2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Solid build quality
  • Beautiful metal-and-glass design
  • Very good, speedy fingerprint sensor
  • Beautiful, bright AMOLED display, with wide viewing angles and punchy colors
  • Mostly stock Android UI, which will appease the Android purists
  • Good speed/performance in daily use
  • Compatible with all existing Moto Mods (battery life extender, projector, camera mods etc)
  • Good rear camera that captures detailed images, especially in good lighting conditions
  • Good front-facing camera too - produces a pleasant level of sharpness to accompany its solid details capture
  • Good call quality
  • Good audio quality
  • Good speaker loudness
  • Outstanding battery life - comfortably one of the best in the business
  • Turbo charging support (full recharge time of about 110 minutes)
  • Water-repellent nano-coating on the phone's surface
  • Excellent implementation of the modular accessory system, just like its bigger brothers - the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force - which makes this phone truly versatile and offers an affordable entry point into the Moto Mods ecosystem
  • When it comes to expanding the functionality beyond what a traditional smartphone is capable of doing, no other system or implementation does it better than Moto Mods!
  • On the whole, even without any Mods, the Moto Z Play is a complete package and offers good value - the mods are the icing on the cake
  • Beautifully made, well-designed, slim and light (although might look a little a bit too futuristic for some, with exposed connection pins on the rear, when used without any mods)
  • Great fingerprint scanner with gesture controls
  • Beautiful, sharp display
  • Motorola's software sticks to stock, simple Android - but still adds useful software tricks - such as "show me" voice commands, Moto Display, and Moto Actions
  • Good speed/performance - though the chipset is not cutting-edge for this price bracket - but everything runs flawlessly in real-life use
  • Pretty good rear camera quality - generally takes bright, colorful, detailed photos - low-light performance is pretty good too
  • Decent front camera too
  • Very good audio quality via both headphones and speaker
  • Very good battery life - you should be able to easily go a day and a half or even two days with some heavy use - and of course battery life can be made even more incredible with a relevant battery Mod
  • The key USP here of course is the magnetic mod add-ons that you can snap onto the back of any Moto Z-family phone - some of the cool ones are the TurboPower Pack charger, Wireless Charging Style Shell, and JBL SoundBoost 2 speaker - they work with minimal fuss and can be genuinely useful ways of enhancing your phone's functionality
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Gaming performance is not the best in class
  • Camera has longer exposure times when shooting photos under low light
  • Slightly unwieldy
  • The phone feels a bit wide and uncomfortable without a magnetic back cover (mod)
  • The power button and volume rockers are a bit too small
  • Performance is good, but there are phones in this price bracket with better chipsets
  • Camera is again pretty good, but falls behind the best camera devices in this price bracket - the Honor 8 Pro, and the OnePlus 5
