2-minute Review [Positives]
  • Gorgeous, premium design - the OnePlus 8 uses a glass back and an aluminium frame - the "interstellar glow" shimmers and shifts colours between gold, pink and blue depending on the lighting and is accented by a subtle gold reflective metal frame
  • On the front is a beautiful edge-to-edge display and a hole-punch selfie camera
  • OnePlus’s handy alert slider is still here, which enables you to quickly switch between silent, vibrate and sound-on modes
  • The in-display fingerprint reader is quite accurate and works quickly
  • The OnePlus 8 is easier to handle with one hand, due to its tall aspect ratio
  • The OnePlus 8 feel relatively lighter and well balanced at just 180g
  • A gorgeous 6.55-inch, FHD+ screen, motion is smooth, colours are vibrant, and the resolution is sufficiently high
  • 90 Hz refresh rate means smooth scrolling in apps, and better graphical fluidity in games, which provides an overall premium experience
  • OxygenOS continues to be one of the most thoughtfully-designed, clean (stock-like) UIs for Android with a host of additional customisation
  • Blistering performance from the Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 chipset - with its 90Hz display, highly-optimised OxygenOS software, and plenty of under-the-hood tweaks, the OnePlus 8 feels crazy fast
  • Good triple rear camera setup - a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro camera
  • During the day, main camera captures good detail, colours are really punchy and vibrant, the dynamic range is impressive and white balance appears to be accurate
  • The ultra-wide unit also performs well and adds a fun new perspective - it produces softer images compared to the main cam but it retains the excellent dynamic range
  • Low-light photos are decent and the Night mode further helps in improving the image quality - it reduces the noise, brings even more detail out of the shadows and highlights - it's also probably the fastest night mode in any phone
  • The portrait mode is pretty good - the faux bokeh effect seems pretty well-executed, it delivers a good amount of detail, the images look generally sharp, colours pop while retaining pretty natural and accurate skin tone
  • The selfie camera is very good as well, producing sharp, colourful pictures - the selfie portrait mode looks just as good as with the main camera, the edge detection is surprisingly accurate
  • Good video recording - video looks nice colour-wise, and offers wide dynamic range, good contrast and no noise - the Super Stable video mode gives you gimbal-like stabilisation
  • Excellent stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, providing richer, deeper sound
  • Very good battery life with the 4300 mAh battery - it will comfortably last a full day and a half on a single charge with moderate use
  • Excellent fast charging - the Warp Charge 30T can fully top up the phone in just under an hour
  • The OnePlus 8 sticks to the formula that has made OnePlus so successful - it gets you the latest processing package, a versatile camera, and a beautiful display, running the smooth Oxygen OS and is still a great value for money option
  • Familiar design, similar to other premium phones - made of metal and Gorilla Glass at the front and back, with a big domino-shaped camera bump
  • The front has a beautiful flat edge-to-edge display, with a punch-hole camera on the left
  • The IR blaster sits at the top and as useful as ever
  • Power button doubles as a rapid fingerprint scanner
  • Large, 6.67-in IPS LCD display - this is arguably one of the best LCDs on the market, it impresses with high brightness, HDR10+ support, and a 144Hz refresh rate making for a solid content consumption experience
  • The 144Hz refresh rate is one of the highest on any display - Xiaomi has included AdaptiveSync technology which dynamically switches between refresh rates depending on the application that you’re running - it feels super responsive and luxuriously smooth to look at
  • The MIUI 12 on the Mi 10T is one of the more polished and refined Android skins around - you will get a plethora of customisation and features, the animations are fast and looks great with the 144 Hz display
  • Excellent performance from the top of the like Snapdragon 865 SOC - the chipset breezes through most tasks and games, the rapid UFS 3.1 storage further helps load times and generally speeds up the user experience
  • Very good triple camera setup - boasting of a 108MP primary camera, a 13MP ultra-wide, and a 5MP macro lens
  • The phone produces great daylight photos, subjects come out sharp with quite a lot of detail, even fine detail can be seen from afar, colours are natural-looking, and the dynamic range is wide - turning on the AI will boost the colours and make the images a bit more contrast-y looking
  • The ultra-wide camera with its 123-degree field of view takes dramatically wide shots and fits a lot of the scene (though, details are weaker compared to the main camera, as expected)
  • The phone uses the large sensor to crop 2x and 3x zoom shots since there's no dedicated telephoto camera - the resulting images look decent
  • Very good macro camera - the autofocus helps a lot, and in most photos, the subject comes out in focus, the amount of detail and sharpness it captures is pretty impressive for a small 5MP sensor, while colours are natural, and contrast is good
  • Good low-light photos with a fair amount of detail, sharpness is decent for the most part and contrast is good - the night mode improves the overall quality of the images quite a bit, it brings out even more detail
  • Portrait shots are decent, the edge detection does okay, the detail is good, skin tones are natural, and colours are pleasant overall
  • Selfies are excellent, sharp with plenty of detail even in challenging lighting conditions - the portrait selfie mode works well and the edge detection is excellent
  • The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro has plenty of video features - these include 8K recording, a steady video mode, a movie crop, and a dual-mode in which you can record using both the front and rear cameras
  • Overall, a very capable set of cameras for the price
  • Excellent stereo speakers - the Mi 10 sounds amazing with plenty of detail and adequate bass
  • The Mi 10T Pro's 5000 mAh battery delivers solid battery life - at 144 Hz it will easily last a whole day, which you can extend to 2 days if you lower the refresh rate
  • Rapid fast charging from the 33W fast charger in the box - it tops the device up in about 50 minutes, which is good
  • The Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is a well-balanced phone - it cuts away the extra features and delivers the basics at premium quality, from its 144Hz display to its 108MP camera, to its Snapdragon 865 processor, the device performs just as you’d expect - it’s a solid choice for the price
2-minute Review [Negatives]
  • The macro camera is a gimmick at best - this cheaper sensor is nowhere near the excellent macro capabilities demonstrated by the ultra-wide sensor of last year
  • The lack of a telephoto camera is disappointing - the crop zoom isn't nearly as good as the proper 2x telephoto, the images lack detail, are soft, fuzzy and noisy
  • Overall, while the cameras on the OnePlus 8 are pretty good, there are no major improvements compared to the cameras of last year's OnePlus 7T - instead, the camera on this phone feels like a downgrade without the telephoto lens and the 2MP macro doesn't add any real value
  • The camera module at the back is humongous, when placed flat on its back, the phone wobbles heavily
  • This is a huge phone, difficult to manage with one hand due to its sheer size, the slippery back adds more trouble
  • Fingerprints/smudges are quite visible on the shiny back
  • Though, it's an IPS LCD panel and doesn't have the inky blacks of an OLED display
  • Except the camera, the OnePlus 8T offers better value for money, has excellent display, faster charging and overall better software experience
