Our Opinion

The realme 2 (3GB RAM, 32GB) is a slightly better phone than the Xiaomi Redmi 5 (3GB RAM, 32GB), and is also significantly better value for money. What should you buy? Go for the realme 2 (3GB RAM, 32GB)!

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Decent design and build, pretty much in the style that has been pioneered by Xiaomi
  • Nice, tall 5.7 inches 18:9 display with minimal bezels, and a pretty compact form factor
  • Fast fingerprint scanner
  • MIUI is one of the better Android UIs around
  • Very good performance, backed by the capable Snapdragon 450, that can be considered almost on par with the current-generation Snapdragon 600-series options - on the whole, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 matches up well with devices that usually cost a fair bit more - this is visible even in practical use of the phone - it’s smooth, easy to use and performs well in most situations
  • Decent (though not great) rear and front cameras - you will get decent shots in good light - brightness, composure and sharpness are all reasonable
  • Very good battery life - thanks to MIUI 9’s frugal power consumption and the capabilities of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 SoC, you can expect to get well over a day of battery life on a single charge
  • On the whole, with very capable specifications at a very reasonable price, the Redmi 5 promises a lot for not much money, and it's main competition will likely come from its own, slightly more expensive cousins from the Redmi Note 5 series
  • Stunning, unique design, carrying on the design language of the Realme 1 - the first thing you notice about this device is the back panel - it is made of fibreglass body with a Diamond-like finish at the back, which reflects light in attractive ways - continues to be one of the best-looking devices you will find in the budget segment
  • The rounded edges provide good grip
  • Now includes a fingerprint sensor, which was missing in the Realme 1
  • The display is now a slightly larger 'notch' panel - it provides an immersive experience, decent colours, and wide viewing angles
  • ColorOS UI adds some useful features like an AI board (which can be accessed by swiping left on the Home and shows stuff like steps count, photos, favourite contacts, travel tickets), smart driving mode, app cloning, privacy password, and tons of customisation options - though, having said that, it can get somewhat cluttered too in areas such as the Settings panel, and is not quite as simple as stock Android
  • Decent dual-camera setup - does reasonably well in good lighting conditions (similar to the Realme 1) and can also additionally give some decent bokeh shots thanks to the secondary camera
  • Decent selfie camera too in daylight, again very similar in quality to the Realme 1 selfie camera
  • Excellent battery life - the combination of a 4230mAh battery, and AI battery management means that the phone can comfortably last the day even with heavy use - and go up to 2 days with light to moderate use
  • On the whole, the Realme 2 is another very good phone in the Realme series, with a beautiful design, and is essentially an alternative to the Realme 1 (as opposed to a successor) - it gains over the Realme 1 in terms of a slightly larger 'notch' display with Gorilla Glass protection, and better battery life - and lags behind it in terms of display resolution, and speed/performance - which one you prefer might be down to what you value more
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • While the bezels are slim, they are more than what you’d typically expect from a modern tall-screen phone
  • The display is nice but not quite as sharp as the one on the Redmi Note 5
  • The cameras are decent in good light, but in low light and even relatively weaker lighting conditions, pictures definitely lose competence
  • The back panel is prone to scratches and fingerprints (you will probably want to use the included case)
  • While the display is slightly larger, the resolution is actually a degrade over the Realme 1
  • At the same time, the display is also reflective and not the most bright, which means sunlight legibility is not the best
  • While the phone works perfectly fine as a daily driver, it's performance is definitely not the best in class owing to its Snapdragon 450 internals
  • No fast charging support
