2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Top-grade metal build, offering a significant improvement over the Moto G5 Plus - this is the best-looking Moto G phone to date, and the build quality is comparable to much more expensive phones
  • Useful water repelling nano coating
  • Accurate/fast fingerprint scanner in the bezel below the screen
  • The scanner can also be used to replace the on-screen soft keys - a left swipe is ‘back’, a right one brings up recent apps - a useful feature carried over from previous Moto G phones
  • Good, sharp, punchy display - color is very good, and viewing angles are great
  • Like other Moto phones, the Moto G5S Plus uses a virtually untouched version of Android rather than a custom interface - keeping things nice and simple
  • The simple but useful Moto add-ons remain of course, including the Moto Display (ambient display notifications), and added gesture support
  • Good all-round speed/performance - both for day-to-day use and gaming
  • Pretty good dual rear camera setup, allows for a reasonably good bokeh effect - dynamic range enhancement is excellent too
  • When compared to the dual camera setup of it's main competitor the Xiaomi Mi A1, it outperforms the Mi A1 in low light conditions (although in well lit conditions, the Mi A1 tends to be better) - in fact in low light photography, it is arguably the best budget camera phone out there
  • The front camera is decent too, and has a pretty effective flash
  • Decent speaker - its pretty loud and has the extra shot of lower-frequency power needed in a tiny speaker to avoid sounding reedy and harsh
  • Good battery life - lasts the work day even with heavy use
  • Fast charging support - gets you six hours’ use in 15 minutes
  • Premium, high-quality design - 2.5D curved glass at the front and smooth flowing curves round the back, along with a unibody anodized aluminum build
  • The curves at the back and the sleek 7.6mm profile make the Mi Max 2 relatively easier to hold, for a device of this size
  • Fast, accurate fingerprint sensor located at the back
  • Gigantic 6.44in display - pleasant, bright, viewable in direct sunlight, accurate colors, and excellent viewing angles - you can adjust the contrast levels, and there's also the option to toggle sRGB mode - the large screen is great for viewing video and playing games
  • MIUI is a light and clean Android UI, with a lot of customization options
  • Additional software features include a screen shrinker, blue-light filter, built-in video editor in the gallery, scrolling screenshots, and Quick ball to launch apps with ease - all useful stuff
  • Performance is good and smooth too - powered by the Snapdragon 625 and comes with 4GB of RAM, along with 64GB of storage - does a good job of crunching through everyday tasks (the only place where you'll notice the odd stutter is the most visually demanding games)
  • Decent rear camera - especially in daylight conditions - takes detailed images, and Auto HDR makes a noticeable difference - the camera is a definite step-up from the first-gen model
  • Decent front camera too, in daylight conditions
  • The dual speaker combination is well done and gets sufficiently loud, without distortion at high volumes
  • Infrared sensors have been a mainstay on Xiaomi phones for several years now, and that hasn't changed with the Mi Max 2, allowing you to control your TV, air conditioner, or set-top box with the phone
  • Amazing battery life - with a giant 5300mAh battery into the chassis - easily lasts 2 days with moderate use - this is tablet-class territory, and the Mi Max 2 is in fact better than most 7-inch tablets when it comes to battery life - the battery combined with the large screen makes for a potent combination, particularly if you're interested in viewing a lot of multimedia content
  • Also has Quick Charge 3.0 over USB-C, allowing you to charge up to 68% of the battery's capacity in just over an hour, or enough juice to last an entire day
  • On the whole, with a 6.44-inch display and a massive 5300mAh battery, Xiaomi's latest phablet is the ideal device for consuming multimedia on the go, and an excellent option if you are looking for a combined phone-tablet experience, and don't mind carrying around a large device in daily use - it is a portable all-in-one that allows you to comfortably watch videos and movies, play games, and read books on the go
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A somewhat large camera shutter lag is the one flaw in an otherwise good camera
  • The choice of a micro USB slot, instead of a USB-C one, is a little bit old-school
  • Tends to get a little warm when charging
  • This is of course a big phone, so if ease-of-carrying or one-handed use are primary concerns, then you want to look at other options
  • Both the rear and the front camera, while good in day-light conditions, are not that great in low-light conditions, and in video-recording quality

  1. No stunts, no trickery, not even split screen multi-tasking - just a sensible design, big screen and a big battery.
