Our Opinion

The Motorola Moto G6 Plus (6GB RAM) is a slightly better phone, but the realme 1 (6GB RAM, 128GB) is significantly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much your want to spend!

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Premium, sleek, glass-based design - this is easily the best looking Moto G to date
  • The rear edges of the G6 Plus are curved, and that allows it to sit much more comfortably in the palm of your hand than previous models – if you've seen the Samsung Galaxy S7, it’s a similar curvature on the back
  • Motorola has also kept the fingerprint sensor on the front of the phone, just below the display, but it doesn’t take up much space, so the bottom bezel is quite thin and looks good. The sensor is easy to hit, and works efficiently
  • Top-quality, modern, bright, Full HD+ IPS LCD display with then new 18:9 display ratio - it has good colors, and viewing angles too
  • Moto continues to excel in the software part, keeping the UI close to stock Android while adding just the right set of add-ons like Moto Actions (gesture control), night display, and fingerprint sensor based navigation
  • Good, solid performance, backed by the Snapdragon 630 - does well under all use cases, including games
  • Good set of dual rear cameras - pretty good for this price bracket - the focus is really quick, and pictures come out crisp and natural, and the portrait mode is decently implemented too
  • The phone also comes with image recognition software that enables you to take photos of objects you come across, or landmarks in a city you’re visiting, and get information about them, for example a Wikipedia page, or details of where you can buy an item
  • On the front of the Moto G6 Plus is a 8MP selfie camera, which is pretty decent too - it also has a filters mode, which overlays Snapchat-like frippery such as cat features or bunny ears (though it takes a long time to process images)
  • The front camera also has an effective group selfie mode that works similar to a panoramic images mode
  • Video recording is decent too, and there is a pretty decent slow-mo mode too
  • Good, powerful loudspeaker
  • Good battery life - will comfortably last the day with moderate to heavy use
  • Fast charging support
  • On the whole, the Moto G6 Plus looks great, has good software, performs good, and has a good set of cameras - all in all its a strong choice in this price bracket - it's a solid step up from it's younger cousin, the Moto G6, with better performance, camera and battery life - and could compete well with the likes of Nokia 6.1 (which has a more premium build, but lacks dual rear cameras) and the Redmi Note 5 Pro (which has better performance and battery, but lacks stock Android)
  • Bold, stunning design thanks to the diamond-like reflective body - this is a device that certainly stands out - it is housed inside a fibre-glass casing that has been cut at different angles such that each section of the glass back turns to a different shade of black when light is reflecting off it!
  • Lightweight and well built
  • Decent, modern 18:9 display with minimal bezels - which means that despite the large screen size, the phone will fit nicely into your hand
  • Good all-round performance, similar to Snapdragon 636 phones, like the Redmi Note 5 Pro
  • Decent rear and front cameras - both the cameras support depth of field or Portrait effect, and Augmented Reality (AR) stickers
  • The rear camera pictures are reasonably crisp, and have decent color reproduction
  • The front camera relies heavily on Oppo’s AI algorithms to fine-tune the photos which results in good (if slightly artificial looking) photos
  • Overall, cameras are decent, but not quite up to the high benchmark of the Redmi Note 5 Pro
  • Dedicated dual SIM card slots and microSD slot
  • Supports VoLTE on both the dual sim slots
  • Good battery life - easily gives over a day’s usage for an average user
  • On the whole, the Realme 1 offers a very solid option in spite of being in a super competitive price segment having some great phones by the likes of Xiaomi and Asus - if an interesting design, fast performance and good battery life are your primary concerns, then it should definitely be towards the top of your shortlist
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A bit on the tall side - not as easy to grip as the smaller Moto G6
  • No fingerprint sensor, so you have to rely on the face unlock for quick unlocking (which does work quite well)
  • The display is decent on the whole, but outdoor visibility is pretty ordinary
  • Oppo's Color OS UI is not the most refined Android UI, and looks cluttered at places
  • No support for fast charging - the phones take a little over two hours to charge from zero to full
