Our Opinion

The LG G6 is a much better phone, but the LG Q6 is significantly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Probably the LG G6, if your budget allows for it.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Excellent glass/metal build, premium look and feel, aesthetic design
  • Water and dust protection, and a lot of attention to durability
  • Putting the G6 up next to other 5.7-inch phones, LG's ability to squeeze that much screen real estate onto this small a handset is nothing short of impressive - that it can go head-to-head with the smaller-screened iPhone 7 Plus and make that sleek, sophisticated handset seem chunky and bloated by comparison is real accomplishment for the company
  • Beautiful 9:18 display, is a welcome evolution to smartphone displays
  • Because of the negligible bezels, feels like the entire thing is one big screen
  • The user interface is nice and typical LG with heavy use of colors from the entire spectrum
  • Powered by the solid Snapdragon 821, the performance is top-drawer, and on par with the other Snapdragon 820/821 competition (although some other flagships this year will be launching with the even more powerful Snapdragon 835)
  • Very good rear camera with a dual camera setup - the photos are detailed and with pleasing rich colors - the coverage of the wide-angle cam makes pretty much any scene look dramatic - works well in both daylight and low light
  • 4K video is super sharp too with lots of fine detail, and video stabilization works well
  • The selfie camera is decent too, with decent details
  • Decent loudspeaker
  • Good audio quality via earphones
  • Good battery life - easily lasts a day (though its not as great as some of the other flagship competition)
  • Well built, and feel quite sturdy in hand
  • Beautiful design - arguably the best looking device in the sub Rs 20k price category - in fact looks like a miniaturised version of LG's premium flagship G6 - the metal side rails, along with the glossy plastic back give the phone an upmarket look
  • The edges are metallic and rounded, which makes the phone easier to grip - it is also well weighted and very ergonomic for the screen size it offers
  • Has the same Full Vision display that's found in the LG G6, that will make it a conversation starter every time you take it out of your pocket - essentially, the display is a little taller than the standard 1080p resolution - it has a 2160 x 1080p resolution, which takes the aspect ratio from the standard 16:9 to 18:9 - in tandem, the top and bottom bezels have been drastically minimised, which adds to the phone’s unique look - moreover, the Full Vision display not only makes the phone look good, but makes the whole footprint smaller - this means, the LG Q6 with its 5.5-inch display, is just a hair bigger than say the 5-inch Lenovo Z2 Plus
  • As for the display quality, it is pretty good too, and one of the best in the category - viewing angles are very good, it is easily viewable outdoors and under direct sunlight, and with luminance readings of 605 lux, offers ample brightness as well - the display also has Gorilla Glass 3 protection on top for scratch protection and the touch response is quite good too
  • LG's UI is decent in terms of aesthetics and functionality
  • Decent rear camera - images have ample details and sharpness
  • The 1080p video recording is sharp and detailed, with good colors and excellent audio
  • Decent call quality
  • Decent battery life - lasts a day with moderate use
  • Decent (though not exceptional) charging speed - 0 to 100 in a little over 2 hours
  • On the whole, the Q6 is a good option for more casual users, who put more stock in design than internal hardware specs - but for users looking for more heavy-use apps/games, better performers like the Moto G5 Plus, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Honor 6X, Samsung Galaxy On Max etc will make more sense - all these smartphones offer better gaming performance (although day-to-day performance is pretty much same)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Software and media still catching up to this new 18:9 world, so you won't find a lot of media content right now that can make full use of the elongated display (for web browsing and multi-tasking though, the extra screen real estate works just great)
  • While the G6 is a pretty great phone in isolation, and in terms of value-for-money, but in terms of pure performance/quality, it doesn't quite match up when compared to what will probably be considered it's top competition among flagships - the Galaxy S8 - which is more elegant, more refined in design, better built, offers better performance, a better camera, a better display, high-quality headphones, and better battery life (although of course it is also more expensive)
  • No fingerprint scanner
  • The plastic back tends to scratch easily (so you will want to use a case)
  • No notification LED
  • The UI is decent but LG does include a lot of duplicate apps for pre-built Android functionality - all this bloatware could have been avoided
  • Although day-to-day performance is decent, performance with processor-intensive apps/games is definitely behind the competition
  • The camera app is pretty bare bones apart from panorama and food mode, the phone doesn't really let you tweak settings further
  • Average front facing camera - both dynamic range, and detail level are lacking
  • The speaker is located on the back side which means it can easily get muffled if you place the phone on a table or couch, face up - it also tends to sound tinny at high volumes
  • The phone does come with a “face unlock” feature - but it is a little slow
  • Uses micro-USB port instead of the more modern USB-C standard
