2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Immaculate fit and finish, and a pleasing, premium design - very similar to the OnePlus 6T
- Pretty good ergonomics (similar to the OnePlus 6T, and better than the heavier/larger OnePlus 7 Pro)
- The in-display fingerprint reader is very good - and even a bit faster than the already good one on the OnePlus 6T
- Big, beautiful 'dewdrop' notch AMOLED display, again quite similar to the OnePlus 6T
- OnePlus’ Reading mode is still there and is as useful as ever - it turns the screen to a reading-optimized monochrome, and it can be assigned to activate when you’re in certain apps
- OxygenOS continues to be one of the most thoughtfully-designed, clean (stock-like) UIs for Android
- 2 new features that make it to the latest version of OxygenOS are screen recording, and Zen Mode (for exercising more control over your screen time)
- With the super fast flagship Snapdragon 855, some ultra fast storage speed (UFS3), the OnePlus 7 is a speed beast, and matches other top-end flagships
- Good dual rear camera setup - there a primary 48MP camera and a secondary 5MP depth sensor
- Overall image quality is good - it takes great outdoor shots, with vibrant colours and good exposure - and is a decent improvement over the OnePlus 6T (though not as good, or as versatile as the camera setup on the OnePlus 7)
- It also has the new Nightscape mode, which lets you capture reasonably bright and sharp images even in very low light situations
- Good 16MP front camera too
- Excellent stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos
- Good battery life with a 3700mAH battery - the OnePlus 7 will make it through a day of intensive use without a problem - and will give you battery life similar to the OnePlus 6T (and more than the OnePlus 7 Pro, which lasts less long because of the more battery intensive 90Hz screen)
- OnePlus's Dash Charging continues to be one of the better fast charging technologies around - it goes from 10 to 100 percent in just 1 hour and 15 minutes - though it's a step below the Warp Charge tech on the OnePlus 7 Pro
- Overall, OnePlus 7 retains the spot of the all-rounder, reliable, no-frills, budget flagship from OnePlus (while the OnePlus 7 Pro takes the more 'premium' flagship approach), giving you a high-end flagship experience for relatively less - and it makes for a decent update to the OnePlus 6T in the performance and camera departments

- Great looking, premium glass design, especially with the Luminous Black option (very similar to the Reno 2) - easily one of the best-looking phones out there, at present (along with its predecessor the Reno 10x Zoom) - it offers a masterclass in how to craft a premium smartphone at a not-so-premium price point - in fact, half of the experience of the Reno 2Z is in its looks and that's the part that satisfies you the most
- The curved Gorilla Glass rear panel is smooth and feels solid to the touch - the best thing about the back of the Reno 2Z is that it is one seamless piece of glass without any camera bump - the vertical quad camera system sits underneath the glass, offering a clean and visually attractive look
- The curved edges on the back also offer a nice grip
- Much lighter and more manageable than the original Reno 10x Zoom
- Oppo has located the selfie camera in a pop-up module which is different compared to the shark-fin module of the Reno 2 - this pop-up module is illuminated by lights on either side (similar to the Redmi K20 Pro) - and the Reno 2Z also offers the option to change the light colour, which is a neat touch
- The on-screen fingerprint sensor is extremely snappy and slightly faster than the face unlock method, but both are equally reliable
- Beautiful, bright 6.53-inch Dynamic AMOLED display - what you get is close-to-all-screen and no bezels except for a slim chin (giving you a very good 91.1% screen to body ratio)
- The display itself looks very good with vivid colours, deep blacks and excellent viewing angles - brightness levels on the Reno 2Z are good too
- The display is also great for watching videos and playing games - the edge-to-edge display offers a distraction-free experience
- ColorOS continues to get more streamlined, and lighter, but still continues to offer some neat features such as a lockscreen magazine, Night Shield, Game Space, App cloner, and smart battery saving options
- Good performance backed by a solid Helio P90 processor (similar to the Snapdragon 710) - the Reno 2Z can handle pretty much any task you throw at it, and is also a good smartphone to game on - even heavy games like PUBG run smooth
- Good thermal control - it doesn't warm up easily even with long gaming times
- Good set of quad cameras - in addition to a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor that supports EIS, the Reno 2Z also offers an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera, a 2-megapixel monochrome lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor
- The 48MP main camera can take good shots in daylight via its default 12MP pixel binning mode - Photos look sharp and colourful, and when HDR kicks in the dynamic range can get pretty wide, offering good contrast in tricky lighting conditions - AI scene detection does well too
- The Night Mode ('Ultra Dark mode') works reasonably well - this long-exposure mode requires you to keep your hands still for a few seconds, allowing you to capture brighter shots with low noise - though you shouldn't expect Pixel 3 level performance here
- The wide-angle lens also comes in handy if you want a different perspective
- Portraits taken with the Reno 2Z are very good, and have good edge detection
- The phone also holds up very well in the video department (especially in daylight) with the ultra steady mode kicking in to offer decent stabilisation
- The 16-megapixel front camera will get you some nice-looking selfies in daylight (but not the sharpest or most-detailed)
- Overall, the Reno 2Z cameras are pretty good for this price bracket
- Very good speaker - even though the Oppo Reno 2Z comes with a single bottom-firing speaker, but it can easily match a phone’s sound with stereo speakers - the speaker produces really loud sound and bass levels are pretty good
- The voice from the earpiece is also very loud for making calls, which is really nice, and something that a lot of modern smartphones do not pay enough attention to
- Good battery life with a 4000mAh battery and a 1080p screen - you can expect up to 1.5 days of use
- Also comes with some very fast VOOC 3.0 fast charging support and a 20W charging brick in the box - charge the device for an hour, and you'll be good to go for the day (you get up to 48 percent in 30 minutes and 88 percent in an hour)
- If you are not too picky about having the best raw performance for your buck, the Oppo 2Z is a very good smartphone that especially impresses with its stunning looks and good cameras - if you do care about having the best performance however, you can look at the Redmi K20 Pro at a cheaper price, or the OnePlus 7 and Asus Zenfone 6Z at a slightly higher price

