2-minute Review [Positives]
  • High quality design, fit, and finish
  • The back plate tapers along the edges and corners, resulting in a far more comfortable in-hand feel
  • Very fast and accurate fingerprint reader, at par with what is found with most high-end flagship smartphones
  • Decent display, with good color accuracy and viewing angles
  • Apart from unlocking the device, the fingerprint scanner can also be used to capture photos and videos, answer phone calls, stop alarms, bring down the notification shade by swiping down, and browse through photos in the gallery by swiping left or right, which are all useful features to have - these are the kind of small touches that make the phone much easier to use with one hand
  • Very good performance at this price point - everything is as fluid and responsive in everyday use, and the device also handles graphically-intensive gaming with little issue
  • Decent dual camera setup - the first phone in this price range to come with a dual-camera setup, allowing for a nice bokeh effect in pictures
  • The overall camera experience is pretty good too - it is fast to focus and capture photos, and the photos are pleasant
  • Good loudspeaker
  • Decent overall audio quality
  • Very good battery life, helped by a well optimized processor - you get as much as 1.5 days of battery life with moderate use
  • The first Moto G series phone to have a metal body - looks quite handsome, and is a big step-up over its predecessors
  • Excellent build quality
  • Nice chrome accents on the front and rear add to the looks
  • Quick fingerprint sensor
  • The power and volume buttons on the right are located comfortably for single-hand operation
  • The phone's rounded edges and corners make it comfortable to hold and use
  • One-button Nav allows you to tap or swipe the fingerprint sensor instead of reaching for the Android navigation buttons - it works great, and can be pretty handy
  • Decent display, with good viewing angles (sunlight legibility could have been better though)
  • Runs close-to-stock Android UI out-of-the-box, which keeps things nice and simple
  • The added touches from Moto like Moto Display, and gestures are all pretty useful
  • Good, consistent performance all round - handles multi-tasking with ease, and apps launch quickly - games are handled well too, with no stuttering - benchmarks scores are pretty good, though a step behind the Redmi Note 4, which is the top performer in this price bracket
  • Good rear camera - improved even compared to its already good predecessor - captures good results in all sorts of situations - and has quick focusing - in daylight landscapes looked detailed, with punchy colours - the professional mode is good too - overall, this is arguably the best camera among the budget phones, though low light performance could still be better
  • The front camera is good too, with its colour accuracy, as long as there is adequate light
  • Supports 4K video recording
  • Decent call quality
  • Good battery life - in real world tests, the phone easily lasts the day with moderate use (though it lacks the stellar battery performance of some of its peers like the Redmi Note 4)
  • Excellent TurboPower charging functionality - a 20-minute charge gets you up to nearly 50 percent
  • Water-repellent nanocoating is a nice add-on
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • EMUI is bright and colorful, but somewhat cartoonish (although it can be easily replaced with a custom launcher)
  • The single bottom-mounted speaker is good but is easy to muffle with your hand when using the phone in the landscape orientation
  • No LED notification indicator - the Moto Display feature somewhat compensates for this, but isn't as useful all the time
  • Tends to heat up when being used for navigation for an extended time
  • The bundled headphones are average
  • Loudspeaker quality is average too
