2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Looks premium with a a high-gloss plastic back that looks like glass from afar - in fact from far away it can be easily confused for it's more expensive sibling the Moto G6
  • Decent fingerprint scanner in the rear
  • Modern, tall, 18:9 display with slimmer bezels - it's reasonably bright and vivid
  • In typical Moto fashion, the Moto E5 Plus run a clean, bloat-free version of Android, with minimal useful add-ons like Moto Display, Moto Actions, and Night Mode
  • Decent day-to-day performance - for light workloads, the phone will perform just fine
  • Decent rear camera in favorable lighting conditions, for the price bracket
  • Decent front camera in favorable lighting conditions, for the price bracket
  • Video recording is decent too with reasonably good stabilisation
  • Call quality is pretty good too
  • Excellent battery life - with a 5000mAh battery, the E5 Plus is a road warrior, and can last you up to 2 days with moderate use, before you need to charge it again
  • Fast charging support (TurboCharge) - the phone gets from 0 to 50% in about an hour
  • The first Moto G series phone to have a metal body - looks quite handsome, and is a big step-up over its predecessors
  • Excellent build quality
  • Nice chrome accents on the front and rear add to the looks
  • Quick fingerprint sensor
  • The power and volume buttons on the right are located comfortably for single-hand operation
  • The phone's rounded edges and corners make it comfortable to hold and use
  • One-button Nav allows you to tap or swipe the fingerprint sensor instead of reaching for the Android navigation buttons - it works great, and can be pretty handy
  • Decent display, with good viewing angles (sunlight legibility could have been better though)
  • Runs close-to-stock Android UI out-of-the-box, which keeps things nice and simple
  • The added touches from Moto like Moto Display, and gestures are all pretty useful
  • Good, consistent performance all round - handles multi-tasking with ease, and apps launch quickly - games are handled well too, with no stuttering - benchmarks scores are pretty good, though a step behind the Redmi Note 4, which is the top performer in this price bracket
  • Good rear camera - improved even compared to its already good predecessor - captures good results in all sorts of situations - and has quick focusing - in daylight landscapes looked detailed, with punchy colours - the professional mode is good too - overall, this is arguably the best camera among the budget phones, though low light performance could still be better
  • The front camera is good too, with its colour accuracy, as long as there is adequate light
  • Supports 4K video recording
  • Decent call quality
  • Good battery life - in real world tests, the phone easily lasts the day with moderate use (though it lacks the stellar battery performance of some of its peers like the Redmi Note 4)
  • Excellent TurboPower charging functionality - a 20-minute charge gets you up to nearly 50 percent
  • Water-repellent nanocoating is a nice add-on
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Weighing in at 197g and with large dimensions, the Moto E5 Plus is quite a bulky phone, and can be unwieldy - it is too wide and tall to be used comfortably with one hand
  • The plastic back gets scratched very easily and is a fingerprint magnet - it is also very slippery - so using a case is a good idea
  • The display resolution is on the low side
  • Performance is alright in daily use, but there are certainly significantly better performing phones around in this price bracket
  • Average loudspeaker - both loudness and audio quality could have been a bit better
  • The Moto E5 Plus is a decent phone by itself, and is a especially good choice if you value battery life above all else, but other devices from Xiaomi, Asus, Realme in this price bracket will likely be better overall deals
  • No LED notification indicator - the Moto Display feature somewhat compensates for this, but isn't as useful all the time
  • Tends to heat up when being used for navigation for an extended time
  • The bundled headphones are average
  • Loudspeaker quality is average too
