2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Excellent build quality
  • Premium, handsome, elegant design - a little old-school but genuinely full of character
  • Water-proof
  • Brilliant, pixel-packed, class-leading 4K screen
  • Beautifully simple Xperia UI is a winner with a traditionally restrained approach to skinning Android - It's elegant, clean with added Sony goodies like Stamina mode and solid multimedia apps
  • Top-notch performance - Snapdragon 835 is Qualcomm's best, and the Xperia XZ Premium is among the most powerful smartphones today - the 1080p resolution when there is no native 4K content helps - and the phone runs cool even when you push it
  • Very good primary camera - one of the best, and comparable to other flagships - produces detailed photos, has improved corner sharpness, and very good colors, contrast, and dynamic range
  • The 960fps slow-mo HD video recording is pretty cool - but capturing the moment takes practice
  • The 13MP AF front facing camera is very good too - with plenty of detail, good dynamic range
  • Dedicated camera button comes in handy
  • Nice stereo loudspeakers
  • Solid battery life - easily lasts the day with regular use - although it lags behind the even better battery life of the Galaxy S8
  • On the whole, this is, by far, the best Sony flagship in years
  • Elegant, polished design - employs a single piece of metal bent over the internals - feels premium and classy
  • Dust and water resistant
  • Superb screen with a HDR support, which is a nice boost - even if its application is limited to Netflix and Amazon at this point
  • Nice, refined UI from Sony with a mostly stock Android experience with add-ons like Stamina-branded battery-saving modes, and Sony's own multimedia apps
  • Top-end performance backed by the Snapdragon 835 chipset - lives up to flagship expectations
  • Pretty good camera in most conditions - produces detailed photos, has improved corner sharpness, and very good colors, contrast, and dynamic range
  • 4K video look good, 1080p likewise - the 960fps slow-mo HD video recording holds a lot of potential and looks dramatic (but capturing the right moment takes a lot of precision and practice, since you only have about 0.2 seconds to work with)
  • The XZ1 borrows its great 13MP, f/2.0 autofocus selfie shooter from the XZ Premium as well - it produces shots with plenty of detail and good dynamic range
  • Decent set of stereo speakers
  • Decent audio quality via heaphones too
  • Decent battery life - lasts the day with moderate use
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • Prone to collecting smudges easily, if used without a case
  • Although it is aesthetically designed, but when you hold it up against its all-metal-and-glass rivals, the chunky bezels and plastic sides look a little old-school, and dated
  • As there’s still only a handful movies and shows at 4K resolution, most of the time you won't be making full use of the stunning display - though when there is 4K content to watch - the video watching experience is incredible and unmatched by any other phone currently
  • In a time of bezel-less displays, the design of the XZ1, even though pretty nice looking, is also a little bit dated
  • Camera is decent but not quite as good as other flagship rivals - especially low-light performance is rather average
  • Battery life is again decent, but doesn't stack up well against competition
  • On the whole, Sony has made another flagship smartphone that gets the core elements right – display, camera, battery, power – but doesn't really excel in anything - both the OnePlus 5, and the Samsung Galaxy S8 for instance have better, more flexible camera setups, better battery life and larger screens
