2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Well built - the phone looks and feels quite premium
  • Good, bright, large display - decent colour reproduction, good viewing angles - good videos and movie watching experience
  • Good, accurate fingerprint sensor
  • On the top of Android, is Samsung's new UI - Samsung Experience - it is more refined compared to TouchWiz UX - and continues to have a number of added software features like Games Launcher, one-handed operation mode, Multi-window mode, Direct call (to make a voice call by picking up and holding the device near your ear while viewing call, message, or contact details)
  • Smart alert (to set the device to alert you if you have missed calls or new messages when you pick up the device), Gesture support, Dual Messenger (lets you use two separate accounts for the same app such as Facebook, WhatsApp and more), Secure Folder, Samsung Pay Mini, and others
  • Decent performance - 4GB of RAM is more than enough to run several applications in the background
  • Excellent rear camera in all lighting conditions, comparable to the Moto G5 Plus, which has otherwise been the top camera phone in this price bracket
  • White balance and dynamic range remains impressive in all situations
  • Good selfie camera too, with a front facing flash for low light selfies
  • Video recording quality is decent too (but the phone doesn’t have a secondary microphone so recorded audio is not crisp)
  • Audio through the bundled or third-party earphones is decent
  • Good call quality
  • Good Dual SIM management with Samsung's Smart Dual SIM feature (automatically forwards calls from the phone number on SIM 2, even if a user is on the phone with SIM 1’s number)
  • Good battery life - lasts for more than a day with average use - and power-saving modes can extend it even further
  • Very good, premium design, with top-notch metal construction
  • The overall form factor and weight remain quite ergonomic
  • Very good, balanced display - good responsiveness, brightness levels, and sunlight legibility
  • Runs clean, clutter-free and simple stock Android out of the box - and comes with the 'Android One series' update promise!
  • Strong, dependable performance, powered by a power-efficient Snapdragon 625 - running on stock Android eliminates some of the overheads on the processor and the phone presents a super smooth and lag free experience on general day-to-day things - it’s solid and will suffice for most except the most demanding of users
  • Good, solid dual-camera setup - Xiaomi’s stereo mode is its take on Apple’s “portrait mode”, and its task is to blur the background - the final effects are commendable most of the times - sometimes even better than much more expensive phones like the OnePlus 5 - making it easily the best dual camera system on a budget
  • Even in auto mode, the Mi A1 takes rich images with good levels of detail and colour saturation
  • There is also a very effective pro mode which even allows the user to individually choose between the wide angle camera and the telephoto lens - making for a very compelling camera package
  • Xiaomi also offers 2x optical zoom with this device - and the results are quite good
  • Video recording is decent too - it can shoot in 4k, and has time lapse and slow motion modes
  • The front 5-megapixel camera for selfies is decent too, though nothing exceptional
  • Good audio quality and volume via both headphones and the speaker
  • Good, dependable battery life - comfortably lasts a work day
  • Takes about 2 hours to charge fully - which is a decent charging speed
  • On the whole, if you are only concerned about performance and battery life, then the Redmi Note 4 may be a better choice, and if you care most about low light camera performance, then the Moto G5S Plus is at the top of the pack, but for an overall dependable phone with a dual camera setup, and stock Android experience, the Mi A1 is a brilliant choice
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Pretty big for single-handed use - also a bit heavy at 179 grams - might not suit people with small hands
  • Lacks a notification LED light - even though there is the Smart Glow feature around the rear camera, it doesn’t compensate fully for the lack of notification LED
  • Performance is decent, but not the best in this price bracket - it's a notch below the likes of the Moto G5 Plus, the Redmi Note 4, the Coolpad Cool 1 and Honor 6X
  • Lacks fast charging, which is present in some of its competitors - takes about 2 and half hours to charge the phone
  • The performance is solid and dependable but not the absolute best in this price bracket - that status belongs to the likes of the Redmi Note 4
  • The camera is quite good in daylight conditions, but falls behind in low light prowess compared to say the Moto G5 Plus or Samsung Galaxy J7 Max - low light photos can sometimes be blurry and they take considerable time to process
  • Battery life is again strong, but not the best in this price bracket - that is again a position that's held by Xiaomi's Redmi Note 4
