2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Gorgeous, premium design - the OnePlus 8 uses a glass back and an aluminium frame - the "interstellar glow" shimmers and shifts colours between gold, pink and blue depending on the lighting and is accented by a subtle gold reflective metal frame
- On the front is a beautiful edge-to-edge display and a hole-punch selfie camera
- OnePlus’s handy alert slider is still here, which enables you to quickly switch between silent, vibrate and sound-on modes
- The in-display fingerprint reader is quite accurate and works quickly
- The OnePlus 8 is easier to handle with one hand, due to its tall aspect ratio
- The OnePlus 8 feel relatively lighter and well balanced at just 180g
- A gorgeous 6.55-inch, FHD+ screen, motion is smooth, colours are vibrant, and the resolution is sufficiently high
- 90 Hz refresh rate means smooth scrolling in apps, and better graphical fluidity in games, which provides an overall premium experience
- OxygenOS continues to be one of the most thoughtfully-designed, clean (stock-like) UIs for Android with a host of additional customisation
- Blistering performance from the Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 chipset - with its 90Hz display, highly-optimised OxygenOS software, and plenty of under-the-hood tweaks, the OnePlus 8 feels crazy fast
- Good triple rear camera setup - a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro camera
- During the day, main camera captures good detail, colours are really punchy and vibrant, the dynamic range is impressive and white balance appears to be accurate
- The ultra-wide unit also performs well and adds a fun new perspective - it produces softer images compared to the main cam but it retains the excellent dynamic range
- Low-light photos are decent and the Night mode further helps in improving the image quality - it reduces the noise, brings even more detail out of the shadows and highlights - it's also probably the fastest night mode in any phone
- The portrait mode is pretty good - the faux bokeh effect seems pretty well-executed, it delivers a good amount of detail, the images look generally sharp, colours pop while retaining pretty natural and accurate skin tone
- The selfie camera is very good as well, producing sharp, colourful pictures - the selfie portrait mode looks just as good as with the main camera, the edge detection is surprisingly accurate
- Good video recording - video looks nice colour-wise, and offers wide dynamic range, good contrast and no noise - the Super Stable video mode gives you gimbal-like stabilisation
- Excellent stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, providing richer, deeper sound
- Very good battery life with the 4300 mAh battery - it will comfortably last a full day and a half on a single charge with moderate use
- Excellent fast charging - the Warp Charge 30T can fully top up the phone in just under an hour
- The OnePlus 8 sticks to the formula that has made OnePlus so successful - it gets you the latest processing package, a versatile camera, and a beautiful display, running the smooth Oxygen OS and is still a great value for money option

- IP68 dust and water resistant
- Bright, sharp, and clean looking 6.5-inch display FHD+ AMOLED display - the S20 FE’s screen looks good, with bold colours and high contrast ratios
- Sufficiently bright and usable under direct sunlight
- The display features a variable refresh rate which goes up to 120 Hz, most of the time it simply looks luscious and smooth
- Running the Galaxy Note Ultra is Samsung's OneUI 2.5 on Android 10 - which, as far as Android UIs go, is one of the most refined, well-thought-out experiences - the animations everywhere looks fluid with the high refresh rate display
- The S20 FE houses the Samsung's own Exynos 990, which is one of the best CPUs available in the market - apps open quickly, scavenging through files is swift and multi-tasking is a breeze, it is a top-tier experience
- Very good triple camera setup - a 12MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 8MP telephoto camera
- The S20 FE takes solid shots with the main camera - colours look good overall, white balance is accurate, the focus is sharp, producing clean shots with little or no noise in daylight
- The S20 FE’s ultra-wide camera squeezes in twice as much of the scene you’re shooting compared to the main snapper - it captures shots at 0.5x zoom, compared to 0.6x on most other phones, and quality is also good
- The telephoto camera facilitates 3x optical and 30x digital zoom - it is fairly good at closing the distance without losing the details
- The S20 FE inherits the Single Take mode from its more premium siblings - when engaged, Single Take records a 10-second video and snaps multiple images, giving you an entire gallery of options to choose from and share
- The low-light shots turn impressive, even in incredibly dark situations, the clarity is quite impressive, and the colours are perfect with little noise - the night mode further improves the quality with brighter and colourful images
- Live focus mode (Samsung's portrait mode) produces decent results on the S20 FE - the phone delivers good subject separation and natural-looking background blur
- Selfies from the 32MP front camera look pretty good at the default settings, focus, colour, and white balance were mostly good - with Live Focus mode for selfies you get a range of controls for background effects and edits, and accurate and appropriate background blur
- Video quality from the FE's main cam is decent, while 1080p footage is comparable to the S20s', 4K on the FE is notably inferior in terms of sharpness and detail - other than that, the videos have likeable colours and dynamic range is excellent
- Good set of stereo speaker - the earpiece double-ups as the second speaker, and it sounds clean at max volume with well-defined highs and vocals, decent lows
- Good battery life from the 4500 mAh cell - the S20 FE can last a little over a full day of rigorous use and that too with the 120Hz smooth display
- 15W wireless charging is a nice feature to have at any price point, which matches that of the wired charger
- The Galaxy S20 FE is a Samsung flagship at the core at a friendlier price, which comes with pros that include solid performance, excellent battery life, and straightforward software, cameras that are on par with the competition

2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The macro camera is a gimmick at best - this cheaper sensor is nowhere near the excellent macro capabilities demonstrated by the ultra-wide sensor of last year
- The lack of a telephoto camera is disappointing - the crop zoom isn't nearly as good as the proper 2x telephoto, the images lack detail, are soft, fuzzy and noisy
- Overall, while the cameras on the OnePlus 8 are pretty good, there are no major improvements compared to the cameras of last year's OnePlus 7T - instead, the camera on this phone feels like a downgrade without the telephoto lens and the 2MP macro doesn't add any real value
|
- Boxier in-hand feel when comparing against other S20 phones - not very comfortable
- Not-so-premium design - the S20 FE looks more like the Samsung A series phone than the S series - the ‘Glasstic’ back and thick front bezels make it look a bit cheap
- No headphone jack
- Average fast charging from the 15W adapter included in the box - the phone supports up to 25W fast charging, but for that, you'll have to buy a compatible adapter separately
- Though, if you want a more premium-looking phone with all the bells and whistles, OnePlus 8 and the Xiaomi Mi 10 are solid phones for the price
