Our Opinion

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime 2 is a slightly better phone, but the Samsung Galaxy On7 Prime (3GB RAM, 32GB) is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? It’s a close call, but if your budget allows for it, then Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime 2 might be a slightly better choice.

2-minute Review [Positives] N/A
  • Great build quality
  • Good front facing fingerprint sensor
  • Samsung's Experience UI provides some decent add-ons over Android like Secure Folder, Samsung Pay Mini, Samsung Pass, Samsung Cloud, app locker, and power saving modes
  • There is also Samsung Mall, which is basically Bixby Vision in a brand new avatar - the Mall lets you shop via your camera - basically, you can use the app’s camera to capture a product which you are interested in - then, the app will recognise the product bring you listings from where you can buy it (online retailers including Amazon, Shopclues etc) - it is decent when it works, although it is a bit of a hit and miss
  • Good performance - app launches are fairly speedy, the phone unlocks quickly, multitasking is good
  • Decent front camera (better than the Mi A1, although a little bit behind the Honor 9 Lite with dual front cameras)
  • Another nice thing about the hardware is the speaker grills on the side - this means the speaker doesn’t get blocked even when playing games - plus, it helps that the speaker is good
  • There’s separate slots for the second SIM card and the microSD card - which is always good to have
  • Good battery life - you will comfortably get through the day with moderate to heavy use
  • Useful power saving modes
2-minute Review [Negatives] N/A
  • Although the build quality is good, the design of the phone is a little bland and old-school - and doesn't really stand up to the likes of well designed competitors like the Mi A1 and the Honor 7X
  • The display is ok, but could have been better - again it's left behind by the displays on Mi A1 and Honor 7X
  • The display also lacks an ambient light sensor, so brightness adjustments have to be done manually
  • Average rear camera - focusing is not the best, and there is quite a lot of noise in photos - once again the rear camera on the likes of Mi A1 fares much better
  • Uses the old microUSB port, instead of the modern USB-C
  • On the whole, the On7 will find it tough to compete against the likes of Mi A1 (with its amazing performance and decent dual cameras), the Honor 7X (with an 18:9 display and dual cameras) and the Honor 9 Lite (with an 18:9 display and 4 cameras) - all of which provide better value
