2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Good build quality
  • Simple, clean, compact, basic design
  • The highlight of the phone is that it's one of the first ones to run the Android Go edition of Android (8.1 Oreo at the time of launch) - the Go edition is a special version of Android tuned and tweaked to run well on low-end devices - there are also Go ('lite') versions of key apps like Gmail, Assistant, and Maps, that help save both data and storage space, and manage to run reasonably well on low end processors
  • Android Go also allows you to easily use your memory card as an extension of your internal storage - thus overcoming a serious limitation of low internal storage (8GB) that the phone would otherwise have
  • Can use both SIM cards and microSD card together
  • Good battery life - should see you through the whole day comfortably
  • The battery is also removable
  • Good looks with a solid build, plastic unibody design, and a compact feel
  • The gentle curves at the edges are a nice upgrade over the Redmi 4A which was more square-ish
  • Additionally, the company has taken user feedback and gone with a non-hybrid SIM tray design - there are separate slots for a microSD card and both SIMs, therefore not forcing users to have to forego one or the other
  • Good display for the price
  • MIUI continues to be one of the more well designed Android UIs - it's clean, efficient and has a number of useful add-on apps like Mi Drop, Mi Security (lets you set passcodes on individual apps, set up dual apps or a second space on the device, block SMS senders and more), and Mi Remote
  • Decent enough performance in daily use
  • Acceptable cameras given the price point - take good shots in good light, and single-tone LED flash at the back will help you get a little more visibility in low light conditions
  • Good battery life - with the low power usage of the Snapdragon 425 and the frugal HD screen, you can easily get a full day’s use out of the smartphone before needing to charge
  • Overall it's a decent upgrade over the Redmi 4A, and the small changes will help in keeping the phone current - and offer very good value to users looking for a nice entry-level smartphone
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Average display - it is small (4.5 inches), low resolution, will struggle in sunlight, and lacks any toughened glass
  • Average performance - the phones runs reasonably well only in basic use (simple email, messages, social media) - you can't ask too much of it - there are much better performing phones now available in this price bracket, from the likes of Xiaomi
  • Average rear and front cameras, with significant ghosting issues, shutter lag, and average overall image quality
  • The built-in speaker is screechy and lacks depth
  • As you would expect at the price point, the phone doesn’t support any kind of fast charging - charging from 10 to 100 percent takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes
  • On the whole, if you plan to use your phone for anything more than the most basic use, you are going to be much better served by increasing your budget a bit, and grabbing a budget Xiaomi, or Lenovo - the Nokia 1, even though being a pioneer with Android Go, doesn't really make the cut as a strong value for money device
  • Performance is only good for basic use - you will of course need better specs (and a more expensive phone) if you intend to use heavy apps, or play a lot of games
  • Multi-tasking is also average thanks to just 2GB of RAM
  • Additionally, 16GB of internal storage is likely to get limiting if you install a lot of apps
  • Camera quality is basic too - again as would be expected at this price point
  • No fast charging support
