2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Gorgeous, premium design - the OnePlus 8 uses a glass back and an aluminium frame - the "interstellar glow" shimmers and shifts colours between gold, pink and blue depending on the lighting and is accented by a subtle gold reflective metal frame
- On the front is a beautiful edge-to-edge display and a hole-punch selfie camera
- OnePlus’s handy alert slider is still here, which enables you to quickly switch between silent, vibrate and sound-on modes
- The in-display fingerprint reader is quite accurate and works quickly
- The OnePlus 8 is easier to handle with one hand, due to its tall aspect ratio
- The OnePlus 8 feel relatively lighter and well balanced at just 180g
- A gorgeous 6.55-inch, FHD+ screen, motion is smooth, colours are vibrant, and the resolution is sufficiently high
- 90 Hz refresh rate means smooth scrolling in apps, and better graphical fluidity in games, which provides an overall premium experience
- OxygenOS continues to be one of the most thoughtfully-designed, clean (stock-like) UIs for Android with a host of additional customisation
- Blistering performance from the Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 chipset - with its 90Hz display, highly-optimised OxygenOS software, and plenty of under-the-hood tweaks, the OnePlus 8 feels crazy fast
- Good triple rear camera setup - a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro camera
- During the day, main camera captures good detail, colours are really punchy and vibrant, the dynamic range is impressive and white balance appears to be accurate
- The ultra-wide unit also performs well and adds a fun new perspective - it produces softer images compared to the main cam but it retains the excellent dynamic range
- Low-light photos are decent and the Night mode further helps in improving the image quality - it reduces the noise, brings even more detail out of the shadows and highlights - it's also probably the fastest night mode in any phone
- The portrait mode is pretty good - the faux bokeh effect seems pretty well-executed, it delivers a good amount of detail, the images look generally sharp, colours pop while retaining pretty natural and accurate skin tone
- The selfie camera is very good as well, producing sharp, colourful pictures - the selfie portrait mode looks just as good as with the main camera, the edge detection is surprisingly accurate
- Good video recording - video looks nice colour-wise, and offers wide dynamic range, good contrast and no noise - the Super Stable video mode gives you gimbal-like stabilisation
- Excellent stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, providing richer, deeper sound
- Very good battery life with the 4300 mAh battery - it will comfortably last a full day and a half on a single charge with moderate use
- Excellent fast charging - the Warp Charge 30T can fully top up the phone in just under an hour
- The OnePlus 8 sticks to the formula that has made OnePlus so successful - it gets you the latest processing package, a versatile camera, and a beautiful display, running the smooth Oxygen OS and is still a great value for money option
|
- Crushingly beautiful 'Prism' design, as soon as the light hits the back, there is a captivating blast of colours - it's a stunning view for sure!
- It is a pleasure to hold, handle, and use as a daily driver - the frame provides just enough grip to make it secure in hand, while the slim profile helps in keeping it pocket and one-hand friendly
- It manages to stay quite slim and lightweight (by today's standards) - the Galaxy A71 is just 7mm thin and weighs 179g
- Absolutely gorgeous, 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, with a tiny punch-hole camera and a near bezel-less design - you get vibrant colours and perfect inky blacks, as well as good sunlight legibility
- Video viewing and gaming experience on the giant display is an absolute delight - as far as media consumption goes, this is simply one of the best phones out there, period
- Running the Galaxy A71 is Samsung's OneUI 2 on Android 10 - which, as far as Android UIs go, is one of the most refined, well thought-out experiences
- There are many useful add-ons on board - like gesture navigation, and a great 'dark' mode
- Samsung Pay makes the cut too, making this the cheapest phone to sport the full version of the payments app, which will be especially useful if your transactions largely rely on card payments
- Good performance backed by the powerful Snapdragon 730 SoC, 8 GB of RAM, and super fast UFS storage - everything from daily use to complex games like PUBG is fairly smooth (add that to the ridiculously wide display, and all gamers are in for a treat)
- Good quad-camera setup on the back with a primary 64MP sensor, a secondary ultra-wide 12MP shooter, a 5MP Macro and a 5MP depth sensor
- The default 16MP photos from primary camera are good - detail is enough, dynamic range is very good, the colours are lively and saturated and the noise reduction works well
- The new 12MP ultra-wide camera is a notable upgrade over the old 8MP shooter in the Galaxy A70s in both resolution and picture quality - there is more detail, better sharpness, the colours are punchy, and, of course, you can fit a lot more in the frame
- The Galaxy A71 shoots good portraits, subject detection and separation are very good, and the blur looks just right
- Low light photos are decent from both primary and ultra-wide cameras and the night mode helps further in getting more light and reducing noise
- Good video recording performance with good detail levels, including some impressive slow-mo video recording with great stabilisation
- Good front camera - the 32-megapixel sensor does a good job with nice colours and wide dynamic range, the details are quite good as far as selfie cameras go
- The bundled in-ear earphones, when paired with Dolby Atmos, makes for a pretty good audio experience
- The loudspeaker is decent (though not exceptional)
- Very good battery life with a large 4500 mAh battery - it will comfortably last you a day or more, even with that large display
- There is also fast charging on-board, with the included 25W charger it takes 81 minutes for a full charge
- The Galaxy A71 is a good all-rounder and a tangible upgrade over the A70s - the large, beautiful Super AMOLED display + the big battery + Dolby Atmos support - make for an excellent media consumption device

2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The macro camera is a gimmick at best - this cheaper sensor is nowhere near the excellent macro capabilities demonstrated by the ultra-wide sensor of last year
- The lack of a telephoto camera is disappointing - the crop zoom isn't nearly as good as the proper 2x telephoto, the images lack detail, are soft, fuzzy and noisy
- Overall, while the cameras on the OnePlus 8 are pretty good, there are no major improvements compared to the cameras of last year's OnePlus 7T - instead, the camera on this phone feels like a downgrade without the telephoto lens and the 2MP macro doesn't add any real value
|
- In-display fingerprint sensor is neither the fastest nor the more accurate
- Having said that, there are certainly even better performing competitors around, like the realme X2 Pro with it's top of the line Snapdragon 855 Plus CPU
- The 5MP macro camera is average, it has fixed focus so getting the focus right is difficult and the final output isn't that great
- Overall, for the price bracket, the camera package on the Galaxy A71 is good, but not the best - you will find better camera phones in the competition
- Having said that, both realme and Xiaomi are bringing meaningful innovation to their phone, be it higher watt charging, smooth display or top of the line performance, things which are not seen in the Galaxy A71 - in their comparison, the Galaxy A71 get a little overshadowed
