2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Elegant, 'new' charming design, that resonates with the iPhone 4 and 5 models - it has flat aluminium sides and a flat-screen, the glossy back comes in plenty of colours to choose from - it’s the smartphone equivalent of jewelry
  • At the front, the bezels are narrower and Apple is using the new sapphire crystal shield to provide better drop protection than previous iPhones
  • It's cute - very cute in fact - and exceptionally light too, making it a genuine delight to use day-to-day, especially one-handed
  • The back of the phone features Apple’s new MagSafe magnetic wireless charging and mount system - it let's accessories to attach at the back of the phone magnetically, Apple has some of its own accessories like a wireless charger, a wallet and many cases that attach to the back - Apple is hoping a MagSafe ecosystem will develop as third parties find more use for this execution
  • IP68 water and dust resistance - the iPhone 12 series can take a dunk of up to 6 meters, compared to 2 meters on similarly rated phones
  • Face ID is plenty fast and accurate (though, it could be a pain to use while wearing a mask)
  • The iPhone 12 mini features an OLED, 5.4-inch, Full HD+ Super Retina XDR display that looks bright and vibrant, it has blacker blacks - the bezels are a lot thinner all around too, which certainly makes for a far better viewing experience when watching Netflix or scrolling through social media
  • As always iOS 14 continues to be a clean, intuitive, and smooth experience - additionally, you will get regular updates for years to come, something beyond any Android manufacturer could provide
  • Apple has added few customisation options with the new iOS 14 - you can now use custom icon packs and add widgets to your home screen
  • Incredibly rapid performance from the new A14 Bionic - Apple remains the undisputed king when it comes to mobile CPU performance - iPhone 12 series is the fastest phone available in the market - you can throw anything, be it heavy games, AR, or numerous app, it handles everything with ease
  • iPhone 12 mini features the same cameras as on the iPhone 12, just in a smaller package - the primary cameras now has wider ƒ/1.6 aperture to allow in slightly more light, night mode is available on all cameras on the iPhone 12 mini and even a night portrait mode
  • The primary camera's image quality is pretty spectacular - it produces some of the best looking images, with plenty of bright colours and rich detail
  • The ultra-wide camera remains the same as the last year's iPhone 11 - it adds some software improvement and the images look pretty dramatic as the iPhone 12 mini trades detail for space - the night mode on the ultra-wide also works well
  • Low-light photography is excellent with the wider aperture, you will get clearer, brighter shots, a nice improvement in image quality and sharpness in dim lighting conditions
  • Night mode is impressive, the iPhone 12 mini needs to drop into night mode less often, but when it does, you get bright, sharp images that look amazing - they still feel like they were taken at night and the camera doesn't over-blow it
  • Video quality iPhones have always been the best in class, the iPhone 12 mini continues that tradition and even adds Dolby Vision, a first for any mobile camera - the Dolby Vision adds features for Pro filmmakers to use that no other phone provides
  • Very good selfies come out of the front camera on the iPhone 12 mini - the wider view can accommodate more people in selfies - night mode selfies portrait is a great new feature and produces impressive results
  • Overall, the cameras remain excellent and on the top of the chart, right there with the Note 20 Ultra and Pixels of the world
  • Excellent stereo speaker setup - the Dolby Atmos support is still present, with the Apple-exclusive spatial audio feature
  • The Apple iPhone 12 mini might be the smallest of the iPhone 12 models, but it is a fantastic little device that shouldn't be underestimated - it has a lovely lightweight compact design, absolutely stunning display, great cameras, and delivers a smooth and fluid performance
  • Continues the gorgeous, premium design language of last year's iPhone X - the only change here from the XS models, is that the frame is 7000-series aluminium and not stainless steel - but the build quality is still absolutely top-notch
  • Ditching the home button and moving to a face-based login was a bold move from Apple last year - and its mostly ended up working (with just a bit of a learning curve for previous iPhone users), and thus allowed modern iPhones to go nearly all-screen - the new iPhones this year continue the trend
  • Comfortable body - the XR isn't iPhone XS size, or XS Max size - it's right in the middle, and that looks likes a sweet spot - it feels much more comfortable to hold than the wider XS Max, and easier to use with one hand
  • Water and dust resistance
  • The XR also comes in a wider array of fun color options - lighter blue, coral, red and bright yellow - all look cheerful and well done - and for many iPhones users, it might be a refreshing break from silver, black and gold, if they want something new (these colors options are not available on the iPhone XS/Max)
  • Face ID is now faster than before
  • The LCD display is fantastic - large, vibrant, and bright - arguably the best LCD display on any phone - though it's a (small) step behind the OLED one on the XS models in terms of contrast (it's also lower resolution on paper, but you are unlikely to notice that in regular use)
  • Uses a durable, scratch-resistant glass (as per Apple's claims, the front display glass is as strong as the XS, while the rear glass is "better than the iPhone X, " but not as strong as what the XS)
  • Larger screen than the iPhone XS
  • The new iOS 12 brings a number of new features like group notifications and most importantly makes deep performance improvements - Apple is known for regularly tuning its software to perform optimally with the hardware - overall, this as refined and polished a software experience on a smartphone as you can hope for
  • One of the best things about iPhones of course is that you are pretty much guaranteed updates for many years to come (even the best Android phones top out at about 3 years), so as long as you take care of your phone physically, the longevity factor here is really high!
