Our Opinion

The Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro is a slightly better phone, but the LG V20 is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? It’s a close call, but if your budget allows for it, then Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro might be a slightly better choice.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Excellent build quality - one of the best phones LG has ever made in this regard - built for durability and longevity
  • Transit drop compliant / shockproof
  • Bright, attractive, flagship-level screen
  • Unique (and useful) "secondary screen" functionality, that can be customized to your needs - serving notifications when the phone is in standby, and listing recent apps/favorite apps/most common contacts etc, when the phone is active
  • LG's highly customizable UI over Android is fairly pleasant to use
  • The performance with the Snapdragon 820 chipset shines, even compared against other S820-powered phones - the phone is fast and fluid throughout
  • Dual-FoV cameras on the front and back are very good with excellent microphones and Qualcomm's EIS image stabilization
  • Having a wide-angle view in addition to the normal camera FoV for both the main camera and the selfie cam is fun leaving room for lots of experimentation in creative framing
  • The extensive manual controls offered by the V20 for both photos and video taking are matched by none other (not even Lumias)
  • The V20 loudspeaker is among the loudest on a phone, and the sound quality is excellent
  • The sound quality is excellent via headphones too
  • Very good call quality
  • Decent battery life - though lower than what the best phablets offer
  • Quick charging support and a replaceable battery
  • On the whole, the LG V20 is more a niche audience device, than a mainstream device - it is built for power users, camera fanatics, audio enthusiasts, and content creators - they’re the ones who would appreciate the full package of features that the V20 has to offer
  • Elegant, premium metal design
  • At 6.9 mm, it is really slim - doesn’t feel like a “big phone” when you first hold it - its slim profile and the slight curves near the edges make for a decent and comfortable grip
  • Samsung has also made it much narrower than the Mi Max and Asus Zenfone 3 Ultra, making this the most ergonomic of all phablets in the market right now
  • That's not the only ergonomic advantage this phone has - it is also considerably lighter than its peers at 189 grams
  • Very good display with punchy and pleasantly oversaturated colours - viewing angles, and brightness levels are excellent too
  • The huge size of the display makes it especially well suited for media consumption
  • Auto-brightness adjustments are smooth as well
  • Touchwiz UI over Android is light, and adds a nice bunch of features like the "Always On" display
  • Very good performance - has oodles of RAM and the Snapdragon 653 inside is slick and fast - in regular use, the phone is fluid and doesn't skip a beat in any way - things are largely flagship-like, and it's only in the most demanding games that you might notice a performance drop from the Snapdragon 820/821
  • Decent rear camera - daylight shot are good most of the times, macro shots are good, thanks to the f/1.9 aperture, HDR shots are good as well, low-light shots could have been better
  • Decent front camera, with good level of details
  • Decent battery life - for a regular user - there is a full work day’s worth of battery life and then some more
  • Supports fast charging, with 10-100% charge possible in just under an hour
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The phone is really well built, but it is not the prettiest, or most elegant phone out there - the focus is more on durability than aesthetics - so it doesn't look as premium as its price
  • Misses out on water resistance that is present in some other flagships
  • Not particularly easy to use with one hand
  • Although manual video controls and Hi-Fi sound recording are great for photography pros/enthusiasts, the average user might find them a bit of an overkill for a phone
  • The phone has bit of a tendency to heat up when put under stress
  • Fingerprint sensor is on the slower side - and it's accuracy also could have been better
  • Has a tendency to heat up, when pushed in terms of performance
  • No support for 4K video capture, or slow motion video recording, that is generally expected at this price point
