2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 20+ Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Premium, sleek, aesthetic design - metal frame with nice chamfered edges
  • The faux-leather back is also an interesting choice - it gives the phone a distinct look and feel, and the texture also offers a better grip when holding the smartphone

Display

  • Nice and sharp 5.7 inch AMOLED display

Software

  • The TriCam system on Zenfone AR works really well in offering a good AR experience - the AR apps run smoothly without any hiccups - and there are a few preloaded ones, as well as a few more that can be downloaded - from apps that allow you to explore cars, to ones that allow you to simulate everything from furniture to dinosaurs in your surroundings - even the limited selection of apps currently is fun to play around with
  • The ASUS UI, while neat, continued to come with a huge collection of bloatware apps, that can get annoying (you can disable them, but not uninstall them)
  • The implementation of Project Tango and Daydream is very good, but as on date, there are only a few apps that support the technologies - although as we see more devices supporting AR/VR, this is likely to change

Performance

  • Performance is top drawer, with the excellent Snapdragon 821 chipset behind the scenes - that along with 8GB of RAM ensures flawless, future-proof performance
  • The back of the device does get considerably warm after using the AR/VR platforms for over 15 minutes at a stretch

Camera

  • Very good rear camera - photos captured in all lighting conditions look great - it may not be as great as the Galaxy S8, HTC U11 or the Pixels, but it is not far behind
  • The front camera too is very capable, and selfies look detailed with accurate skin tones
  • The front camera also has a Live beautification mode, earlier in the Zenfone Live - basically, you can apply a bit of blush, skin brightening and skin softening effects to your face to make you look better in live videos

Audio

  • Along with Augmented Reality, the Zenfone AR also comes with support for Google’s other ambitious project, Daydream (the very good Daydream View VR headset has to be purchased separately) - when coupled with the VR headset, the VR experience is really very good
  • Impressive audio quality

Battery

  • Good battery life - will comfortably last till the end of the working day
  • Support for fast-charging technology - can quickly charge the smartphone from 0-60 percent in about 40 minutes - and to 100% in less than an hour and a half
  • Although battery life is good in normal use, AR and VR tend to drain battery pretty quickly

More

  • Of course the key USP of the phone is support for both AR (via Google's Tango Project) and VR (via Google's Daydream Project) - making it the first device to support both
  • On the whole, the Asus Zenfone AR offers a glimpse into the future, with AR and VR embedded in smartphone experiences - and does an impressive job of it - if you’re looking for a good smartphone and want to have some fun with augmented reality and virtual reality, the Zenfone AR won’t disappoint you
