2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Beautiful, premium Apple design, clad in a single piece of milled glass with a matte finish that covers everything except the Apple logo and the phones' three cameras - it's a little more premium looking and sophisticated than the iPhone 11
  • Packs a more premium stainless steel frame (instead of the aluminium frame on the iPhone 11)
  • The matte finish also means it's more fingerprint resistant compared to the iPhone 11's glossy back
  • IP68 water resistance, and more durable glass, compared to last year's iPhones - in fact Apple claims the glass used on iPhone Pros is the "most durable glass used on a smartphone"
  • Face ID is now slightly faster, and supports more face angles too - which means you can lean over your iPhone resting on your coffee table, and it will unlock
  • Beautiful, high resolution OLED display - one of the best on any smartphone - and even brighter than the excellent OLED displays on last year's iPhone XS and XS Max
  • The iOS dark mode which is finally here looks great on the iPhone 11 Pros' OLED screen
  • It's also the largest display of the 2019 iPhones - so if you really enjoy your movies, this is the premium iPhone to get
  • Apple knows how to do software well, and iOS continues to be an intuitive, and smooth experience - plus of course, you get regular, and timely updates
  • Break-neck speeds with the new A13 processor - it's a bit faster in single tasking, and a bigger leap in multitasking, compared to the A12, which already was the fastest mobile chipset around - in simple terms this is the fastest smartphone out there now (along with the iPhone 11 Pro models), and of course runs butter smooth
  • iPhones have always been among the top camera phones each year (along with the Pixels, Galaxy Notes, Galaxy S, and Huawei flagships in recent times), and the iPhone 11 Pro Max continues that tradition bringing in some serious camera improvements to bring at par with the best of the pack
  • The 2 key camera upgrades are - a new ultrawide-angle camera and a Night Mode for low-light photography - and all 3 work quite well
  • The ultrawide-angle camera can make for dramatic shots - you get an expanded-view viewfinder that now previews what's outside the shot, which can help you know when to use the ultrawide lens
  • Apple's version of Night mode too is excellent - it works automatically, taking an extra 1 to 3 seconds to capture more light and assemble a picture that ends up almost surreal and richly colored (you will be wowed) - it's as good as the excellent Night modes on the Pixel 3 and the Huawei P30 Pro - the 2 phones that have so far been champions of night photography
  • The telephoto camera with 2x zoom has a wider aperture this time, which means it's better than last year's iPhones at providing bright photos when it's dark out
  • Later this year, the iPhone 11 Pro Max will also offer a new Deep Fusion feature to perform pixel-by-pixel photo processing to deliver even more detail and better textures along with less noise - again, you won't need to activate a separate mode
  • it will just kick in when you're indoors and there's a decent amount of light
  • iPhone video cameras have always been fantastic, arguably the best on any smartphone - in the iPhone 11 Pro Max they have even better stabilization for smoother video, and look better in darker spaces (though the video camera doesn't use Night mode)
  • Front camera is very good too, and is wider-angled this time - it can digitally zoom in or out to accommodate a wider view that includes more people and background
  • The front camera also get a new "slow motion selfie video" feature ("Slofies") - it's a fun feature, to add some drama to selfies
  • Overall, the excellent cameras on the iPhone 11 Pro Max bring it in the top bracket, on par with the other 2 top camera phones - the Pixel 3 and the Huawei P30 Pro
  • Excellent audio capabilities - Apple has introduced a feature called spatial audio to the iPhone 11 models, which creates a virtual sound stage to make you believe that the sound is coming out of the screen rather than just at the end of the phone and it's actually quite impressive in action - plus, you also get Dolby Atmos support - again, this is one of the best audio setups on any smartphone
  • The new U1 positioning chip inside all of Apple's new iPhones will allow iPhone 11/Pro/Max owners to more easily AirDrop files to each other by pointing their phones at specific people - and many other interesting location based applications could follow soon
  • Excellent battery life - improved very significantly over the iPhone XS Max - by as much as 30% - with moderate usage, you should comfortably get 1.5+ days of use - overall battery life is the best of the 2019 iPhones
  • Fast charging support, and the 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max also are the first iPhones to ship with a bundled fast charger (finally!)
