2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Top notch build quality and premium, elegant glass-back design - the front and back are made out of glass, whereas the frame is a "high-tech polymer that's twice as strong as polycarbonate and half the weight of aluminum" - it's technically plastic, but it has a sturdy feel to it that does make it feel like aluminum in the hand
- The back glass has a nice matte finish - it's soft to the touch and stands out a bit from traditional glass back designs
- The green colorway variant is especially attractive and stylish (the black one is more sober)
- The front is modern and sharp too - with a teardrop notch
- The power button has a built-in LED light that pulses when you receive a notification, and it's equal parts subtle and cool
- Dedicated Google Assistant button
- Very good rear fingerprint sensor
- Overall, the phone feels like it was built with love and care, with a sturdy frame, clicky buttons, and a nice bit of heft giving it the essence of a much more expensive phone
- Very good, crisp, colorful, 6.3-inch IPS display
- Nokia's HDR PureDisplay technology, in addition to supporting native HDR content, also allows the Nokia 7.2 to natively convert SDR videos into HDR ones — resulting in a picture that's brighter and more colorful - it gives everything you watch a noticeable pop, making movies, TV shows, and YouTube clips that much more enjoyable
- You can also enable the Nokia 7.2's "Dynamic Mode" to have it automatically adjust your screen's color, contrast, brightness, and white balance based on what you're doing - for example, if you're reading a book in the Kindle app, your screen will become warmer as to be easier on your eyes
- Being part of Android One series, you get clean, simple stock Android backed by guaranteed updates
- Decent performance for this price bracket with a solid Snapdragon 660 powering the phone - day-to-day tasks, and games are usually smooth
- Decent triple camera setup for the price bracket - a 48MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor that's used for portrait shots
- The 48MP camera captures a lot of detail and generally showcases vibrant colors
- Portrait mode is pretty good too - the detail and color of the primary camera shine through, and Nokia allows you to change the effect and intensity after the fact
- Overall, this is a decent camera phone for this price category (though it's not up to the level of the category leaders from the likes of Xiaomi, Realme)
- The single speaker gets loud enough and sounds fine
- Good battery life with a 3500 mAh battery - you will comfortably get a day of use, even with heavy usage
|
- Xiaomi has gone big on the design front this time - the Redmi K20 has a glass back with one of the most evocative gradient patterns you'll come across on any phone today - it's both premium to feel, and stunning to look at
- The gradient effect that kicks in under the right lighting condition is quite mesmerising
- The front is modern and sharp too, with a 'full screen' notch-less display (the selfie camera is a 'popup' one)
- Decent in-screen fingerprint sensor - reasonably quick and reliable
- Excellent 6.39" AMOLED display - high brightness, HDR10, and notch-free
- MIUI is one of the most refined and fluid Android UIs around
- The K20 also adds the POCO Launcher on top of MIUI - which brings the Dark Mode and App drawer to the K20
- Excellent, butter smooth performance backed by the new, powerful Snapdragon 730 (very similar in overall performance to last year's flagship Snapdragon 845, and a step above the Snapdragon 710) - everything from daily use to games is butter smooth, as expected
- Great all-round camera experience on all three rear snappers, photo and video
- Decent selfies too, from the pop-up front camera
- Overall, this is now the best camera phone in the under Rs 25k price bracket - the overall quality and versatility you get are a notch above what the competition offers
- Has a 3.5mm jack, that a lot of flagships these days tend to skimp on
- Loud (single) downward firing speaker
- Great battery life, with a 4000mAh battery and a very power efficient chip - you can get up to 2 days of use, from this beast
- Fast charging support - the supplied 18W charger fills 45% of a depleted battery in 30 mins - a full charge takes about 100 mins
- The K20 is an excellent 'close to Flagship level' device from Xiaomi that seems set to disrupt the mid-range market in India - along with the new Realme X, it offers an excellent high-end, modern experience, at a relatively low price - all ingredients of a likely blockbuster hit
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- It's not all perfect though - the Nokia 7.2 can sometimes be more sluggish than expected - navigating through the UI is sometimes met with slightly choppy animations, scrolling through social feeds/webpages doesn't always feel buttery smooth, and the camera app can sometimes take a long time to actually capture an image after pressing the shutter button
- Images from the 48MP camera can sometimes be overly sharpened
- Low light photography is average
- The 118-degree ultra-wide camera is a lot of fun to use and opens up new possibilities with the types of photos you can take, but similar to a lot of other phones with an ultra-wide lens, there's a very noticeable decrease in image quality compared to the primary camera
- No fast charging support
- Overall, while the Nokia 7.2 is a pretty decent phone on its own, it faces some pretty tough competition in its price category at the moment from Xiaomi and Realme, which it will find tough to beat, primarily on account of its average performance and cameras - if, however it's the software experience that matters most to you, it's still worth looking at
|
- Face unlock mechanism is a little clunky - you have to first wake the screen and swipe up for the camera module to engage (this might get sorted via a software update though)
- One issue with MIUI in recent times is the ads in the interface - those are still there (though a little less intrusive) - and while there are ways to disable them, it's a technical solution that a lot of prospective buyers will not even be aware of
- The pop-up selfie camera mechanism is a bit on the slow side
