Our Opinion

The Oppo F5 (6GB RAM, 64GB) is a significantly better phone, but the Oppo F3 Plus (6GB RAM) is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much you want to spend! But from a pure value perspective, we recommend the Oppo F5 (6GB RAM, 64GB).

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • The F3 Plus continues the Oppo tradition of excellent build quality, finish and design, with a well-designed metal unibody
  • Rounded edges make it relatively comfortable to hold
  • The 6-inch display is beautiful, sharp, and really dominates the front of the phone, thanks to thin borders on the sides
  • One of the advantages of lugging around a massive smartphone is the ability to really enjoy watching videos on such a large screen
  • The fingerprint sensor is quick for unlocking the device, and just like before, you can use it for other purposes like locking apps and files
  • ColorOS UI works well, is well optimised in terms of performance, and has aesthetics similar to iOS
  • Good overall performance backed by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 SoC, and 4GB of RAM (though benchmark numbers might not be as good as what's possible with a top-end Snapdragon 821 SoC but you’d be hard pressed to actually tell the difference in daily usage)
  • Very good set of dual front cameras - unlike other dual front cameras, the second front camera here isn’t used for depth of field - instead, it has a wide-angle lens for group selfies, which is a much more practical idea that's likely to have a wider appeal (you can easily switch between the 2 cameras - one for individual selfies, and the other for group selfies)
  • Overall, pictures from the front cameras are detailed, and even have good low-light performance - this is arguably the best selfie camera in this price bracket
  • Rear camera is good too - daylight shots specially have very good detail and saturated colours that really pop - though the camera it's definitely not as good as the class-leading OnePlus 3/3T
  • The single speaker is quite powerful, and sound is loud and fairly distinct
  • Decent call quality
  • Very good battery life - lasts well beyond a single day of regular usage
  • Supports Oppo’s VOOC fast charging technology
  • Looks pretty good, with a beautiful, tall edge-to-edge display
  • Also pretty thin (7.5mm), and light (very manageable at 152g) - so it's easy to handle
  • The texture of the rear shell also makes this phone easy to grip
  • On the whole, as far as phones with extra-large screens go, this one is fairly easy to use and handle, and that's a big plus that goes in its favour
  • The fingerprint sensor on the back is surprisingly well within reach, and its slightly oblong shape means that it's hard to miss - it's also fast and accurate
  • There is also Face Unlock that works pretty well in most conditions - not quite as accurate as the iPhone X, but not far behind either in real-life conditions
  • The quality of the large display itself is very good - it's crisp and bright, with punchy colours and excellent viewing angles - everything from text to movies looks great, and you will find ourselves feeling immersed especially with video
  • Oppo's custom skin on Android, called ColorOS, is pretty expansive but also quite polished (with a lot of elements inspired by iOS
  • Bloatware is thankfully restricted to a few apps - Facebook, WPS Office and Amazon's Shopping and Prime Video apps
  • There are also useful add-on features like Clone Apps, Game Acceleration, and Gesture support
  • Good, reliable performance throughout - compares well to its main competitors like the Honor 9i and Vivo V7 Plus - and is generally similar to Snapdragon 625 in terms of performance
  • Pretty decent rear camera - does well even in low light, details come out well, and colours pop
  • Videos also come out quite sharp and smooth under different lighting conditions
  • Very good front camera too - does a very good job in most conditions, and there is also a whole new "AI-powered" selfie enhancement feature - easily one of the best selfie cameras you will get in this price bracket
  • The built-in speaker is decent, delivering generally clear and rich audio in games and videos
  • Strong connectivity suite - the Helio P23 chipset supports Dual SIM, Dual standby, as well as simultaneous VoLTE/ViLTE on both SIM slots
  • Good battery life - you will be able to get a day and a half of usage out of the Oppo F5 on a single charge, with moderate use
  • On the whole, its a good all-round phone and comes out ahead of competition like the Vivo V7+ and Asus Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Striking looks aside, there’s still no getting around the fact that this is a big phone, and quite heavy too
  • The buttons on the sides are a bit of a reach, even for someone with large hands
  • Colors on the display are pretty heavily saturated - which might not be to everyone's taste
  • Misses out on the modern USB standard - USB Type-C
  • No FM Radio
  • No NFC support
  • Uses the older Micro-USB port instead of the more modern Type-C standard
  • Average bundled headset
  • No support for fast charging - takes about an hour to get to 50% charge

  2. OPPO F5 is for those who don’t mind paying a premium for some great selfies, even if there are more well-rounded options at a lesser price in the market.
