Our Opinion

The Apple iPhone 11 128GB is a slightly better phone, but the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition is slightly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? It’s a close call, but if your budget allows for it, then Apple iPhone 11 128GB might be a slightly better choice.

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Beautiful, premium Apple design, that's similar to the iPhone XR from last year, with a glossy back, except for the new colors, and the new camera module (a frosted glass camera square) at the rear
  • Ergonomically, it's generally a great size and it offers a lovely slim and solid design
  • IP68 water resistance, and more durable glass, compared to last year's iPhones
  • Face ID is now slightly faster, and supports more face angles too - which means you can lean over your iPhone resting on your coffee table, and it will unlock
  • Still packs one of the best IPS displays out there
  • Apple knows how to do software well, and iOS continues to be an intuitive, and smooth experience - plus of course, you get regular, and timely updates
  • Break-neck speeds with the new A13 processor - it's a bit faster in single tasking, and a bigger leap in multitasking, compared to the A12, which already was the fastest mobile chipset around - in simple terms this is the fastest smartphone out there now (along with the iPhone 11 Pro models), and of course runs butter smooth
  • iPhones have always been among the top camera phones each year (along with the Pixels, Galaxy Notes, Galaxy S, and Huawei flagships in recent times), and the iPhone 11 continues that traditions bringing in some serious camera improvements to bring at par with the best of the pack
  • The 2 key camera upgrades are a new ultrawide-angle camera and a Night Mode for low-light photography - and both work quite well
  • The ultrawide-angle camera can make for dramatic shots - you get an expanded-view viewfinder that now previews what's outside the shot, which can help you know when to use the ultrawide lens
  • Apple's version of Night mode too is excellent - it works automatically, taking an extra 1 to 3 seconds to capture more light and assemble a picture that ends up almost surreal and richly colored (you will be wowed) - it's as good as the excellent Night modes on the Pixel 3 and the Huawei P30 Pro - the 2 phones that have so far been champions of night photography
  • Later this year, the iPhone 11 will also offer a new Deep Fusion feature to perform pixel-by-pixel photo processing to deliver even more detail and better textures along with less noise - again, you won't need to activate a separate mode
  • it will just kick in when you're indoors and there's a decent amount of light
  • iPhone video cameras have always been fantastic, arguably the best on any smartphone - in the iPhone 11 they have even better stabilization for smoother video, and look better in darker spaces (though the video camera doesn't use Night mode)
  • Front camera is very good too, and is wider-angled this time - it can digitally zoom in or out to accommodate a wider view that includes more people and background
  • The front camera also get a new "slow motion selfie video" feature ("Slofies") - it's a fun feature, to add some drama to selfies
  • Overall, the excellent cameras on the iPhone 11 bring it in the top bracket, on par with the other 2 top camera phones - the Pixel 3 and the Huawei P30 Pro
  • Excellent audio capabilities - Apple has introduced a feature called spatial audio to the iPhone 11 models, which creates a virtual sound stage to make you believe that the sound is coming out of the screen rather than just at the end of the phone and it's actually quite impressive in action - plus, you also get Dolby Atmos support - again, this is one of the best audio setups on any smartphone
  • The new U1 positioning chip inside all of Apple's new iPhones will allow iPhone 11/Pro/Max owners to more easily AirDrop files to each other by pointing their phones at specific people - and many other interesting location based applications could follow soon
  • Very good battery life - improved significantly over the iPhone XR which itself had good battery life - with moderate usage, you should get about 1.5 days of use
  • This year's iPhone 11 is a very well executed refinement over the iPhone XR - it's more durable, faster, has better cameras, better battery life, and on top of it, cheaper than what the iPhone XR cost when it launched - there might not be any stand-out wow upgrade here but it's a very meaningful upgrade in all key areas
  • It's also much better value for money, for most users, compared to the Pro models - it's as good in all key areas - and the things that are skimped on - the telephoto lens, the OLED screen - you won't miss much
  • Stunning, top-notch design, similar to the OnePlus 7 Pro, that continues to impress
  • Special McLaren orange theme, for McLaren fans
  • The soft-touch glass at the back feels luxurious
  • The frosted rear panel doesn’t attract fingerprints and the subtle gradient makes it look elegant
  • The immersive, 'all screen' razor-sharp display on the front (notch-less) makes for an absolutely gorgeous looking phone
