2-minute Review [Positives] |
- Gorgeous, premium design - the OnePlus 8 uses a glass back and an aluminium frame - the "interstellar glow" shimmers and shifts colours between gold, pink and blue depending on the lighting and is accented by a subtle gold reflective metal frame
- On the front is a beautiful edge-to-edge display and a hole-punch selfie camera
- OnePlus’s handy alert slider is still here, which enables you to quickly switch between silent, vibrate and sound-on modes
- The in-display fingerprint reader is quite accurate and works quickly
- The OnePlus 8 is easier to handle with one hand, due to its tall aspect ratio
- The OnePlus 8 feel relatively lighter and well balanced at just 180g
- A gorgeous 6.55-inch, FHD+ screen, motion is smooth, colours are vibrant, and the resolution is sufficiently high
- 90 Hz refresh rate means smooth scrolling in apps, and better graphical fluidity in games, which provides an overall premium experience
- OxygenOS continues to be one of the most thoughtfully-designed, clean (stock-like) UIs for Android with a host of additional customisation
- Blistering performance from the Qualcomm's top-of-the-line Snapdragon 865 chipset - with its 90Hz display, highly-optimised OxygenOS software, and plenty of under-the-hood tweaks, the OnePlus 8 feels crazy fast
- Good triple rear camera setup - a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro camera
- During the day, main camera captures good detail, colours are really punchy and vibrant, the dynamic range is impressive and white balance appears to be accurate
- The ultra-wide unit also performs well and adds a fun new perspective - it produces softer images compared to the main cam but it retains the excellent dynamic range
- Low-light photos are decent and the Night mode further helps in improving the image quality - it reduces the noise, brings even more detail out of the shadows and highlights - it's also probably the fastest night mode in any phone
- The portrait mode is pretty good - the faux bokeh effect seems pretty well-executed, it delivers a good amount of detail, the images look generally sharp, colours pop while retaining pretty natural and accurate skin tone
- The selfie camera is very good as well, producing sharp, colourful pictures - the selfie portrait mode looks just as good as with the main camera, the edge detection is surprisingly accurate
- Good video recording - video looks nice colour-wise, and offers wide dynamic range, good contrast and no noise - the Super Stable video mode gives you gimbal-like stabilisation
- Excellent stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos, providing richer, deeper sound
- Very good battery life with the 4300 mAh battery - it will comfortably last a full day and a half on a single charge with moderate use
- Excellent fast charging - the Warp Charge 30T can fully top up the phone in just under an hour
- The OnePlus 8 sticks to the formula that has made OnePlus so successful - it gets you the latest processing package, a versatile camera, and a beautiful display, running the smooth Oxygen OS and is still a great value for money option
|
- Great-looking, well-refined and trendy "glass sandwich" design - the Twilight Grey looks vastly from metallic to blueish and even slightly green, depending on light and angle and the Coral Green looks even more visually pleasing
- The fronts houses a gorgeous, modern curved edge-to-edge display with a single cutout for the selfie camera
- The Mi 10 fits snugly and securely in hand, with the metal frame perfectly shaped to provide a little bit of extra grip
- The useful IR blaster is on the top
- The in-display fingerprint reader and face unlock work great, both snappy and reliable
- A stunning, punchy 6.67-inch, Super AMOLED display, which can stand its own in terms of quality compared to the competition
- The 90 Hz refresh rate makes the visuals and animations, incredibly polished and smooth (though, more flagships are switching to 120 Hz panels)
- The display is sufficiently bright for use in direct sunlight
- Mi 10 is certified for HDR10+ and covers Widevine L1 DRM, meaning, you can enjoy all the HDR content, at maximum resolution from any streaming service you want and have a great experience while doing so
- The MIUI 11 on the Mi 10 is one of the more polished and refined Android skins around - you will get a plethora of customisation and features, the animations are fast and looks great with the 90 Hz display
- Powered by the king of the hill in the Android world, the Snapdragon 865, this is about as fast as things currently get in the Android realm
- A very good quad-camera setup - consisting of a 108MP primary lens, a 13MP ultra-wide, a 2MP macro and a 2MP depth sensor
- In daylight, the Mi 10 makes great use of its potent main camera, shots come out with abundant detail, excellent dynamic range, and very mature colour science - the Ai mode can automatically pick-up and apply little tweaks for the detected scene, and works well
- On a good sunny day, the ultra-wide camera does its main task of capturing more of the scene pretty well (though, quality isn't as good as the main camera)
- The macro camera works well and the shots are perfectly usable, especially for social media, where they are likely to end up anyway
- Portraits are great, even without the portrait mode, the primary camera is capable of producing very natural looking bokeh - portrait mode takes things to the next level, subject separation is on point and Xiaomi has packed the Studio lighting section full of interesting lighting effects
- In lowlight, shots have plenty of detail, contrast, and nice colours - definitely a flagship-worthy performance
- There's no telephoto camera, but the Mi 10 is still quite capable at capturing 2X zoom photos, thanks to the large 108MP sensor - images come out excellent in both daylight and low-light
- The selfie camera is decent, it producing perfectly usable Instagram worthy selfies
- Video recording is very good too, it is capable of capturing 8K video - you get video image stabilisation pretty-much all around, except at 8K resolution
- Excellent stereo speakers - the Mi 10 sounds amazing
- Excellent battery with the 4780 mAh battery inside - it can last up to 2 days of moderate use
- The 30W fast charging is plenty fast - a full charge will take around 72 minutes
- The Mi 10 is a well-rounded flagship device and sits right between the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro and comes out as an excellent option if you're looking for some great cameras, excellent battery life and a stunning display
|
2-minute Review [Negatives] |
- The macro camera is a gimmick at best - this cheaper sensor is nowhere near the excellent macro capabilities demonstrated by the ultra-wide sensor of last year
- The lack of a telephoto camera is disappointing - the crop zoom isn't nearly as good as the proper 2x telephoto, the images lack detail, are soft, fuzzy and noisy
- Overall, while the cameras on the OnePlus 8 are pretty good, there are no major improvements compared to the cameras of last year's OnePlus 7T - instead, the camera on this phone feels like a downgrade without the telephoto lens and the 2MP macro doesn't add any real value
|
- The matte finish on the back of the Mi 10 is a real grease magnet - it is also very slippery
- No official ingress protection rating
- The two speaker grills on either side of the phone are easy to cover up while holding the device horizontally
- Having said that, OnePlus 8 offers better value as it has everything Mi 10 has at a much lower price, with an unmatched software experience, except the camera quality - and the OnePlus 8 Pro has the added benefit of the 120 Hz display and the same excellent camera quality
