2-Minute Review

Let's cut through the noise, and get to the crux of it. 2 Expert Reviews analysed and summarised by the PhoneCurry Editorial Team, in a short and sweet 2-minute review.

Design

  • The plastic body of the A40 Indian feels sturdy, and doesn’t attract fingerprints
  • Overall small footprint of the phone, makes it pretty easy to handle/carry-around
  • There are rounded edges and sides which make it easy to grip
  • Typing on the A40 Indian is also quite painful as the keys on the virtual keyboard feel too tiny on this screen

Display

  • The display smudges easily and is a pain to keep clean
  • The display is also small, and pixel density is low at 233ppi so images and text aren’t the sharpest
  • The display is pretty reflective too
  • Viewing angles are very narrow too - tilt the phone forwards a bit and the colours immediately begin inverting
  • There’s also no ambient light sensor, so you’ll have to adjust the brightness manually all the time
  • Touch response is not great either, and since the display panel isn't laminated to the glass, it feels a bit disconnected when you’re interacting with the screen
  • Sunlight legibility is also quite weak
  • The phone can handle 1080p video playback, but due to the poor viewing angles, it’s not a very pleasant experience

Software

  • Stock Android UI keeps things nice and simple
  • There’s no notification LED either

Performance

  • Strictly basic performance - you can use the smartphone for calls and basic usage like WhatsApp and messaging, but don’t expect a good experience in any other areas

Camera

  • Mediocre rear and front cameras - image quality is low and often unusable, even for social posting - the live viewfinder is also quite laggy and preview quality is sub-par

Audio

  • The speaker gets fairly loud but the sound is a bit tinny for media files
  • The quality of the accessories, especially the headset, is quite average

Battery

  • Average battery life - with moderate to heavy use, you will need to recharge the phone within half a day
  • Charging is also painfully slow
  • Compared to the Jio Phone and BSNL’s Bharat-1 feature phones, the A40 Indian offers access to most of the popular Android apps, but at the cost of battery life

More

  • Supports 22 Indian languages
  • Although onboard storage isn’t much but thankfully, you can format a microSD card as part of the internal storage (effectively extending it)
  • The USB port is a bit recessed into the body, which means you can use only the bundled cable which has a slightly longer connector - standard Micro-USB cables often don’t work, which might limit the options in case users need to buy a replacement later
  • No support for GPS
