2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Top-grade metal build, offering a significant improvement over the Moto G5 Plus - this is the best-looking Moto G phone to date, and the build quality is comparable to much more expensive phones
  • Useful water repelling nano coating
  • Accurate/fast fingerprint scanner in the bezel below the screen
  • The scanner can also be used to replace the on-screen soft keys - a left swipe is ‘back’, a right one brings up recent apps - a useful feature carried over from previous Moto G phones
  • Good, sharp, punchy display - color is very good, and viewing angles are great
  • Like other Moto phones, the Moto G5S Plus uses a virtually untouched version of Android rather than a custom interface - keeping things nice and simple
  • The simple but useful Moto add-ons remain of course, including the Moto Display (ambient display notifications), and added gesture support
  • Good all-round speed/performance - both for day-to-day use and gaming
  • Pretty good dual rear camera setup, allows for a reasonably good bokeh effect - dynamic range enhancement is excellent too
  • When compared to the dual camera setup of it's main competitor the Xiaomi Mi A1, it outperforms the Mi A1 in low light conditions (although in well lit conditions, the Mi A1 tends to be better) - in fact in low light photography, it is arguably the best budget camera phone out there
  • The front camera is decent too, and has a pretty effective flash
  • Decent speaker - its pretty loud and has the extra shot of lower-frequency power needed in a tiny speaker to avoid sounding reedy and harsh
  • Good battery life - lasts the work day even with heavy use
  • Fast charging support - gets you six hours’ use in 15 minutes
  • Premium, sleek, glass-based design - this is easily the best looking Moto G to date
  • The rear edges of the G6 Plus are curved, and that allows it to sit much more comfortably in the palm of your hand than previous models – if you've seen the Samsung Galaxy S7, it’s a similar curvature on the back
  • Motorola has also kept the fingerprint sensor on the front of the phone, just below the display, but it doesn’t take up much space, so the bottom bezel is quite thin and looks good. The sensor is easy to hit, and works efficiently
  • Top-quality, modern, bright, Full HD+ IPS LCD display with then new 18:9 display ratio - it has good colors, and viewing angles too
  • Moto continues to excel in the software part, keeping the UI close to stock Android while adding just the right set of add-ons like Moto Actions (gesture control), night display, and fingerprint sensor based navigation
  • Good, solid performance, backed by the Snapdragon 630 - does well under all use cases, including games
  • Good set of dual rear cameras - pretty good for this price bracket - the focus is really quick, and pictures come out crisp and natural, and the portrait mode is decently implemented too
  • The phone also comes with image recognition software that enables you to take photos of objects you come across, or landmarks in a city you’re visiting, and get information about them, for example a Wikipedia page, or details of where you can buy an item
  • On the front of the Moto G6 Plus is a 8MP selfie camera, which is pretty decent too - it also has a filters mode, which overlays Snapchat-like frippery such as cat features or bunny ears (though it takes a long time to process images)
  • The front camera also has an effective group selfie mode that works similar to a panoramic images mode
  • Video recording is decent too, and there is a pretty decent slow-mo mode too
  • Good, powerful loudspeaker
  • Good battery life - will comfortably last the day with moderate to heavy use
  • Fast charging support
  • On the whole, the Moto G6 Plus looks great, has good software, performs good, and has a good set of cameras - all in all its a strong choice in this price bracket - it's a solid step up from it's younger cousin, the Moto G6, with better performance, camera and battery life - and could compete well with the likes of Nokia 6.1 (which has a more premium build, but lacks dual rear cameras) and the Redmi Note 5 Pro (which has better performance and battery, but lacks stock Android)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A somewhat large camera shutter lag is the one flaw in an otherwise good camera
  • The choice of a micro USB slot, instead of a USB-C one, is a little bit old-school
  • Tends to get a little warm when charging
  • A bit on the tall side - not as easy to grip as the smaller Moto G6