  • This year's iPhone 11 Pro Max is a well executed refinement over the iPhone XS Max - it's more durable, faster, has better cameras, better battery life - there might not be any stand-out wow upgrade here but it's a very meaningful upgrade in all key areas
  • It's the premium iPhone to get this year, if you are looking for a combination of premium, and large screen for watching content
  • Top end flagship build quality - the S20 Ultra is a fine piece of hardware that exudes quality and craftsmanship
  • The front looks absolutely gorgeous with an almost edge to edge screen and just a single punch-hole at the top centre - the front glass is slightly less curved along the side edges than previous S series phones
  • The phone is sealed tight and carries an IP68 rating, so you can accidentally dunk it in some water and it’ll survive
  • Stunning 6.9-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen that is the best you can buy on any phone right now - the sharpness of the display is simply outstanding with eye-popping clarity
  • The 120Hz refresh rate gives the screen a luscious smoothness that has to be seen to be believed, you’ve got a screen that simply dominates every other panel on the market
  • The screen is also HDR10+ certified, which means the right content will deliver incredible dynamic range - the HDR10 movies on Netflix look really impressive
  • Running the Galaxy S20 Ultra is Samsung's OneUI 2.1 on Android 10 - which, as far as Android UIs go, is one of the most refined, well thought-out experiences
  • Powering the S20 Ultra is the Samsung's own Exynos 990, which is one of the best CPUs available in the market, just a shade behind the Apple's A13 - the phone feels fast all the time, no matter what content or app you throw at the S20 Ultra, it devours the calculations and offers buttery smooth performance
  • The Galaxy S20 Ultra is a camera beast - the camera should be, and is, the number-one selling point for this phone - it’s a monster of an imaging system and is more advanced than just about anything you’ve seen before
  • Samsung gave the Galaxy S20 Ultra an impressive quad-camera system on the rear - the standard lens boasts a 108MP sensor, joined by an ultra wide-angle 12MP camera, an optical telephoto 48MP camera, and a time-of-flight camera to help process depth information
  • The main 108MP sensor is a beast, the base setting uses a process called nona binning to merge nine pixels to take 12MP shots, most standard daytime shots look nearly perfect - you can opt to shoot the full 108MP at any time, the full resolution shots are indeed impressive in their detail and the noise isn’t bad either
  • 48MP telephoto lens is capable of 10x lossless zoom and up to 100x digital zoom - the S20 Ultra’s mix of sophisticated hardware and software deliver a precise images that are much clearer than anything else in the market (though, the 100x zoom is just impractical and shots come out blurry)
  • The S20 Ultra’s 12MP Ultra-wide lens churns out exceptional results, delivering eye-catching shots, even in challenging lighting conditions
  • The low-light shots turn impressive, even in incredibly dark situations, the clarity is quite impressive, and the colours are perfect with little noise - the night mode further improves the quality with brighter and colourful images (though, the Pixel and iPhones still do a slightly better job in low light)
  • The most standout camera feature on the S20 Ultra is Single Take mode - when engaged, Single Take records a 10-second video and snaps multiple images, giving you an entire gallery of options to choose from and share
  • Video recording with the phone looks amazing - it’s sharp, colourful, properly exposed, and on-point when it comes to white balance - video also supports live focus mode, this uses the ToF camera to help judge depth and create a portrait-like effect when capturing video - it is also capable of capturing 8K videos (though, the use case for 8K is very limited)
  • The Galaxy S20 Ultra has improved ten-fold in Live Focus mode - the S20 Ultra captures very realistic photos and is a massive step up from the portrait mode in Samsung’s prior phones (though, iPhone 11 series is still the champ in portrait shots)
  • The 40MP selfie camera does a fine job - you get a worryingly clear view of your pores in good light, and the target resolution dips in low light to keep images clean and bright
  • A pair of USB-C headphones is included in the box
  • Very good stereo speakers
  • Good battery life with the massive 5000 mAh cell, which is the biggest yet in a Galaxy S series device - you will get a comfortable one day of use
  • Sufficient fast charging with the supplied 25W charger (supports upto 45W charging) - it boosts the battery by 50% after just 27 minutes
  • Also supports 15W wireless charging, and it can fill the battery to 50% in just 35 minutes on a charging pad
  • It’s honestly a ridiculous phone, a hyper car of flagship handsets, among sports cars - the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra offers pretty much every feature any phone owner could want - it has a gorgeous screen, classy hardware, wicked performance, good battery life, and capable cameras, if you have the means and the desire to own the most advanced phone on the market - go buy it (though, it’s also huge, heavy, and as pricey as they come)
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The large display notch is still there
  • Siri has generally fallen behind Google Assistant now, in terms of usefulness and intelligence, so iPhones are not the best 'smart assistant' experiences now
  • The ultrawide-angle camera doesn’t have Night Mode or OIS
  • Having said that, it remains ridiculously expensive - so it's only worth splurging on if you have a lot to splurge
  • And, if you are not wedded to the iOS ecosystem, there are a number of Android flagships from Samsung, OnePlus, Google, Huawei, Asus, and Xiaomi - that are more than worthy competitors
  • If you are wedded to the iOS ecosystem, the significantly cheaper iPhone 11, that is almost as good in all key areas, will provide you much better bang for your buck
  • The in-display fingerprint sensor is unreliable - it’s slower than other sensors on competition and far less accurate
  • Aesthetically, the S20 Ultra looks dull, the colour selection is particularly disappointing (just grey & black) - the huge camera module doesn't help either
  • It is also enormous and requires two hands to use most of the time - it doesn’t fit well in pockets, despite its slippery surfaces, and more or less requires a case for protection, which will only make it bigger
  • The phone just takes a half a tick longer to grab focus than it should, and when shooting video, it’ll lose focus and have to hunt for it again
  • It also have problems when it sees faces in the frame, it smoothens the skin tones excessively and brightens the whole scene unnecessarily
  • Overall, while Samsung has created flagship lever cameras that compete at the top level and comes out as champs in many situations, they are still slightly behind the iPhone cameras, that are more consistent and don't rely on just numbers, but quality
  • That said, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra isn't the best phone for everyone - a wider majority of people will do just fine with the Samsung Galaxy S20 or Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, you'll get the same fast processor, 120Hz display and improved cameras (minus the powerful zoom)
