Our Opinion

The Motorola Edge Plus is a slightly better phone, but the Xiaomi Mi 10 5G 128GB is significantly better value for money. Which phone should you buy? Depends on how much your want to spend!

2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Slick, modern design - the Motorola Edge Plus has the look and feel of a flagship phone with its curved glass sandwich design
  • The front looks stunning - the display wraps around the sides at almost 90-degree leaving no bezels along the sides at all
  • The in-display fingerprint sensor, is fast and reasonably accurate
  • Sharp, vibrant and large 6.7-inch OLED Full HD+ display - the display’s notable feature is its curved ‘waterfall’ sides which makes it look seamless
  • The 90 Hz higher refresh rate makes scrolling through apps or browsing online articles a smooth experience (though, other flagships offer 120 Hz display, like the S20 Plus)
  • The curved sides can be assigned gesture shortcuts using the "Edge touch" feature and you can trigger different apps and functions from the sides - the sides can also be used as trigger button in some games (though, the gestures are difficult to remember)
  • Motorola’s software has led the pack for quite some time - the software is clean and very close to stock Android, with only the lightest enhancements to improve the experience of using the phone day and in day out
  • Motorola has committed to at least two major OS upgrades for the phone, in addition to security patches for two years
  • Top-end flagship performance with the Snapdragon 865 chipset - Motorola Edge Plus has all the performance you’ll ever need - it powers through the most intensive apps and games with ease and the phone always feels fast and light on its feet
  • Good, versatile quad-rear camera setup - a 108MP primary sensor, 16MP ultra-wide, 8MP telephoto and a 3D TOF camera for depth sensing
  • Image quality out of the Moto's main cam in daylight is excellent - a ton of detail in the 27MP shots and the dynamic range is well worthy of the Edge+'s flagship stature
  • The ultra-wide camera is a very capable performer - it offers a wider field of view and the images show excellent contrast and dynamic range and likeable lively colours - the ultra-wide-angle camera of the Edge+ has autofocus and that lets it do some nice closeups too
  • The portrait mode is impressive and show excellent subject detection and good blur quality
  • Selfies are quite nice coming out of the Edge Plus, with excellent dynamic range and spot-on colours, and the focus distance is just right for arm's length shots - portrait mode for selfies also work well
  • Video recording from the Edge Plus is also good - you can shoot up to 6K video
  • Stellar battery life with the 5000 mAh battery - it tops the competition with the largest battery a phone has to offer at this price - it will easily last you for 2 days of moderate use
  • There's 15W wireless charging and 5W of reverse wireless charging that you could use to charge other devices
  • Very good set of stereo speakers
  • Also included is a 3.5mm jack, which is a rare sight at this price
  • Great-looking, well-refined and trendy "glass sandwich" design - the Twilight Grey looks vastly from metallic to blueish and even slightly green, depending on light and angle and the Coral Green looks even more visually pleasing
  • The fronts houses a gorgeous, modern curved edge-to-edge display with a single cutout for the selfie camera
  • The Mi 10 fits snugly and securely in hand, with the metal frame perfectly shaped to provide a little bit of extra grip
  • The useful IR blaster is on the top
  • The in-display fingerprint reader and face unlock work great, both snappy and reliable
  • A stunning, punchy 6.67-inch, Super AMOLED display, which can stand its own in terms of quality compared to the competition
  • The 90 Hz refresh rate makes the visuals and animations, incredibly polished and smooth (though, more flagships are switching to 120 Hz panels)
  • The display is sufficiently bright for use in direct sunlight
  • Mi 10 is certified for HDR10+ and covers Widevine L1 DRM, meaning, you can enjoy all the HDR content, at maximum resolution from any streaming service you want and have a great experience while doing so
  • The MIUI 11 on the Mi 10 is one of the more polished and refined Android skins around - you will get a plethora of customisation and features, the animations are fast and looks great with the 90 Hz display
  • Powered by the king of the hill in the Android world, the Snapdragon 865, this is about as fast as things currently get in the Android realm
  • A very good quad-camera setup - consisting of a 108MP primary lens, a 13MP ultra-wide, a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth sensor
  • In daylight, the Mi 10 makes great use of its potent main camera, shots come out with abundant detail, excellent dynamic range, and very mature colour science - the Ai mode can automatically pick-up and apply little tweaks for the detected scene, and works well
  • On a good sunny day, the ultra-wide camera does its main task of capturing more of the scene pretty well (though, quality isn't as good as the main camera)
  • The macro camera works well and the shots are perfectly usable, especially for social media, where they are likely to end up anyway
  • Portraits are great, even without the portrait mode, the primary camera is capable of producing very natural looking bokeh - portrait mode takes things to the next level, subject separation is on point and Xiaomi has packed the Studio lighting section full of interesting lighting effects
  • In lowlight, shots have plenty of detail, contrast, and nice colours - definitely a flagship-worthy performance
  • There's no telephoto camera, but the Mi 10 is still quite capable at capturing 2X zoom photos, thanks to the large 108MP sensor - images come out excellent in both daylight and low-light
  • The selfie camera is decent, it producing perfectly usable Instagram worthy selfies
  • Video recording is very good too, it is capable of capturing 8K video - you get video image stabilisation pretty-much all around, except at 8K resolution
  • Excellent stereo speakers - the Mi 10 sounds amazing
  • Excellent battery with the 4780 mAh battery inside - it can last up to 2 days of moderate use
  • The 30W fast charging is plenty fast - a full charge will take around 72 minutes
  • The Mi 10 is a well-rounded flagship device and sits right between the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro and comes out as an excellent option if you're looking for some great cameras, excellent battery life and a stunning display
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • A bit thick at 9.6mm, which is noticeably more than other handsets at this price
  • The volume button and power key, are razor-thin and feel cheap
  • The phone isn’t officially rated for water and dust resistance
  • The telephoto camera lets you zoom up to 10X but the resulting images are just average (though the zoomed images in manual mode are quite nice and this seems like a software issue which might be fixed in future)
  • The low-light photography from the Motorola Edge Plus is average - the night mode slightly helps in improving the image quality, but it's not sufficient
  • Overall, Motorola Edge Plus offers capable cameras, but they don't stand very tall among the competition, the underdogs like OnePlus have upped their game and the iPhone and Pixels are still the kings of the hill
  • The phone only supports 18W fast charging and that's low for this price - it takes nearly 2 hours for the phone to completely charge
  • The Motorola Edge Plus directly competes with the Galaxy S20 Plus in price and objectively, the Galaxy S20 Plus is a better phone with it's a better display, faster charging and very good cameras, and things like IP certification just make the S20 Plus more compelling
  • If you're looking for more bang for the buck, the new Mi 10 5G offers the same 108MP camera and some other exciting features, and then there're the OnePlus brothers that are always the safe bet for anyone
  • The matte finish on the back of the Mi 10 is a real grease magnet - it is also very slippery
  • No official ingress protection rating
  • The two speaker grills on either side of the phone are easy to cover up while holding the device horizontally
  • Having said that, OnePlus 8 offers better value as it has everything Mi 10 has at a much lower price, with an unmatched software experience, except the camera quality - and the OnePlus 8 Pro has the added benefit of the 120 Hz display and the same excellent camera quality
