2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Nice looking (plastic) build with a gradient-like glossy back finish
- Ergonomic
- The rear-mounted fingerprint sensor is snappy (the face unlocking isn't very quick though, so we'd recommend sticking to the fingerprint unlock for most users)
- Good, crisp, vivid 6.3-inch FHD+ IPS display with good color reproduction
- Motorola continues to pack simple stock Android in it's G-series, along with a bunch of useful Moto add-ons like Peek Display (always-on display), and Attentive Display (keeps the screen on while you’re looking at it), and Moto Actions (gestures like twist to open the camera, chop-chop for flashlight, lift to unlock, to name a few) - the overall software package is one of the best in the Android domain, especially if you like the simplicity of clean UIs
- Good mid-range performance backed by the Snapdragon 665 - daily use and casual games are smooth
- Nice, versatile triple camera system - Primary 48MP sensor + 16MP ultra-wide angle lens (only for videos, it's an 'action-cam' as seen on the Motorola One Action, which lets you record horizontal videos while holding the phone vertically) + 5MP depth sensor
- The primary 48MP camera captures sharp and colourful images in the daytime
- Snappy and is quick to autofocus on objects, thanks to the laser autofocus system, which is great for a phone’s camera in this price range
- If you love creating videos, the action camera on the G8 Plus will open up a different perspective that’s not usually found in this budget segment - you can record videos holding the phone in a vertical position which improves stability - what you get is GoPro-like features, without splashing out on a new camera
- Videos also have electronic stabilization in place, which is pretty good at its job of keeping footage stabilized while shooting
- The 25MP selfie camera on the front is decent and so are the portrait pictures
- Overall, the cameras on the Moto G8 Plus are fairly good for the price bracket (though not the best - that status is taken by the Xiaomi and Realme phones in this bracket)
- Excellent stereo speakers setup, for this price range - the Dolby Audio speakers make watching videos on the phone truly delightful - if you’re coming from any other phone with a single loudspeaker, you will be pleasantly surprised
- Good battery life with a large 4000mAh battery - you should get 1.5 days of use with moderate usage
- 15W fast charging support with the TurboPower adapter provided in-the-box (it's not the fastest fast charging though - the phone takes close to 150 minutes to fully charge from 0-100%)
- The Moto G8 Plus is another good all-round phone from a re-energized Motorola this year - with the versatile camera system array, stereo speakers, modern design, and a good battery life, it's an excellent option to consider if you specifically want a stock-Android-like phone - if stock Android is not a priority however, you can get a little better value for money with Xiaomi and Realme phones in this price bracket
|
- Top notch build quality and premium, elegant glass-back design - the front and back are made out of glass, whereas the frame is a "high-tech polymer that's twice as strong as polycarbonate and half the weight of aluminum" - it's technically plastic, but it has a sturdy feel to it that does make it feel like aluminum in the hand
- The back glass has a nice matte finish - it's soft to the touch and stands out a bit from traditional glass back designs
- The green colorway variant is especially attractive and stylish (the black one is more sober)
- The front is modern and sharp too - with a teardrop notch
- The power button has a built-in LED light that pulses when you receive a notification, and it's equal parts subtle and cool
- Dedicated Google Assistant button
- Very good rear fingerprint sensor
- Overall, the phone feels like it was built with love and care, with a sturdy frame, clicky buttons, and a nice bit of heft giving it the essence of a much more expensive phone
- Very good, crisp, colorful, 6.3-inch IPS display
- Nokia's HDR PureDisplay technology, in addition to supporting native HDR content, also allows the Nokia 7.2 to natively convert SDR videos into HDR ones — resulting in a picture that's brighter and more colorful - it gives everything you watch a noticeable pop, making movies, TV shows, and YouTube clips that much more enjoyable
- You can also enable the Nokia 7.2's "Dynamic Mode" to have it automatically adjust your screen's color, contrast, brightness, and white balance based on what you're doing - for example, if you're reading a book in the Kindle app, your screen will become warmer as to be easier on your eyes
- Being part of Android One series, you get clean, simple stock Android backed by guaranteed updates
- Decent performance with a solid Snapdragon 660 powering the phone - day-to-day tasks, and games are usually smooth
- Pretty decent triple camera setup for the price bracket - a 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor that's used for portrait shots
- The 48MP camera captures a lot of detail and generally showcases vibrant colors
- Portrait mode is pretty good too - the detail and color of the primary camera shine through, and Nokia allows you to change the effect and intensity after the fact
- Overall, this is a pretty decent camera phone for this price category (though it's not up to the level of the category leaders from the likes of Xiaomi, Realme)
- The single speaker gets loud enough and sounds fine
- Good battery life with a 3500 mAh battery - you will comfortably get a day of use, even with heavy usage
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- It's not the best performer in this price bracket though, and you will see the difference in high-end games like PUBG which will run in low graphics settings - if you are into gaming, you will be better off looking at Xiaomi and Realme phones in this price bracket, which tend to provide better performance bang for the buck
- Low light performance is average (though the night mode does help matters)
- You can't get ultra-wide pictures from the ultra-wide lens - it's only for videos
|
- It's significantly behind the best performers in this price bracket though, with its relatively old processor
- Images from the 48MP camera can occasionally be overly sharpened
- Low light photography is average
- The 118-degree ultra-wide camera is a lot of fun to use and opens up new possibilities with the types of photos you can take, but similar to a lot of other phones with an ultra-wide lens, there's a noticeable decrease in image quality compared to the primary camera
- No fast charging support
- Overall, while the Nokia 7.2 is a pretty decent phone on its own, it faces some pretty tough competition in its price category at the moment from Xiaomi and Realme, which it will find tough to beat, primarily on account of its average performance and cameras - if, however it's the software experience that matters most to you, it's still worth looking at
