2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Good design - the metal chassis covers the entire side and back panel, giving it a solid feel in the palm - the rounded edges feel good in the hand
  • The home button doubles up as the fingerprint sensor and is both fast and accurate
  • The 20-megapixel camera is for regular selfies, while the 6-megapixel camera is for wide-angle shots and can accommodate multiple people in a single frame
  • Light and handy - at 144g, it is one of the lightest 5.5-inch screen smartphone around
  • The overall performance is impressive especially for this price range - even in limited light, the photos look well lit and crisp enough
  • The stand-out feature of course is the dual cameras on the front - the Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie DC can bring your selfies to life like no other smartphone at this price point
  • To camera also packs many enhancements like a beauty mode, selfie panoramas, GIF animation, and a portrait mode for bokeh selfies
  • The rear camera is decent, but nothing exceptional - its good with color and macros, though not so much with landscape shots, or low-light shots
  • Decent battery life - the 3, 000mAh battery lasts a full work day with moderate use
  • Dedicated slots for Dual SIMs and memory card
  • Ample storage
  • Top-grade metal build, offering a significant improvement over the Moto G5 Plus - this is the best-looking Moto G phone to date, and the build quality is comparable to much more expensive phones
  • Accurate/fast fingerprint scanner in the bezel below the screen
  • Good, sharp, punchy display - color is very good, and viewing angles are great
  • The scanner can also be used to replace the on-screen soft keys - a left swipe is ‘back’, a right one brings up recent apps - a useful feature carried over from previous Moto G phones
  • Like other Moto phones, the Moto G5S Plus uses a virtually untouched version of Android rather than a custom interface - keeping things nice and simple
  • The simple but useful Moto add-ons remain of course, including the Moto Display (ambient display notifications), and added gesture support
  • Good all-round speed/performance - both for day-to-day use and gaming
  • Pretty good dual rear camera setup, allows for a reasonably good bokeh effect - dynamic range enhancement is excellent too
  • When compared to the dual camera setup of it's main competitor the Xiaomi Mi A1, it outperforms the Mi A1 in low light conditions (although in well lit conditions, the Mi A1 tends to be better) - in fact in low light photography, it is arguably the best budget camera phone out there
  • The front camera is decent too, and has a pretty effective flash
  • Decent speaker - its pretty loud and has the extra shot of lower-frequency power needed in a tiny speaker to avoid sounding reedy and harsh
  • Good battery life - lasts the work day even with heavy use
  • Fast charging support - gets you six hours’ use in 15 minutes
  • Useful water repelling nano coating
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The screen is decent in terms of viewing angles, and sunlight legibility, but the resolution could certainly have been better
  • Asus's Zen UI is still one of the most cluttered/heavy Android UIs (ironic, given its name) - and this is definitely an area where Asus can improve
  • Performance is middling - the Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor is decent with basic tasks but starts to struggle when stressed - there are better performing phones in this price bracket
  • In terms of the competition at this price point, there are certainly devices with better performance, screen, and better UI available - the likes of Xiaomi Mi A1 for instance - so the Zenfone 4 Selfie DC only starts to make sense if you value a good selfie camera above all else
  • And, if you can raise your budget a bit, then the Honor 9i is a good option offering both a good selfie camera, and an overall better package
  • A somewhat large camera shutter lag is the one flaw in an otherwise good camera
  • Tends to get a little warm when charging
  • The choice of a micro USB slot, instead of a USB-C one, is a little bit old-school
