Our Opinion

The realme 1 (4GB RAM, 64GB) is a slightly better phone than the Infinix Note 5 (3GB RAM, 32GB), and is also slightly better value for money. What should you buy? Go for the realme 1 (4GB RAM, 64GB)!

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • With a glossy plastic back panel coated with 10 layers of nano chrome particles and a modern, tall display, Infinix Note 5 feels premium and good to hold, and is easily one of the best built phone in this price bracket
  • The phone does not have antenna lines at the back, and with the subtle Android One and Infinix branding, it adds a neat look to the rear panel
  • Bright display, with vivid colours, in the new 18:9 aspect ratio - it renders good colour reproduction with wide viewing angles
  • The USP of the phone of course is that it's part of the Android One series, which means you get simple stock Android, and a guarantee of updates for 2 years
  • Good day-to-day performance, with a mid-tier MediaTek Helio P23 (similar to Snapdragon 625) - everything, except very heavy games, will run smoothly
  • Decent set of rear and front cameras, especially in daylight
  • Both cameras also have a software based portrait/bokeh mode, that works reasonably well, as well as scene-recognition AI features
  • Extra long battery life, with a solid 4500mah battery - with moderate use, the phone will comfortably lasts for one and a half days
  • Fast charging support
  • On the whole, the Infinix Note 5 is a worthy option in the budget segment, and can compete well against the likes of the Redmi Note 5 (which is slightly ahead on software customisability and overall build quality, but slightly behind on software simplicity and battery backup)
  • Bold, stunning design thanks to the diamond-like reflective body - this is a device that certainly stands out - it is housed inside a fibre-glass casing that has been cut at different angles such that each section of the glass back turns to a different shade of black when light is reflecting off it!
  • Lightweight and well built
  • Decent, modern 18:9 display with minimal bezels - which means that despite the large screen size, the phone will fit nicely into your hand
  • Good all-round performance, similar to Snapdragon 636 phones, like the Redmi Note 5 Pro
  • Decent rear and front cameras - both the cameras support depth of field or Portrait effect, and Augmented Reality (AR) stickers
  • The rear camera pictures are reasonably crisp, and have decent color reproduction
  • The front camera relies heavily on Oppo’s AI algorithms to fine-tune the photos which results in good (if slightly artificial looking) photos
  • Overall, cameras are decent, but not quite up to the high benchmark of the Redmi Note 5 Pro
  • Good battery life - easily gives over a day’s usage for an average user
  • Dedicated dual SIM card slots and microSD slot
  • Supports VoLTE on both the dual sim slots
  • On the whole, the Realme 1 offers a very solid option in spite of being in a super competitive price segment having some great phones by the likes of Xiaomi and Asus - if an interesting design, fast performance and good battery life are your primary concerns, then it should definitely be towards the top of your shortlist
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The shiny back panel easily attracts fingerprints, smudges and scratches
  • The fingerprint sensor on the phone is a bit on the slow side
  • The display on the phone, while pretty nice, is also reflective and therefore outdoor visibility is average
  • While the cameras are pretty decent in well-lit conditions, they are average in low light
  • No fingerprint sensor, so you have to rely on the face unlock for quick unlocking (which does work quite well)
  • The display is decent on the whole, but outdoor visibility is pretty ordinary
  • Oppo's Color OS UI is not the most refined Android UI, and looks cluttered at places
  • No support for fast charging - the phones take a little over two hours to charge from zero to full
