low power Snapdragon 450 processor and a 720p HD+ display gives you a recipe for some very good battery life - the phone comfortably lasts a whole day and if you use it judiciously, you can even make it last for two days
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • EMUI is getting better with time, but is still a little cluttered
  • While performance is decent for most use cases, there are many better performing phones in this price bracket
  • Average loudspeaker
  • Battery life is average - with light to medium use, you will found yourself reaching for the charger by 7-8pm each day
  • Although the phone does theoretically support quick charging, a quick charging adapter is not included with the phone (will have to be purchased separately)
  • On the whole, while the P20 Lite is a good looking phone with a good display and good cameras, it's let down by performance and battery to some extent - it will find it difficult to compete on value with the likes of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, Asus Zenfone Max M1 Pro, Honor 7X, and Honor 9i
  • Boring, repeated design
  • Plastic based build (most of the competition is metal phones)
  • The quality of the display is strictly average - the resolution is low, and brightness levels and sunlight legibility leave a lot to be desired
  • Day-to-day performance is good with the Snapdragon 450, but gaming performance is not that good - a lot of the competition has much better specced processors
  • While both rear and front cameras perform well in good lighting conditions, they are pretty ordinary when it comes to low-light performance
  • Uses the old micro-USB standard instead of the modern USB-C port
  • The speaker is both oddly placed (on the right side of the phone) and tiny and cracks at higher volume
  • No fast charging support
  • On the whole, while seen in isolation, the On8 is a decent phone, it is in a category which is filled with smartphones which are much better looking, have better displays, are more powerful, and overall bring a better value for money - you can look at the Redmi Note 5 Pro which is better than the Galaxy On8 on each and every spec and costs less - if you don’t like MIUI, you can take a look at the ZenFone Max Pro which brings better specs, stock Android and a huge 5000 mAh battery

  7. The Huawei P20 Lite has some of the nicest fit and finish in the mid-range space, plus some powerful features that set it apart from the competition – but an older processor means its days are numbered
