2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Top-notch build quality
  • The polished all-metal back of the Redmi 4 makes this phone look more premium than its predecessor (and actually more similar to the more expensive Redmi Note 4)
  • Nice attention to detail overall - such as a protective ring around the camera lens
  • Compact, and quite usable with just one hand - fits well in the hand
  • Fingerprint sensor works well, and is conveniently located
  • Nice 5-inch HD (720x1280) IPS display with 2.5D curved-edge glass - bright, sharp, and with decent viewing angles
  • Xiaomi's MIUI skin is one of the more refined Android UIs - it is clean, polished, and has a bunch of added functionality - Dual Apps, Quick Ball, One-handed mode, Child Mode, Second Space
  • Decent overall performance - on par with those of other phones powered by the Snapdragon 430 series processor
  • Decent rear camera - a definite improvement over the Redmi 3S - is quick at focusing, and images are fairly detailed and sharp
  • Video recording at 720p and 1080p is decent too
  • Decent front camera - pictures taken in good light have a good amount of detail and decent colour tone
  • Decent call quality
  • Good audio quality
  • Good video playback performance
  • Excellent battery life - with moderate use, lasts up to 2 days - there are also power saving modes to help squeeze more life out of each charge
  • Decent design and build, pretty much in the style that has been pioneered by Xiaomi
  • Nice, tall 5.7 inches 18:9 display with minimal bezels, and a pretty compact form factor
  • Fast fingerprint scanner
  • MIUI is one of the better Android UIs around
  • Very good performance, backed by the capable Snapdragon 450, that can be considered almost on par with the current-generation Snapdragon 600-series options - on the whole, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 matches up well with devices that usually cost a fair bit more - this is visible even in practical use of the phone - it’s smooth, easy to use and performs well in most situations
  • Decent (though not great) rear and front cameras - you will get decent shots in good light - brightness, composure and sharpness are all reasonable
  • Very good battery life - thanks to MIUI 9’s frugal power consumption and the capabilities of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC, you can expect to get well over a day of battery life on a single charge
  • On the whole, with very capable specifications at a very reasonable price, the Redmi 5 promises a lot for not much money, and it's main competition will likely come from its own, slightly more expensive cousins from the Redmi Note 5 series
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Camera performance is improved, but ordinary low-light shots and slow processing in HDR mode still leave something to be desired
  • The display is nice but not quite as sharp as the one on the Redmi Note 5
  • While the bezels are slim, they are more than what you’d typically expect from a modern tall-screen phone
  • The cameras are decent in good light, but in low light and even relatively weaker lighting conditions, pictures definitely lose competence
