2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Premium, aesthetic metal finish design
  • Feels good to hold in hand - the rounded-off edges allow it to sit comfortably in the hand and offers plenty of grip
  • The fingerprint sensor on the front of the device works well
  • 2.5D curved glass display is nicely integrated into the shell of the phone, has vivid colours, good viewing angles, and comes protected with Gorilla Glass 3
  • Amigo UI offers a decent experience, and is pretty intuitive (although it could do with less bloat)
  • Armed with 2GHz octa-core P10 Helios processor and 4GB RAM, the phone runs smoothly whatever you throw at it - be it movies, games or browsing
  • The main USP of the Gionee A1 is its front 16-megapixel camera that offers a great selfie clicking experience, and comes with a front flash feature that makes taking selfies in dimly lit areas easy - the images captured have rich colour tones with an appreciable amount of detailing - offers strong competition to higher priced selfie smartphones from the likes of Oppo and Vivo
  • Decent rear camera - the shots captured have bright colours, fine details and delivered good depth of field when clicking in bright-light conditions - though it fails to impress in low-light
  • The 4, 010 mAh battery on the Gionee A1 is also very good and offers a good day-and-a-half backup in moderate to heavy usage
  • Decent charging speed - takes about 2 hours to charge the battery to 100%
  • Nice, aluminium based construction
  • Gionee's Amigo UI over Android has some useful add-ons like the 'private space', 'parallel apps' (allows you to have WhatsApp etc with multiple accounts on the phone), blue-light manager, and Smart gestures
  • The Qualcomm Snapdragon 435, coupled with 4GB RAM, is good in daily use/multi-tasking
  • Decent rear camera in daylight
  • The 3D photo feature of the aluminum-body M7 power stands out as one of the key highlights - go around an object to form a three-dimensional (3D) dynamic picture and the "live photo" feature shows the object with multiple angles with deeper detail - turn the phone or slide screen to enjoy the 3D image
  • Excellent battery life with a massive 5, 000mAh battery
  • Nice, trendy "FullView Display", complemented with Gorilla Glass 3 - offers a good experience while watching videos, playing games or reading
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The display's sunlight legibility could have been better
  • Tends to heat up a bit when put under stress
  • A little bit on the heavy side
  • Low resolution display
  • Amigo UI is decent but not the most polished (like Xiaomi phones) or light (like Moto phones)
  • While performance is ok in day-to-day use, most phones in this price bracket offer much better processors/performance, and this is an area where the M7 power definitely loses out
  • Average front camera which often produces grainy photos in less than ideal light
  • Average rear camera too, when it comes to low-light photography
