2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 1 Expert Review analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • Light-weight
  • Curved edges make it comfortable to hold
  • Performance is ok, but not the best - competitors like the Redmi 5 are much faster in general use - with the Eluga Ray 550, you will get lags off and on, and games will generally have a lot of frame drops - the phone also get warm after playing for long stretches, and experiences greater than usual battery drain

Display

  • The display's auto brightness is a bit too aggressive

Software

  • Since this is near-stock Android, many users will find it familiar (although the version is outdated)

Camera

  • Average rear and front cameras - there is significant shutter lag, which will sometimes result in ghosting - sharpness and detail levels are ordinary too - and low light performance is below average

Audio

  • The speaker is mounted on the back and is loud enough to enjoy content with - sound also did not get muffled when holding the phone in landscape mode
  • The bundled in-ear headphones are pretty low quality

Battery

  • Battery life is average too - the phone will struggle to last the day with moderate to heave use

More

  • Decent ‘Big View Display’ with the modern 18:9 aspect ratio
  • Dedicated microSD card slot and Dual SIM slots
  • On the whole, the Ray 550 has little going for it other than the 18:9 display in this very competitive price segment - you would be much better off with a Redmi 5 (in terms of both performance and battery), or the Redmi Note 5 if you can stretch your budget a bit
