Our Opinion

The LG V20 is a significantly better phone, but the LG G5 is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much you want to spend! But from a pure value perspective, we recommend the LG V20.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Very good build and handling
  • Unique modular design, with a "magic slot" which lets you plug a handful of external add-ons: such as a semi-pro camera grip with shutter buttons and a bigger battery, or an external sound amplifier by B&O (there will be more 3rd party add-ons available in future)
  • Fingerprint sensor is fast and accurate
  • Excellent display with excellent contrast and sunlight legibility
  • Android UI with Optimus UX is a powerful combo, and LG has done well to keep the bloatware in check, but left enough in terms of customization options and proprietary services to enhance your Android experience
  • The Snapdragon 820 chipset offers stellar, top-of-the-line performance, and runs cool
  • Fantastic set of rear and front cameras
  • The photos from the rear (primary) camera have plenty of resolved detail, high dynamic range, excellent colors and contrast
  • The wide-angle camera allows instant panoramic shots and opens up the door for some nice creative usage
  • The 4K videos are great with plenty of detail
  • The OIS, and the digital stabilization, are good too
  • Good audio quality
  • Excellent call quality via earpiece and speaker
  • Battery life is decent (lasts a day) and the option to always have a spare ready to take over, from the magic slot, is most welcome
  • Fast charging support via USB-C
  • Excellent build quality - one of the best phones LG has ever made in this regard - built for durability and longevity
  • Bright, attractive, flagship-level screen
  • Unique (and useful) "secondary screen" functionality, that can be customized to your needs - serving notifications when the phone is in standby, and listing recent apps/favorite apps/most common contacts etc, when the phone is active
  • LG's highly customizable UI over Android is fairly pleasant to use
  • The performance with the Snapdragon 820 chipset shines, even compared against other S820-powered phones - the phone is fast and fluid throughout
  • Dual-FoV cameras on the front and back are very good with excellent microphones and Qualcomm's EIS image stabilization
  • Having a wide-angle view in addition to the normal camera FoV for both the main camera and the selfie cam is fun leaving room for lots of experimentation in creative framing
  • The extensive manual controls offered by the V20 for both photos and video taking are matched by none other (not even Lumias)
  • The V20 loudspeaker is among the loudest on a phone, and the sound quality is excellent
  • The sound quality is excellent via headphones too
  • Very good call quality
  • Decent battery life - though lower than what the best phablets offer
  • Quick charging support and a replaceable battery
  • Transit drop compliant / shockproof
  • On the whole, the LG V20 is more a niche audience device, than a mainstream device - it is built for power users, camera fanatics, audio enthusiasts, and content creators - they’re the ones who would appreciate the full package of features that the V20 has to offer
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The design lacks originality or character, which is a bit of a downer, given that this is a flagship phone
  • No wireless charging support
  • No water proofing
  • The phone is really well built, but it is not the prettiest, or most elegant phone out there - the focus is more on durability than aesthetics - so it doesn't look as premium as its price
  • Misses out on water resistance that is present in some other flagships
  • Not particularly easy to use with one hand
  • The phone has bit of a tendency to heat up when put under stress
  • Although manual video controls and Hi-Fi sound recording are great for photography pros/enthusiasts, the average user might find them a bit of an overkill for a phone
