Our Opinion

The Vivo V9 is a significantly better phone, but the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 (4GB RAM, 64GB) is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much you want to spend! But from a pure value perspective, we recommend the Vivo V9.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Beautiful, elegant notch-based full screen design (that is clearly inspired from the iPhone X) - the device feels slick in the hand, with subtle curves on the back - and it looks great
  • In terms of the ease of using the one-handed, the Vivo V9 actually goes one up on the iPhone X - it packs a bigger screen (6.2 inches) - and is still feels incredibly easy to use one hand
  • Fast fingerprint sensor
  • Effective face unlock
  • The tall 19:9 display is bright and vibrant, and ticks all the right boxes
  • Facial recognition to unlock works very well too
  • Vivo's custom Android UI (Funtouch) is very inspired from iOS too - it works decently well, although a lot of Android users do tend to prefer close-to-stock Android UIs
  • The UI also brings in a new gesture based navigation system, that operates without buttons (a la iPhone X), and thus gives you even more screen real estate to play with - the system itself is not too difficult to get a hang of - so it works out pretty well - and makes navigation on the V9 feel more 2018 than getting around on, say, a Samsung Galaxy S9 with its standard touch buttons
  • Decent set of rear and front cameras, especially in daylight - colors are accurate, dynamic range is slightly above average, and the camera focuses relatively fast - of course, photo quality falls quite a bit short when compared to an iPhone X or Galaxy S9 - but for the price range, it's decent
  • Dedicated Dual SIM and MicroSD card slots
  • Decent battery life - will last the day with moderate use
  • On the whole, the Vivo V9 is an all-round good device in this price range - especially for people who are more interested in a great design, great screen, and decent cameras - at the cost of a little bit of raw performance power
  • Premium looking build, and aesthetically done design - the Redmi Y2 looks like the love child of the Redmi Note 5 and the Redmi Note 5 Pro (although the build here is all-plastic)
  • Nice, modern 5.99-inch screen with a tall 18:9 aspect ratio
  • Also has 'Face Unlock' which works reasonably well, and there is very little delay between the phone recognising your face and unlocking (understandably, the only time it struggled was in dark-ish environments, but at these times, you can always go back to using the fingerprint sensor or the good old passcode)
  • MIUI has been vastly improved over time, and is not as heavy as the previous versions - it is also one of the most refined, aesthetic Android UIs
  • Powering the Redmi Y2 is the solid, capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset (same as the Redmi Note 5) - and it ensures good performance in all but the most demanding use cases
  • The USP of the Redmi Y2 is of course the very good, AI-infused selfie camera, that also does Portrait mode - the results come out very good, especially in good lighting conditions
  • The rear dual-camera setup (12-megapixel+5-megapixel), which too is AI-driven, is pretty decent too in good lighting conditions - in portrait mode, the camera is able to click photos with just the right amount of blurring
  • Very good audio quality and speaker loudness
  • Good battery life - during regular use, the battery is good enough to sail through the day on a single charge
  • Decent charging speed (though there is no fast charging) - the battery can be charged from zero to 100 percent at a shade under two hours
  • On the whole, if you like clicking a lot of selfies, and sharing them on social media, the Redmi Y2 is the perfect smartphone in the budget range - you can think of it as a device with the camera of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the performance and efficiency of the Redmi Note 5, and the build and affordability of the lower end of the Redmi range - it is a worthy alternative especially to the Redmi Note 5 (the Redmi Note 5 has better battery life, and better screen resolution, but the Redmi Y2 has the better camera)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The Funtouch Android UI continues to come pre-installed with about six or seven bloatware apps - which could have been avoided
  • While the performance is good in regular use, the Snapdragon 626 chipset inside is not the best of the pack in this price bracket
  • Doesn't support the modern USB-C port
  • The display is good, but its resolution could have been higher
