The realme 3 Pro (4GB RAM, 64GB) is a slightly better phone than the Huawei Honor 9X (4GB RAM), and is also significantly better value for money. What should you buy? Go for the realme 3 Pro (4GB RAM, 64GB)!

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Unique, striking glass rear panel design - one of the best looking phones in this price range, with its Sapphire Blue finish combined with Honor’s trademark reflective geometric tiles (the Midnight Black colour option is much more subdued though)
  • The front is modern and cutting edge too, with a 'full screen' notch-less display thanks to the pop-up selfie camera mechanism (its the cheapest pop-up selfie camera phone, as of today)
  • There’s a fingerprint sensor on the back that works well
  • Large, surprising bright, 6.59-inch Full HD+ IPS display - overall quality of the display is really good for an affordable smartphone
  • The lack of a notch makes watching video and playing games much more immersive
  • Honor's EMUI based on Android 9 Pie (with all Google services and access to Play Store) is in a good place these days and is one of the better custom Android skins - there are no ads here and a decent assortment of useful extras (the lack of Android 10 at the time of the launch is a letdown)
  • This might also be one of the last Honor phones to provide access to the Google app ecosystem (because of the ongoing ban on Huawei by the Trump administration, future models of Honor might not have access to Google Play Services)
  • Good, fast mid-range performance with the Kirin 710F SoC (similar to the Snapdragon 660) - Honor 9X will do for lag-free daily operations and stutter-free gaming
  • Good triple camera setup at the rear - 48-megapixel primary + 8-megapixel wide-angle camera + 2-megapixel depth sensor
  • In good lighting, the primary camera can shoot decent 12MP pixel binned photos - exposure is good in most environments, white balance and the colours are pretty accurate too - there's an AI mode that can boost colours even more
  • Low-light performance is good for a phone in this price bracket - noise is kept reasonably in check even in very dark shots - Night Mode also helps boost the phone’s low light capabilities, provided you have steady hands
  • Depth sensor works pretty well and produces some good portrait shots
  • Good 16MP pop-up selfie camera - shots are detailed, colours are accurate, and the contrast is nice
  • Very good battery life with a 4000 mAh cell - will easily see you through a full day and a half of moderate use
  • Honor 9X continues Honor's tradition of making good quality, desirable, but affordable phones with its eye-catching looks, notch-less display and good set of triple cameras (it's far from perfect though, with the lack of fast charging and the year old processor)
  • Gorgeous design, with some eye-catching color combinations for the (plastic) back panel
  • Very good build quality and finish
  • Fast fingerprint sensor, and face unlock
  • Good 6.3inch IPS panel, with a small dewdrop notch, and minimal bezels - it's sharp, decently bright, has high contrast, and accurate colors
  • Media playback is handled well, and videos are rendered with punchy colours
  • ColorOS 6 UI has a new, cleaner look, and is quite feature packed, including plenty of motion and screen gestures
  • Thankfully, unlike, its main competitor, the Redmi Note 7 Pro, there are no spammy ads in the UI
  • Class leading performance (especially in terms of GPU) with a Snapdragon 710 at the core - everything from daily use to complex games like PUBG is a breeze
  • The phone also doesn't heat too much even after prolonged gaming sessions
  • Excellent camera package - mostly on par with the leading camera phone of this price bracket, the Redmi Note 7 Pro
  • Packs the 16-megapixel Sony IMX519 sensor with an f/1.7 aperture - this is the same sensor used in some premium phones such as the OnePlus 6T - there's also a secondary 5-megapixel depth sensor for the phone's Portrait mode
  • In daylight, the the Realme 3 Pro captures very good details in landscape shots
  • Macros are sharp and well detailed too
  • The phone's AI scene recognition is quick to recognise most common objects such as flowers
  • Night photography is pretty decent too - and the the phone's Nightscape mode comes in handy here - it takes a second or two longer than usual to capture your shot, but the end result is a sharper image with much better detail
  • The depth sensor does a very good job with edge detection, and even in low light, you can get a very pleasing bokeh effect
  • Good 25-megapixel selfie camera too - selfies from the Realme 3 Pro pack a lot of detail and noise is kept in check - colors are excellent as well
  • Selfie portraits are quite good too, even though they don't get the benefit of a dedicated depth sensing camera - subject separation is very competent, there are no clipped ears and blur is natural-looking as well
  • Good video recording performance too - with good overall footage quality, and nice color reproduction
  • The single speaker gets loud enough for media playback
  • Excellent battery life - the combination of a large 4045mAh battery pack, an efficient processor, and Realme's optimizations means that this an easy 2-days battery life phone, even beating out (slightly) the excellent Redmi Note 7 Pro in battery life tests
  • Super fast VOOC fast charging using the bundled charger is again class-leading - it can top up the battery from zero all the way to 90 percent in about an hour
  • Overall, the Realme 3 Pro is absolutely great bang-for-the-buck, and is pretty neck-to-neck with the other top phone in this price bracket - the Redmi Note 7 Pro - while the Redmi Note 7 has a more premium glass build, and the modern USB Type-C port, the Realme 3 Pro has an edge in terms of a bundled fast charger, a slightly better processor, and cleaner (ad-free) software
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The Honor 9X is a gargantuan handset - it certainly isn’t built for small hands or pockets - also a bit heavy at 197gm
  • Face Unlock is not available on the Honor 9X
  • If you are an Android purist, and prefer stock like Android and minimal bloat, you should look elsewhere
  • Sadly, Honor 9X is far from being the most powerful smartphone at this price range, there are better options available, like the Redmi Note 8 Pro with MediaTek G90T & the Realme 5 Pro with Snapdragon 712
  • The image quality from wide-angle camera is disappointing (however, it does provide exaggerated perspective shots on the cheap)
  • Video performance is average from both primary and wide-angle cameras - there's no 4K here and no electronic stabilisation at Full HD
  • Overall, while the Honor 9X offers good cameras for the price, Xiaomi & Realme offer even better cameras
  • The phone’s single speaker is average at best
  • The phone doesn’t sport any nifty fast-charging technology - it takes a painfully long 128 minutes to fully charge the 4000 mAh battery
  • If you're looking for an all-rounder, you'll have better luck with the Redmi Note 8 Pro or the Realme 5 Pro, especially in terms of processing power and faster charging
  • Realme continues to pre-install quite a few third-party apps such as a Webnovel, NewsPoint, ShareChat, etc (though most of them can be uninstalled)
  • Video stabilization at 1080p could have been better though
  • Uses the old microUSB port, instead of the modern USB Type-C port