2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- Still not fully waterproof (there is some water resistance but it's not IP certified)
- Like all glossy finish phones (which is an increasing majority of phones these days), the glass back of the phone is a fingerprint magnet
- It's not quite a match for the new budget-flagship camera champion, the Pixel 3a, however, which is ahead by a significant margin
- No standard headphone jack - you will need to use either USB-C or wireless headphones (none of which is included in the retail package)
- No wireless charging support
- That said though, the budget flagship segment is much more competitive now (unlike when the 6T launched), so you will have some pretty good alternatives as well, not the least of which is the Pixel 3a/XL, which while not as beautiful looking, or as fast, will provide with a much better camera experience, a more compact design, and a headphone jack
|
- The glass however, is glossy this time around rather than matt finish, so expect to see some fingerprints and smudges as you go about your day, especially on the Luminous Black option
- As expected, there is a fair amount of bloatware preinstalled on the device, including the UC Browser, NewsPoint, Dailyhunt, Helo, Paytm, Amazon, and Facebook apps - most can thankfully be uninstalled though
- Having said that, it's not the fastest phone in the price bracket though, with Snapdragon 855 phones available at even lower price brackets in the likes of Redmi K20 Pro

Oppo has been marketing the Reno series primarily on the basis of camera quality, and the Reno 2Z does offer good photo capabilities...however some competing phones (like Redmi K20 Pro, OnePlus 7) will offer significantly better performance in-depth Read Review »Full package bundled in a stylish frame...The competition is obviously tough but with its wholesome package, the Reno 2Z is not a bad choice in-depth Read Review »Visually appealing, mid-range device with high-end features and good overall performance in-depth Read Review »t has the looks, and it has power....The cameras also impress...However, recommending it is still a difficult decision as its price sees it fall in a segment that currently flushes with far more powerful devices in-depth Read Review »A complete smartphone....While it may not offer a Snapdragon 855-level performance that you would find with the Redmi K20 Pro and OnePlus 7, the Reno 2Z still manages to hold its own in-depth Read Review »At the price, it's a steal in-depth Read Review »Impressive design, cameras and display, but expensive...does not match other midrange peers like the OnePlus 7 and Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro in UX and combination of specifications and features in-depth Read Review » in-depth Read Review » hands-on Read Review »
