2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Premium, aesthetic metal finish design
  • Feels good to hold in hand - the rounded-off edges allow it to sit comfortably in the hand and offers plenty of grip
  • The fingerprint sensor on the front of the device works well
  • 2.5D curved glass display is nicely integrated into the shell of the phone, has vivid colours, good viewing angles, and comes protected with Gorilla Glass 3
  • Amigo UI offers a decent experience, and is pretty intuitive (although it could do with less bloat)
  • Armed with 2GHz octa-core P10 Helios processor and 4GB RAM, the phone runs smoothly whatever you throw at it - be it movies, games or browsing
  • The main USP of the Gionee A1 is its front 16-megapixel camera that offers a great selfie clicking experience, and comes with a front flash feature that makes taking selfies in dimly lit areas easy - the images captured have rich colour tones with an appreciable amount of detailing - offers strong competition to higher priced selfie smartphones from the likes of Oppo and Vivo
  • Decent rear camera - the shots captured have bright colours, fine details and delivered good depth of field when clicking in bright-light conditions - though it fails to impress in low-light
  • The 4, 010 mAh battery on the Gionee A1 is also very good and offers a good day-and-a-half backup in moderate to heavy usage
  • Decent charging speed - takes about 2 hours to charge the battery to 100%
  • Looks stunning, with an beautiful glass-based build - making it stand out amongst the competition in this price range - an elegant and modern design, executed almost perfectly
  • The phone is also slim, compact, and pocketable - which, amongst a sea of mammoth phablets, is again a design choice that a lot of people will appreciate
  • Decent face unlock functionality - one of the cheapest devices right now to boast the same!
  • Very good edge-to-edge 5.65-inch full-HD+ screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio, and with good sharpness, and brightness levels, making it one of the best displays in this price bracket
  • EMUI is pretty decent and has some nice add-ons to standard Android functionality, like split screen notifications, and dynamic fonts
  • Good day-to-day performance backed by the solid Kirin 659 SoC (it's on par with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC)
  • Dual camera setups on both the rear and front sides make for some good bokeh shots
  • Decent 3, 000mAh battery under the hood - the phone will get through the day on a single charge (having said that, there are better battery life phones in this price bracket)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The display's sunlight legibility could have been better
  • Tends to heat up a bit when put under stress
  • A little bit on the heavy side
  • The glass based design means that if you drop it, you can do some damage to the device, so using a case would be a good idea
  • The EMUI interface is now cleaner than before, but still not as simple and no-nonsense as stock Android
  • While the cameras are good with bokeh shots, standard photography is average and could have had better detail, brightness and composure - in roughly this price range, you’ll get better photography from the slightly more expensive Xiaomi Mi A1, which uses its dual-camera setup more effectively and delivers on everyday photography better
  • Takes a little over two hours to charge using the bundled 10W charger - fast charging support would have been a nice-to-have
  • On the whole, while it's a good phone, this is a very competitive price range - the Xiaomi Mi A1, Moto G5S Plus and Huawei’s own Honor 7X will give the phone a tough fight - while Honor 9 Lite is arguably the best looking of all, it is not the most powerful of the lot, and the cameras, while decent, are not class leading
