2-minute Review [Positives]
  • One of the best-looking phones in this class - even though the back is plastic it looks classy with reflective elements under the top layer responding well to light
  • It's also likely to be more durable in the long run, compared to it's senior G6 series cousins with all-glass bodies
  • Easy to use with one hand
  • The trendy new 18:9 extra-tall display adds to the looks too
  • The display is pretty good otherwise too - it has decent brightness, contrast and sunlight legibility - the only thing you are really loosing compared to the regular G6 is resolution
  • Software continues to be Motorola's strong suit with a a fine blend of vanilla Android and just the right amount of useful proprietary customizations (like Moto Actions)
  • Decent day-to-day performance backed by a Snapdragon 430 - it’s not a super-powerful chipset but does get you more-than-acceptable performance in most areas, including simple gaming
  • Good rear camera, especially in daylight - the default Auto HDR mode works well, and colors are well-saturated and natural (the only place really where the Moto G6 Play camera loses out to its senior cousins is the absence of a secondary camera for bokeh effects, and somewhat worse low light performance)
  • EIS for video is a great little bonus and it works surprisingly well
  • Decent front camera too, with a relatively subtle Beauty mode to zap your eye bags
  • Decent, clean audio quality through the 3.5mm jack
  • There's a dedicated MicroSD cars slot on the SIM tray, so you can have to SIM cards and and SD at the same time
  • Great battery life - the 4000mAh unit lets the Motorola Moto G6 Play plough on through a full day of intensive use - with lighter use you should find you have 40-50% left by bed time
  • Supports fast charging (which is uncommon at this price point) - gets you from flat to 100% charge in under two hours
  • Premium, sleek, glass-based design - this is easily the best looking Moto G to date
  • The rear edges of the G6 Plus are curved, and that allows it to sit much more comfortably in the palm of your hand than previous models – if you've seen the Samsung Galaxy S7, it’s a similar curvature on the back
  • Motorola has also kept the fingerprint sensor on the front of the phone, just below the display, but it doesn’t take up much space, so the bottom bezel is quite thin and looks good. The sensor is easy to hit, and works efficiently
  • Top-quality, modern, bright, Full HD+ IPS LCD display with then new 18:9 display ratio - it has good colors, and viewing angles too
  • Moto continues to excel in the software part, keeping the UI close to stock Android while adding just the right set of add-ons like Moto Actions (gesture control), night display, and fingerprint sensor based navigation
  • Good, solid performance, backed by the Snapdragon 630 - does well under all use cases, including games
  • Good set of dual rear cameras - pretty good for this price bracket - the focus is really quick, and pictures come out crisp and natural, and the portrait mode is decently implemented too
  • The phone also comes with image recognition software that enables you to take photos of objects you come across, or landmarks in a city you’re visiting, and get information about them, for example a Wikipedia page, or details of where you can buy an item
  • On the front of the Moto G6 Plus is a 8MP selfie camera, which is pretty decent too - it also has a filters mode, which overlays Snapchat-like frippery such as cat features or bunny ears (though it takes a long time to process images)
  • The front camera also has an effective group selfie mode that works similar to a panoramic images mode
  • Video recording is decent too, and there is a pretty decent slow-mo mode too
  • Good, powerful loudspeaker
  • Good battery life - will comfortably last the day with moderate to heavy use
  • Fast charging support
  • On the whole, the Moto G6 Plus looks great, has good software, performs good, and has a good set of cameras - all in all its a strong choice in this price bracket - it's a solid step up from it's younger cousin, the Moto G6, with better performance, camera and battery life - and could compete well with the likes of Nokia 6.1 (which has a more premium build, but lacks dual rear cameras) and the Redmi Note 5 Pro (which has better performance and battery, but lacks stock Android)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Has a micro USB charge socket rather than the newer USB-C on the senior Moto G6 phones
  • Lacks the water repellent nano-coating of the senior Moto G6 phones
  • The performance is decent in day-to-day use, but there are some phones with better CPUs now in this price bracket (though that is likely to matter only if you are into gaming)
  • Camera, though decent, is a bit on the slow side too - you can only take roughly one shot a second
  • The speaker is not the most loud or clear
  • On the whole, the Moto G6 Play is a pretty decent phone on its own, especially because of it's fuss-free software, but it will face some stiff competition from Xiaomi, Asus and Realme phones, which offer significantly more powerful devices in this price bracket
  • A bit on the tall side - not as easy to grip as the smaller Moto G6
