Our Opinion

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro is a slightly better phone, but the LG Q6 Plus is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? It’s a close call, but if your budget allows for it, then Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro might be a slightly better choice.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Well built, and feel quite sturdy in hand
  • Beautiful design - arguably the best looking device in the sub Rs 20k price category - in fact looks like a miniaturised version of LG's premium flagship G6 - the metal side rails, along with the glossy plastic back give the phone an upmarket look
  • The edges are metallic and rounded, which makes the phone easier to grip - it is also well weighted and very ergonomic for the screen size it offers
  • Has the same Full Vision display that's found in the LG G6, that will make it a conversation starter every time you take it out of your pocket - essentially, the display is a little taller than the standard 1080p resolution - it has a 2160 x 1080p resolution, which takes the aspect ratio from the standard 16:9 to 18:9 - in tandem, the top and bottom bezels have been drastically minimised, which adds to the phone’s unique look - moreover, the Full Vision display not only makes the phone look good, but makes the whole footprint smaller - this means, the LG Q6 with its 5.5-inch display, is just a hair bigger than say the 5-inch Lenovo Z2 Plus
  • As for the display quality, it is pretty good too, and one of the best in the category - viewing angles are very good, it is easily viewable outdoors and under direct sun-light, and with luminance readings of 605 lux, offers ample brightness as well - the display also has Gorilla Glass3 protection on top for scratch protection and the touch response is quite good too
  • LG's UI is decent in terms of aesthetics and functionality
  • Decent rear camera - images have ample details and sharpness
  • The 1080p video recording is sharp and detailed, with good colors and excellent audio
  • Decent call quality
  • Decent call quality
  • Good battery life - lasts a day even with heavy use
  • Decent (though not exceptional) charging speed - 0 to 100 in a little over 2 hours
  • On the whole, the Q6 is a good option for more casual users, who put more stock in design than internal hardware specs - but for users looking for more heavy-use apps/games, better performers like the Moto G5 Plus, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Honor 6X, Samsung Galaxy On Max etc will make more sense - all these smartphones offer better gaming performance (although day-to-day performance is pretty much same)
  • Attractive, sturdy, unibody design - easily one of the better looking devices in this price bracket - build quality and materials are flagship-grade
  • Fairly ergonomic too
  • Very good sAMOLED display, arguably the best in this price bracket - high resolution, good viewing angles, good colour reproduction - videos look excellent - and sunlight legibility is great too (on par with more expensive phones, and better than Samsung's own Galaxy J7 Max in this price bracket)
  • Samsung's UI over Android is light, and works well - with some nice add-ons like social camera, and Samsung Pay
  • Decent performance in day-to-day use
  • Good rear camera - pretty similar to the one on the very good J7 Max - making it one of the best cameras in this price bracket - and a good shooter even for low light situations
  • Very good audio output from both headphones, and loudspeaker
  • Separate slots for Dual SIMs and SD card (instead of a hybrid slot)
  • Very good battery life - among the best in this price bracket - will comfortably last the day even with heavy use
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • No fingerprint scanner
  • The phone does come with a “face unlock” feature - but it is a little slow
  • No notification LED
  • The UI is decent but LG does include a lot of duplicate apps for pre-built Android functionality - all this bloatware could have been avoided
  • Although day-to-day performance is just fine, performance with processor-intensive apps/games is behind the competition
  • The camera app is pretty bare bones apart from panorama and food mode, the phone doesn't really let you tweak settings further
  • Average front facing camera - both dynamic range, and detail level are lacking
  • The speaker is located on the back side which means it can easily get muffled if you place the phone on a table or couch, face up - it also tends to sound tinny at high volumes
  • Uses micro-USB port instead of the more modern USB-C standard
  • Performance could certainly have been better, and while its good enough in daily use, it's not quite what you would call snappy, and it doesn't match up to its top competitors - so, if your only use case is casual social networkings, emails, videos - then the phone will do fine, else there will be better options in this price bracket
  • While the rear camera is pretty good, it does sometimes take too long to focus, and sometimes underexposes pictures, and that takes away from the dependability a little bit
  • Front camera is good too, but it is focused a bit too close, which can lead to blurry shots when the phone is held a bit far
  • No support for fast charging
  • If design, battery life and brand name are the main criteria then the Galaxy J7 Pro is a good choice, but it has some tough competition from the likes of OnePlus 3T (more powerful + more dependable camera), and Moto G5S Plus on the lower end (almost as good in all criteria, at a lower price)
