Our Opinion

The Vivo X21 is a much better phone, but the realme 1 (6GB RAM, 128GB) is significantly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Probably the Vivo X21, if your budget allows for it.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Refined, understated design - the phone is sleek and features an all-black aluminum frame and a glass back with tapered edges, which make it very comfortable to hold
  • Surprisingly easy to handle, especially considering the 6.28-inch screen - the tall 19:9 aspect ratio helps a lot, and it also gives the front of the phone that modern bezel-less look everyone craves these days
  • Fans of minimalism will enjoy the Vivo X21 too - with the fingerprint sensor hidden under the screen, the back of the phone is very clean
  • The key USP of the phone, however, is the world's first under-display fingerprint sensor - the sensor works well most of the time, although it can be buggy now and then
  • In case you are not into that, you can also opt for the infrared-based facial recognition, which is fast and accurate, and pleasantly works in all kinds of lighting conditions
  • The Vivo X21’s display is otherwise beautiful too with the characteristic vibrant color palette and inky blacks of an OLED display - it has excellent brightness levels, and outdoor visibility too
  • The Vivo X21 also features an always-on display that looks pretty similar to Samsung’s implementation, with a clock and other notifications on screen
  • Good speed/performance backed by the solid Snapdragon 660 processor and an ample 6GB of RAM - mostly, in actual use, you will be hard pressed to see any differences in performance even compared to the top-end Android flagships like the Pixel 2 or the Galaxy S9
  • Decent dual camera setup at the back - does well especially in good lighting conditions, and with bokeh effects - it's not quite to the level of the Pixel 2 or the Galaxy S9 - but for its price bracket, it does a decent job
  • The front 12MP camera is decent too, and can also do (software based) bokeh images
  • Good audio quality via headphones
  • The single bottom-firing speaker also gets pretty loud
  • Good battery life - will last the day with medium to heavy use
  • Fast charging support
  • Bold, stunning design thanks to the diamond-like reflective body - this is a device that certainly stands out - it is housed inside a fibre-glass casing that has been cut at different angles such that each section of the glass back turns to a different shade of black when light is reflecting off it!
  • Lightweight and well built
  • Decent, modern 18:9 display with minimal bezels - which means that despite the large screen size, the phone will fit nicely into your hand
  • Good all-round performance, similar to Snapdragon 636 phones, like the Redmi Note 5 Pro
  • Decent rear and front cameras - both the cameras support depth of field or Portrait effect, and Augmented Reality (AR) stickers
  • The rear camera pictures are reasonably crisp, and have decent color reproduction
  • The front camera relies heavily on Oppo’s AI algorithms to fine-tune the photos which results in good (if slightly artificial looking) photos
  • Overall, cameras are decent, but not quite up to the high benchmark of the Redmi Note 5 Pro
  • Good battery life - easily gives over a day’s usage for an average user
  • Dedicated dual SIM card slots and microSD slot
  • Supports VoLTE on both the dual sim slots
  • On the whole, the Realme 1 offers a very solid option in spite of being in a super competitive price segment having some great phones by the likes of Xiaomi and Asus - if an interesting design, fast performance and good battery life are your primary concerns, then it should definitely be towards the top of your shortlist
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • No water resistance - a feature thats now present in most phones in this price bracket
  • One area where the X21 loses out is the refinement of the UI - the OS which is basically a copy of the iOS, can often be un-intuitive, and sometimes buggy - the devil is in the details - and details are not very well done here
  • Uses the old microUSB standard, instead of the modern USB-C port
  • On the whole, the Vivo X21 is a good all-round phone, and has an innovative under-glass fingerprint sensor, but it's let down to some extent by its UI - everything considered, unless you are into the cutting edge fingerprint sensor tech, you are likely to find better overall value devices in this price segment, like the OnePlus 6, or the Honor 10
  • No fingerprint sensor, so you have to rely on the face unlock for quick unlocking (which does work quite well)
  • The display is decent on the whole, but outdoor visibility is pretty ordinary
  • Oppo's Color OS UI is not the most refined Android UI, and looks cluttered at places
  • No support for fast charging - the phones take a little over two hours to charge from zero to full
