2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Clean, no-nonsense, stylish design - it fits with what Nokia stands for
- Build quality is top-notch too
- Pocket-friendly size and footprint
- Beautiful display - one of the best IPS LCDs available - 700+ nits of brightness, deep blacks, excellent contrast, and AMOLED-like sunlight legibility - it's even better than the iPhone 7/7Plus's which are the benchmark for IPS displays
- Purists will enjoy the mostly stock Android UI (and the promise of regular updates)
- The Snapdragon 835 offers chart-topping performance, doesn't get hot, and combined with a lightweight operating system - the Nokia 8 zips through any task you throw at it
- The cameras on the Nokia 8 are pretty good too - they get almost everything right - the image quality from the rear dual camera setup is good, the specs are as relevant as they can get, and the extra features are trendy yet not over the top - color, monochrome, daylight, or nighttime
- Usually good Portrait shots and Bokeh effects too - you can even adjust the effect's strength later on
- The Dual-Sight shots are nice too, and an interesting add-on
- The front camera is very good too, and among the best
- Video recording performance is good too, especially the audio part which is class-leading - any concert recorded with the 8 will be as compelling on video as on the venue itself
- With dual sight, you can also livestream on both cameras, which maybe a dream come true for many vloggers and avid social network users
- Audio output quality via both headphone jack, and speakers is good too
- Battery life is impressive too, and the phone will comfortably last the day even with heavy use
- Fast-charging support
- On the whole, the Nokia 8 is a revelation - HMD did the iconic brand justice by delivering on all promises - No rush to make up for the lost time - the Nokia 8 is methodical and confident, patient and prepared - and its packs a strong punch

- Top-notch build quality, with the ergonomics, handling, and aesthetics of a true high-end premium device
- Good AMOLED display with great color rendition, and an excellent in-built Kindle-like "reading mode"
- OxygenOS continues to be an excellent blend of stock Android and light but useful touches in all the right places - it is, without doubt, one of the best Android UIs around
- Performance is blazing fast all round - matching and sometimes even beating other Snapdragon 835 powerhouses like the Galaxy S8 and Sony Xperia XZ Premium - and not just in benchmarks, but in real-life use
- The 8GB of included RAM is simply astounding, and unmatched by any other phone till date - making the phone as future-proof as is possible - although any differences in real-life performance relative to the 6GB version may be hard to notice at present
- Very good dual camera setup - giving arguably the best camera phone in this price bracket - overall it's pleasing color rendering and good dynamic range - the portrait mode is pretty nice too - overall the camera is fast and reliable
- Videos shot are also pretty decent (although it misses out on video stabilisation, which was present in the OnePlus 3/3T)
- Good loudspeaker - improving significantly over the OnePlus 3/3T
- Very solid battery life - offering a significant improvement over the already very good OnePlus 3T in real life use
- OnePlus's proprietary dash charging technology continues to provide industry leading fast charging speeds
- On the whole, leaving aside the camera, which is good but not comparable to the best in business, the OP5 matches other premium flagships in all other areas - and delivers this at a fraction of the price - continuing OnePlus's tradition of offering great performance at excellent value for money
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- Although its a solid all-rounder, the Nokia 8 lacks some cutting-edge features from high-end flagships in 2017 - like waterproofing or a bezel-less design
- The cameras are good, but can sometimes be slow, and could also have been better in low light - Nokia 8's top competitor, the OnePlus 5 generally comes out a little ahead in the camera department
- 4K videos could have been sharper and better stabilized
|
- The design is aesthetic but nothing original, or distinctive
- The phone's display is pretty good but doesn't pack the same punch as the (admittedly higher priced) premium Android flagships
- The camera is again excellent for the price, and an improvement over the OnePlus 3/3T, but doesn't match up to the level of the premium flagships like the Galaxy S8, the Google Pixel, the HTC U11, and iPhone 7 & 7 Plus
