2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Premium front and back glass design, with a metal frame sitting in between (similar to Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8)
  • IP68 certification for water and dust resistance
  • Beautiful 6 inch edge-to-edge display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio - you’ll love playing games, watching videos or web browsing on the screen - the display is gorgeous, and the color reproduction is pretty good - sunlight legibility is good too
  • Samsung's UI over Android is pretty lean and includes useful stuff like Secure Folder, and Samsung Pay (which comes with UPI, Paytm and Mobikwik integration)
  • The Bixby AI functionality adds useful stuff like Bixby Vision in the camera app, which lets you point the camera at an object or place to offer relevant results - you can also use Bixby Vision to scan QR Codes and point at text to translate in any given language supported by the assistant
  • Good speed/performance in daily use, as well as in high-end games
  • Decent (though not exceptional) front facing dual camera setup - has a good bokeh effect, especially in daylight
  • 'True' dual SIM experience
  • Good battery life - lasts the whole day even with heavy use
  • Decent 'fast-charging' support - charging from empty to full takes about an hour and 45 minutes
  • Premium glass-metal design
  • With small bezel size (just 2.7mm) the overall size is kept relatively manageable for such a large screen device
  • The flattened mid section too helps in making it easy to hold
  • Samsung's expertise in making good AMOLED screen shines through in the A9 Pro as well - although the resolution is relatively low at 1080p, the screen looks sharp, offers superb contrast, viewing angles and brightness
  • If you find the colours not to your liking, you can also switch modes from the display settings (adaptive/cinema photo/basic modes)
  • Good overall speed/performance, powered by the Snapdragon 652 processor, paired with 4GB RAM - offers the same class of performance as previous generation flagships - but falls behind the current Snapdragon 820 phones like Le Max 2 and Mi5 which are available in even lower price brackets
  • The 16MP primary camera offers good quality results and has optical image stabilization - although it is easily outclassed by the top camera phones in this price range like the OnePlus 3
  • The battery is massive at 5, 000mAh and combined with the efficient Snapdragon 652, delivers two full days of battery life
  • Fast charging support (30 minutes of charging will give you about a 30 per cent charge)
  • On the whole, if you want a really large screen smartphone from one of the top brands, A9 Pro is a good deal, but if you are ok about going with middle level or smaller brands, you can do better by getting better performance, more RAM, storage and better cameras at a cheaper price
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A little bit on the thick and heavy side, compared to its main competitors - the OnePlus 5T, and the Honor View 10
  • As in case with all the smartphones with glass panels, it is slippery and a bit of a fingerprint magnet (luckily Samsung has bundled a clear case along with the smartphone)
  • Face unlock is iffy and not too accurate (you are better off using the fingerprint sensor)
  • Samsung's Experience UI, while decent, could do with less of bloat
  • Rear camera is decent but falls behind it's main competitors - the OnePlus 5T, and the Honor View 10 - handling of details and exposures is ordinary, video recording is average, and low light performance is not great either
  • On the whole, seen in absolute terms, the Galaxy A8+ is a pretty decent all-round phone, but compared to the likes of OnePlus 5T and the Honor View 10 (the prevailing leaders in this price segment), it falls behind - the OnePlus 5T has a distinct edge in terms of software & performance - and the View 10 in terms of camera

  4. The Samsung Galaxy A8+ looks good, delivers on battery life, has an excellent build quality and offers IP68 certification. If these aspects score higher over core performance and camera quality, you can consider the Samsung Galaxy A8+