  • Super fast in-display fingerprint reader (comparable in unlocking speed to standard physical fingerprint readers)
  • The selfie camera functions exactly the same as it does on the OnePlus 7 Pro - that is to say, it is mostly silent, and very quick to activate - in fact, it is fast enough to be used for face unlock if you chose
  • Incredible, silky smooth, 'all screen' AMOLED display - with a unique 90Hz screen refresh rate that makes games and movie-watching look more fluid - even things like scrolling through webpages and apps feels really fluid (if you place a standard 60Hz phone side-by-side, you will feel the difference)
  • In fact the 90Hz display pushes the fluidity and speed of the feel of OxygenOS to a whole new level - in practical terms, seeing animations and scrolling at fluid 90FPS does more to make a phone feel performant than any benchmark score - OnePlus has hit the ball out of the park with this one
  • Crisp, high-res screen
  • For avid multimedia consumers, HDR10+ support is on board
  • Overall, this is arguably the best display on any smartphone, at present
  • OxygenOS continues to be one of the most thoughtfully-designed, clean (stock-like) UIs for Android
  • OnePlus’ UI gestures are very nicely implemented - they feel natural and fluid
  • With the cutting edge flagship Snapdragon 855+, some ultra fast storage speed (UFS3), the well-optimized OxygenOS, and the 90Hz screen, the OnePlus 7T Pro is a speed monster, and easily one of the fastest (and the fastest-feeling) Android phones around
  • Good, versatile, triple rear camera setup - there is an ultra wide-angle camera, a standard camera and a telephoto camera - the setup is the same in fact as the OnePlus 7 Pro
  • The camera app has gotten a host of new features such as a Super Macro mode and the ability to use Nightscape with the wide-angle camera
  • On top of these, OnePlus made some notable changes to how the 7T Pro processes images - the company’s UltraShot technology will analyze what you’re shooting and then apply different presets of color, contrast, exposure compensation, and HDR effect (This is similar to the AI camera features touted by OnePlus’ competitors.)
  • Excellent stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos
  • Good battery life with a 4085mAH battery - a slight improvement over the OnePlus 7 Pro - you will get a comfortable one day of use
  • Super fast charging speeds - Warp Charge 30T brings the latest fast charging tech from OnePlus - it promises up to 23% faster charging speeds, though real-world gains are a bit more conservative - charging times from 0 to 100% clock in at about 71 minutes
  • OnePlus builds on its best ever phone, the OnePlus 7 Pro, with faster performance, a bigger battery and new camera modes - the 7T Pro isn't an overhaul of the previous OnePlus 7 Pro, but it doesn't need to be - it's simply a thoughtful selection of upgrades, all combining into a phone that once again undercuts other premium flagships by almost 50% in terms of price, and yet delivers (almost) the same flagship experience
  • The OnePlus 7T Pro is for those seeking the absolute best without spending top dollar - it nails almost everything you’d want from a 2019 flagship, and the few misses are easy to overlook for the money you save - for everyone else, there’s the cheaper OnePlus 7T, or the even cheaper Redmi K20 Pro
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The large display notch is still there
  • It's not OLED though, and it's not as high resolution, as the iPhone 11 Pro models (but you will be hard pressed to find much of a difference in everyday use)
  • Siri has generally fallen behind Google Assistant now, in terms of usefulness and intelligence, so iPhones are not the best 'smart assistant' experiences now
  • Only Pro models get the 2x telephoto lens, so there is no optical zoom to be had on the iPhone 11
  • The ultrawide-angle camera doesn’t have Night Mode or OIS
  • While the phone supports fast charging, the included charger is just 5W - you will need to buy a compatible fast charger separately if you want the fast charging goodness
  • Of course, if you are not wedded to the iOS ecosystem, there are a number of Android flagships from Samsung, OnePlus, Google, Huawei, Asus, and Xiaomi - that are worthy competitors
  • On the heavy and large side - and a bit too big to use comfortably with one hand
  • No IP-certified water resistance, that's available on some of it's competitors like the Galaxy 10e
  • Having said that though, the camera setup on the OnePlus 7T Pro, while a slight (software-based) improvement on the OnePlus 7 Pro, is still not quite as good as the best cameras out there - the Huawei P30 Pro, the iPhone 11, the Pixel 3/3a, and the Galaxy S10 series - especially in terms of low light performance
  • No standard headphone jack - you will need to use either USB-C or wireless headphones (none of which is included in the retail package)
  • While the battery life is decent, the main competition - the Galaxy S10/S10e, and iPhone 11 - is significantly ahead here
  • No wireless charging support
