2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Top-grade metal build, offering a significant improvement over the Moto G5 Plus - this is the best-looking Moto G phone to date, and the build quality is comparable to much more expensive phones
  • Useful water repelling nano coating
  • Accurate/fast fingerprint scanner in the bezel below the screen
  • The scanner can also be used to replace the on-screen soft keys - a left swipe is ‘back’, a right one brings up recent apps - a useful feature carried over from previous Moto G phones
  • Good, sharp, punchy display - color is very good, and viewing angles are great
  • Like other Moto phones, the Moto G5S Plus uses a virtually untouched version of Android rather than a custom interface - keeping things nice and simple
  • The simple but useful Moto add-ons remain of course, including the Moto Display (ambient display notifications), and added gesture support
  • Good all-round speed/performance - both for day-to-day use and gaming
  • Pretty good dual rear camera setup, allows for a reasonably good bokeh effect - dynamic range enhancement is excellent too
  • When compared to the dual camera setup of it's main competitor the Xiaomi Mi A1, it outperforms the Mi A1 in low light conditions (although in well lit conditions, the Mi A1 tends to be better) - in fact in low light photography, it is arguably the best budget camera phone out there
  • The front camera is decent too, and has a pretty effective flash
  • Decent speaker - its pretty loud and has the extra shot of lower-frequency power needed in a tiny speaker to avoid sounding reedy and harsh
  • Good battery life - lasts the work day even with heavy use
  • Fast charging support - gets you six hours’ use in 15 minutes
  • Beautifully made, well-designed, slim and light (although might look a little a bit too futuristic for some, with exposed connection pins on the rear, when used without any mods)
  • The key USP here of course is the magnetic mod add-ons that you can snap onto the back of any Moto Z-family phone - some of the cool ones are the TurboPower Pack charger, Wireless Charging Style Shell, and JBL SoundBoost 2 speaker - they work with minimal fuss and can be genuinely useful ways of enhancing your phone's functionality
  • Great fingerprint scanner with gesture controls
  • Beautiful, sharp display
  • Motorola's software sticks to stock, simple Android - but still adds useful software tricks - such as "show me" voice commands, Moto Display, and Moto Actions
  • Good speed/performance - though the chipset is not cutting-edge for this price bracket - but everything runs flawlessly in real-life use
  • Pretty good rear camera quality - generally takes bright, colorful, detailed photos - low-light performance is pretty good too
  • Decent front camera too
  • Very good audio quality via both headphones and speaker
  • Very good battery life - you should be able to easily go a day and a half or even two days with some heavy use - and of course battery life can be made even more incredible with a relevant battery Mod
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A somewhat large camera shutter lag is the one flaw in an otherwise good camera
  • The choice of a micro USB slot, instead of a USB-C one, is a little bit old-school
  • Tends to get a little warm when charging
  • The phone feels a bit wide and uncomfortable without a magnetic back cover (mod)
  • The power button and volume rockers are a bit too small
  • Performance is good, but there are phones in this price bracket with better chipsets
  • Camera is again pretty good, but falls behind the best camera devices in this price bracket - the Honor 8 Pro, and the OnePlus 5
