2-minute Review [Positives] N/A
  • The Galaxy Z Flip is a stunning device - it looks iridescent and commands attention, the Mirror Purple colour will take your breath away
  • Feels solid and substantial thanks to the hinge and design changes Samsung made
  • The futuristic main screen is without any notch, there's just a single front facing camera atop the screen which is in the middle of the phone - around the whole screen, there is a raised bezel that prevents the screen from hitting itself when you fold it over, as well as preventing dust and dirt from getting beneath the screen
  • The idea behind this phone is simple, to have the full smartphone functionality when you need it, in a small form factor, that can disappear into a tight pocket or small purse when you don't - unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Flip takes a phone-first design that emulates the experience we're already used to - when open, the Galaxy Z Flip is basically a normal phone, it just happened to have a hinge in the middle which you can use to fold it
  • Flex Mode: the hinge is considerably tighter than other foldable phones which lets it rest at any angle between roughly 20 and 160 degrees which helps with a lot of tasks, like taking photos, making video calls or watching videos and it also allows hands free interactions with the phone (though, it makes opening the phone a two hand job, you can't just flick it with one hand and start using it)
  • Samsung has also added fibers inside the hinge that brush away dust beneath the screen
  • The taller 21.9:9 aspect ratio of the Galaxy Z Flip means it's also slightly narrower than a typical handset, allowing it to be more ergonomically friendly
  • The main screen is a 6.7-inch FHD+ Foldable Dynamic AMOLED display, which features all the characteristics of any Samsung screen, including vibrant colours and deep blacks - it is the best of any foldable thanks to the 'glass' layer Samsung has added which makes the screen completely flat, there's no creak, no flexing when you press on it with force
  • There's also a 1-inch "cover screen" which shows the time and date, and lets you scroll through select notifications and media playback
  • Samsung's OneUI works well, and split screen multitasking is especially pleasurable on the foldable display - Samsung's software feels like it was meant for foldables
  • Samsung has also made some key optimisations in the software to make use of the flip form factor, working closely with Google, a small handle of apps feature "Flex mode" interfaces that have been specifically optimised for the form factor, which are activated when the phone is folded at a roughly 90-degree angle
  • Very good, flagship grade performance powered by a Snapdragon 855+ - the processing package inside the Galaxy Z Flip is more than capable of handling anything you throw at it
  • Good dual camera setup at the 'rear' - a 12MP primary camera and a 12MP Ultra-wide
  • The two main cameras offer similar performance to the Galaxy S10 range of last year - in good lighting conditions, the Galaxy Z Flip takes great images full of detail and featuring a rich degree of sharpness
  • The back cameras can also double as the selfie cameras when the phone is folded and you can take "higher quality" selfies using them
  • Decent dependable battery life - will easily last a day worth of use with moderate to heavy use
  • Supports 15W Fast charging & also, wireless charging
  • Included AKG Type-C earphones
  • Unlike the Galaxy fold, which was more of a proof of concept than being a regular phone, the Galaxy Z Flip has come very close to being a daily driver that you can carry around and if you see value in the combination of the compact form factor and novelty (or wow factor) of folding the phone in half, it comes as a solid choice
2-minute Review [Negatives] N/A
  • The 1-inch "Cover Screen" at the outside is too small to be useful for anything
  • It's far from water or dust proof, and particles may easily get under the screen even after Samsung's improvement in design
  • You can still feel the crease in the middle and as the phone folds vertically, it is apparent when you scroll through anything (though, the crease is dramatically reduced and it's not as visible as it was in the Galaxy Fold)
  • It's reflective and a giant fingerprint magnet, which means you'll be constantly cleaning it
  • The Galaxy Z Flip is slippery, really slippery - put it on a flat surface, and it'll find a way to slide off
  • Finally, there are some very real fragility concerns - it is an unusual device with a lot of moving parts - this is a device you will need to be "particularly" careful using
  • While the main screen is made of 'glass' it is still covered with a plastic protective layer, the screen doesn't look quite as brilliant as it does on Samsung's usual AMOLED phones, also not as durable, it will get scratch very easily
  • The screen resolution while not bad, but for what you're paying is on the lower side compared to other phones at this price
  • Again, the Snapdragon 855+ is no slouch but at this price, it would be more future proof to add the latest Snapdragon 865
  • The Galaxy Z Flip isn't the phone you'll buy for its cameras, while they are capable of taking pictures you'll want to share on social media, at this price there are much better camera phones available, including Samsung's own S20 line up
  • Having said that, the Galaxy Z Flip has it downsides, from durability concerns to the "okay" cameras and the hardware compromises Samsung has made, doesn't make it an excellent choice as a daily driver and if a folding phone isn't your thing, it would make more sense to go with the Samsung's S20 lineup in the similar price range
