What We Liked

  • Nice, well-built, polycarbonate body
  • Small and light, and therefore easy to use with just one hand
  • The rear panel of this phone has a matte finish and offers a good grip
  • Nice, vivid display with decent viewing angles, and sunlight legibility - also has a Reading mode which makes colours easier on the eyes
  • MIUI is one of the nicer, more refined Android UIs - and comes with useful add-on functionality - such as support for Indic languages, Dual Apps, Second Space, and Quick Ball shortcut button
  • Good, reliable overall performance - with no lags when multitasking, or streaming videos and movies - gaming performance is decent too
  • The camera app is easy to use, and most modes are accessible with just one tap
  • The Infrared emitter on the Redmi 4A works as a universal remote and lets you control various appliances at home and works well with a variety of set-top boxes and TVs
  • The loudspeaker on the handset is pretty decent and loud enough to fill a small room
  • Audio quality via earphones is decent too (earphones don't come bundled though)
  • Decent call quality
  • Good battery life - easily lasts for over a day with regular use
  • Decent charging speed too - takes less than two hours to charge fully

What We Didn't

  • The rear camera is decent for the price but definitely not the strongest point of the phone - in proper lighting conditions, it can deliver good photos and the colours are well-balanced - but overall details are lacking, low light performance is average, and video recording capability is pretty ordinary too
  • The selfie camera is again acceptable for the price, but in low-light conditions, it is slow and struggles to take decent pictures
  • The Redmi 4A is a pretty solid phone overall, and a good choice especially for entry-level phone buyers - but it's most tough competition actually comes from its sibling - the Redmi 3S - for just a little more, users can get a metal body, a better display, a better Snapdragon 430 processor, a slightly better camera, and more battery power
