2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Compact, easy to handle, good hand feel
  • Solid, modern 18:9 screen - brightness is high enough for use outdoors, contrast is perfectly solid, and viewing angles are decent too
  • Motorola continues it's winning approach with software here, essentially shipping a stock Android UI with a few useful additions in the form of Motorola Actions (simple gestures that, for example, let you silence notifications by laying the Moto E5 down on its screen), and Motorola Display (a display that pops up when the E5 is in standby, and you pick it up or move it - it shows the time, and icons representing any recent notifications)
  • Decent 13 megapixel rear camera - matches up to the level of other good budget camera phones - in daylight you can take reasonably sharp and detailed images
  • Decent selfie camera too, as much as you can expect in this budget
  • Excellent battery life - you will comfortably get all-day use, and with lighter use you can expect even 2 days of use
  • Looks premium with a a high-gloss plastic back that looks like glass from afar - in fact from far away it can be easily confused for it's more expensive sibling the Moto G6
  • Decent fingerprint scanner in the rear
  • Modern, tall, 18:9 display with slimmer bezels - it's reasonably bright and vivid
  • In typical Moto fashion, the Moto E5 Plus run a clean, bloat-free version of Android, with minimal useful add-ons like Moto Display, Moto Actions, and Night Mode
  • Decent day-to-day performance - for light workloads, the phone will perform just fine
  • Decent rear camera in favorable lighting conditions, for the price bracket
  • Decent front camera in favorable lighting conditions, for the price bracket
  • Video recording is decent too with reasonably good stabilisation
  • Call quality is pretty good too
  • Excellent battery life - with a 5000mAh battery, the E5 Plus is a road warrior, and can last you up to 2 days with moderate use, before you need to charge it again
  • Fast charging support (TurboCharge) - the phone gets from 0 to 50% in about an hour
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Looks fairly boring, and plain
  • Sluggish day-to-day performance, due to a budget Snapdragon 425 with 2GB of RAM - the combination means that web pages and apps take a tad long to load, and there are lags and stutters here and there
  • The camera too has a little shutter lag when shooting normal photos, and even more of a delay with HDR images - also the camera app is prone to the same load lag as other apps too - you often have to wait around three seconds for the camera to initialise
  • Limited 16GB of internal storage means you might quickly hit storage limits if you use a few heavy apps, and then have to shift to using a memory card, which will downgrade the performance further
  • On the whole, given the performance limitations of the Moto E5, it might make more sense for most users to invest a little bit more and get more reliable performance with the Moto G6 Play
  • Weighing in at 197g and with large dimensions, the Moto E5 Plus is quite a bulky phone, and can be unwieldy - it is too wide and tall to be used comfortably with one hand
  • The plastic back gets scratched very easily and is a fingerprint magnet - it is also very slippery - so using a case is a good idea
  • The display resolution is on the low side
  • Performance is alright in daily use, but there are certainly significantly better performing phones around in this price bracket
  • Average loudspeaker - both loudness and audio quality could have been a bit better
  • The Moto E5 Plus is a decent phone by itself, and is a especially good choice if you value battery life above all else, but other devices from Xiaomi, Asus, Realme in this price bracket will likely be better overall deals

  2. Road warriors should should definitely consider the Moto E5 Plus, but others will be better served by heavyweights such as the Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1, Redmi Note 5, and Realme 1
