2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Very good, premium design, with top-notch metal construction
  • The overall form factor and weight remain quite ergonomic
  • Very good, balanced display - good responsiveness, brightness levels, and sunlight legibility
  • Runs clean, clutter-free and simple stock Android out of the box - and comes with the 'Android One series' update promise!
  • Strong, dependable performance, powered by a power-efficient Snapdragon 625 - running on stock Android eliminates some of the overheads on the processor and the phone presents a super smooth and lag free experience on general day-to-day things - it’s solid and will suffice for most except the most demanding of users
  • Good, solid dual-camera setup - Xiaomi’s stereo mode is its take on Apple’s “portrait mode”, and its task is to blur the background - the final effects are commendable most of the times - sometimes even better than much more expensive phones like the OnePlus 5 - making it easily the best dual camera system on a budget
  • Even in auto mode, the Mi A1 takes rich images with good levels of detail and colour saturation
  • There is also a very effective pro mode which even allows the user to individually choose between the wide angle camera and the telephoto lens - making for a very compelling camera package
  • Xiaomi also offers 2x optical zoom with this device - and the results are quite good
  • Video recording is decent too - it can shoot in 4k, and has time lapse and slow motion modes
  • The front 5-megapixel camera for selfies is decent too, though nothing exceptional
  • Good audio quality and volume via both headphones and the speaker
  • Good, dependable battery life - comfortably lasts a work day
  • Takes about 2 hours to charge fully - which is a decent charging speed
  • On the whole, if you are only concerned about performance and battery life, then the Redmi Note 4 may be a better choice, and if you care most about low light camera performance, then the Moto G5S Plus is at the top of the pack, but for an overall dependable phone with a dual camera setup, and stock Android experience, the Mi A1 is a brilliant choice
  • Decent design, similar to the Xiaomi Redmi 4 - good build quality too, though its based on plastic
  • Fairly light at 153g
  • Fast and conveniently located fingerprint scanner
  • Dedicated Dual SIM slots and microSD slot (as opposed to the Hybrid slot on the likes of the Redmi Note 4)
  • Decent 5.5 inch display with 2.5D curved Corning GorillaGlass for protection - colour reproduction is accurate and viewing angles are quite good - you can also tweak the display by changing the colour temperature and contrast to suit your taste
  • MIUI is one of the better Android skins offering plenty of themes/flexibility
  • Some of the added features include Dual Apps (which lets you create two instances of an app on the phone so you can have two instances of apps such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and others) and a "reading" mode
  • Reliable performance with proven hardware - provides a decent lag free experience throughout, the phone is quick to launch apps, and it can multitask with several apps running, without killing background processes - overall the performance is similar to the Redmi 4 which has pretty much the same hardware
  • The highlight of the Y1 are its 16-megapixel front-facing camera and diffused selfie flash, along with beauty modes - the front camera works pretty well - and is arguably the best selfie camera in this price bracket
  • The speaker on the right grill is pretty loud (though it is also easy to muffle when holding the phone in landscape mode)
  • If you're in the market specifically looking for a selfie-centric phone and you're on a tight budget, the Redmi Y1 makes for a pretty solid option
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The performance is solid and dependable but not the absolute best in this price bracket - that status belongs to the likes of the Redmi Note 4
  • The camera is quite good in daylight conditions, but falls behind in low light prowess compared to say the Moto G5 Plus or Samsung Galaxy J7 Max - low light photos can sometimes be blurry and they take considerable time to process
  • Battery life is again strong, but not the best in this price bracket - that is again a position that's held by Xiaomi's Redmi Note 4
  • Plastic based construction (versus the metal build for the Redmi 4, or the Redmi Note 4)
  • The rear camera is pretty average - while photos taken in daylight have decent amounts of detail and accurate colours, low light performance is poor - the output is grainy and you will need a steady hand to take usable photos
  • Battery life could be better - the phone will last the day with moderate use - but its closest cousin, the Redmi 4 performs much better with a higher capacity battery
  • On the whole, the biggest competition for the Redmi Y1 is Xiaomi's own Redmi 4 - both phones are priced similarly and have similar core hardware, but the Redmi 4 gets a much bigger battery in a more compact metal body, while the Redmi Y1 has a bigger screen and front flash - if you are selfie-obsessed, the Redmi Y1 might make sense, but for other users, the Redmi 4 might be a slightly better all-round device - and if you can go a little higher on the budget, the Redmi Note 4 is the gold standard