  • The iPhone XR is a performance monster - there is no other way of putting it - it still blows the best Android phones away - and the new A12 Bionic processor sets a new standard for performance, and for chip design - with the same internals, you get the same top-end performance as the XS series
  • The most important gains from the crazy fast A12 Bionic are in AI, AR and graphics - AR apps for instance show better, smoother video and higher-resolution backgrounds (Apple says that's due to a greatly improved Neural Engine chip for machine learning and computer vision)
  • The rear and front cameras will blow you away, and are just a slight step behind the best camera smartphones - the iPhone XS/Max and the Pixel 3
  • The rear camera delivers great photos in both dark and high-contrast environments (Apple calls this "Smart HDR") thanks to a new sensor and the new image processor on the A12 Bionic chip - in practice, this means photos look better whether shot on a nighttime street, in a dark bar or in bright sunlight - focus is faster, too
  • There is also a new adjustable background depth feature in portrait mode, that allows you to tweak the bokeh level, giving you even more power over your photos
  • The iPhone XR' video recording quality might benefit even more from the phone's camera improvements than still photos - the added HDR (better auto contrast, as with the still photos) and extra stabilization will make even your more casual videos look more vibrant, even at 1080p and 30fps - and the microphones now record in stereo, too
  • As with the iPhone XS series, the iPhone XR pumps out some solid stereo sound in landscape mode - it sounds crisp and loud - movies and games sound great, almost like listening on an iPad Pro
  • Good battery life - in fact the best battery life of this year's iPhones - it will last you the full day even with heavy use
  • Better wireless charging than before - Apple says the phone's wireless charging coil has improved so there'll be fewer misses when you place it on a charge pad
  • Finally, the iPhones this year also add dual SIM support - this is done with a physical nano-SIM + eSIM combination (eSIMs are currently supported in India only on Airtel and Jio)
  • All said and done, the iPhone XR most of iPhone XS/Max features and advantages, and does it at a much lower price - it's in fact, arguably, the best iPhone value in years - for most people this is going to the iPhone to get this year
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The notch is still present and is significantly larger than any other competing flagship phones
  • There's no high refresh rate to be found on the iPhone 12 mini, so, you're stuck with that 60Hz refresh rate instead - it has become the standard for almost every Android flagship phone out there right now
  • Siri still lags as a virtual assistant - it would be great if Apple would put much more effort into making Siri a little more competitive with the Google Assistant
  • The 2x telephoto lens and LiDAR for improved focus in low-light, is exclusive to only Pro models
  • Apple has added 5G support to all iPhone 12 models, however, they leave out the support for faster 5G mmWave in Indian models - there's also no infrastructure for 5G availability in India and there might not be for years to come - 5G is good to have as an option that makes the iPhones future proof, but not a game-changing feature
  • Average battery life - the iPhone 12 mini gets the smallest battery out of the bunch, it will require a charge to get through the day
  • The iPhone supports improved 20W fast charging, but Apple isn't providing a charging adapter with the new iPhones at all - so, if you don't have an adapter lying around or you want to use that fast charging, you will have to buy that separately
  • Though, if you want a more 'normal' form factor and want better battery, get the bigger iPhones
  • No HDR support (which is there on the XS series) - which means very high-contrast videos won't look quite as good as on the XS - but this is of course nit picking - you will only really know the difference if you keep the phones side-by-side
  • No 3D touch support, that's present on the XS series - though if you are like most iPhone users, you are unlikely to miss this little-used feature
  • The only (small) difference from the iPhone XS/Max cameras is that there is no second tele-photo lens on the rear - which means no optical zoom shots, and slightly less amazing bokeh shots - also the bokeh shots only work on people - but not on pets, for instance
  • Headphone jack dongles are now no longer included in the retail package - which means you will have to rely on Apple's included lightning port earphones (or purchase wireless earphones)
  • No fast charger included in the retail box - Apple only includes a 5-watt basic Lightning iPhone charger in-box - a fast charger will need to be purchased separately
